Latest Waze Update Includes Additional Support For Voice Commands

Using your phone while driving is clearly not a good idea, and companies like Waze have built in features to prevent users from using the app while driving. However what if you wanted to find a new route? What if you decided that you wanted to go somewhere else, or find an alternative route to your destination, what then?

The good news is that in an announcement by Waze, the company has revealed several changes that they’re making to the app, one of which includes support for voice commands. Dubbed “Talk to Waze”, it allows users to command the app by saying, “OK Waze,” which expands on the voice commands already available in the app.

According to Waze, “An evolution of our existing Waze Voice Commands, you can now initiate your drive, get a preview of the route ahead, send reports, and add a pit stop—all without lifting a finger from the wheel. Not only is it convenient, it’s safer, allowing you to stay focused on the road ahead.”

In addition to the voice command support, there is also support for finding HOV lanes, and also a new “motorcycle mode”. This helps motorcyclists find routes and navigational directions that are optimized for them based on the experience of actual motorcyclists. The update should already be live, but note that not all of the features will be available globally and will be limited to certain markets.

Facebook Testing ‘Breaking’ Label For New Stories

When you scroll through social media, sometimes you might find certain news outlets you follow caption their posts with “BREAKING”. This is to indicate that a big piece of news just broke, which might be of interest to those who want to find out the latest news and follow it as the story develops.

Facebook knows this and wants to make it easier for publications to highlight breaking stories. According to a report from Recode, Facebook is testing out a new “breaking” label that publications can use when they post on Facebook, as you can see in the screenshot to the right. The idea is that this will make it clearer as to what stories are “breaking” right now, as well as show how long ago it was posted.

As it stands, the feature will allow publishers to choose to leave the label on for as little as 15 minutes, or up to 6 hours, and that they can only use it once every 24 hours. However it seems that for now, breaking stories won’t necessarily rank at the top of your News Feed. A Facebook spokesperson told Recode, “As part of this test, we’ll be evaluating if breaking news stories should be incorporated into ranking.”

It is an interesting idea and whether or not it’ll actually be released as an actual feature for publishers to use remains to be seen.

iPhone X Is The Most Activated Smartphone Over Thanksgiving Weekend

We know that some of Apple’s critics out there are skeptical about the iPhone X’s success. After all with it priced so high, well and above most of the competition, wouldn’t it just deter customers who might choose a different brand instead? Turns out maybe not, because according to the latest statistics from Localytics, the iPhone X is doing just fine.

According to their numbers, it appears that the iPhone X is the most activated device over the Thanksgiving weekend. As you can see in the graph above, the iPhone X accounted for 47% of mobile device activations over Thanksgiving, with the Google Pixel 2 coming in close at 45%, following by the Galaxy Note 8 at 44%.

Interestingly enough Apple’s iPhone 8 and 8 Plus did not fare quite as well, accounting for 21% and 16% respectively, which when combined isn’t even close to the iPhone X’s activations. This seems to be in line with an earlier analyst report which said that Apple could have sold as many as 6 million iPhone X handsets during Black Friday.

In fact it seems that this could only just be the beginning, as KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that demand for the iPhone X hasn’t even peaked yet.

Nintendo’s Next Amiibo Is A Kellogg’s Cereal Box

Nintendo’s Amiibos have typically come in the form of toys, such as small figurines, but it seems that Nintendo is expanding that notion. In fact according to a report from Cerealously, Nintendo’s next Amiibo comes in the form of a Kellogg’s cereal box, that you can see in the image to the right.

It is pretty obvious that based on this image that this cereal box was launched in conjunction with Super Mario Odyssey. Now we know that this might seem like a joke or a hoax, but it seems that it is indeed very real. The cereal has been found listed on several websites of retailers, and a tweet by the Kellogg’s UK and Ireland account has confirmed that it is real, but unfortunately it will be exclusive to the US market for now.

Kellogg’s US has also reached out to a reader of Cerealously and confirmed it, saying, “This star-shaped cereal features Super Mario-inspired marshmallows, and a limited number of packages will have an Amiibo powerup sticker that can be used on the Super Mario Odyssey game with the Nintendo Switch gaming console.”

Like we said, it appears that Nintendo is indeed expanding on its Amiibo and we wouldn’t be surprised if we were to see more similar collaborations in the future.
