iHome Launches HomeKit-Compatible Outdoor Smart Plug

While there is an increasing number of smart home appliances that are finding their way onto the market, the number of “dumb” home appliances still outnumbers them. However we’ve seen how some companies have found ways around that, such as by creating smart plugs that turn regular appliances into smart ones.

Now iHome is no stranger to such devices, but in case you wanted something for the outdoors, the company has you covered. iHome has recently announced the iSP100 Outdoor SmartPlug. As its name suggests, this is a set of plugs designed for the outdoors which when connected, will allow users to control them using their smartphones. They are also HomeKit compatible which means that you can use it with the iOS Home app in addition to other digital assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant.

With the iSP100 giving regular devices “smarts”, it will allow users to easily control them, such as setting a schedule or even controlling it remotely. This means that you could rig an outdoor spotlight to turn on at night, or you can remotely turn it on when you are on the way home, and so on. It is priced at $40 and available via the company’s website. iHome also has some smart indoor plugs ranging from $30 to $50.

Skyrim Graphics For The Nintendo Switch VS The PS4

Based on what we know so far, it will probably be a while before we see The Elder Scrolls VI from Bethesda, which means that until then, players will have to make do with The Elder Scrolls Online, as well as the reimagining of Skyrim which is not only available in VR, but will also be launched on the Nintendo Switch.

We’ve seen how Bethesda has created a “Special Edition” of Skyrim which is basically the game with enhanced graphics, so the question is with the difference in hardware on consoles, how does the Switch version of Skyrim fare? That’s what the folks over at Digital Foundry have decided to find out in their analysis in the video above that compares the Switch to that of the PS4.

Unlike comparisons between the PS4 and Xbox One, the differences between the Switch and PS4 are considerably more pronounced. The colors of the Switch appear to be slightly more saturated, and the details aren’t quite as fine as the PS4. However impressively enough Digital Foundry found that when docked, the Switch manages to run Skyrim at 1600×900, although under a heavy load it will see it drop to 896×720, which is more or less what it looked like when it was demoed at Gamescom.

They also note that the Switch version will run the game at 30fps, which is very playable although perhaps not as buttery smooth as one would like. However it is still an impressive achievement all the same, so if you don’t think you can tell the difference, or if the differences don’t bother you so much, then maybe the Skyrim for the Switch could be worth checking out.

Spire Health Tag Is A Health Tracker That Doesn’t Need Charging

If there is one problem with fitness trackers and smartwatches is that for the most part they are powered by batteries, and this means that after a while they run out and require charging, which sometimes isn’t exactly the most convenient. However a company by Spire might have solved that with the launch of the Health Tag.

This is a health tracker that can stick to your clothes. This means that if you already wear a watch or don’t like to wear a watch, not to worry as this will adhere to your clothing instead. It is also waterproof which means that if you wear it to the gym, sweating is not going to be an issue, and apparently putting it through the laundry is not a problem either.

It has a battery that is good for 1.5 years, so stick it on your gym clothes or favorite clothes and you won’t have to worry about it. We’re not sure how long the adhesive will last, especially if it gets wet, but we have to admit that we are concerned about it potentially falling off while you’re out and about.

As for the tracking features, it will feature pretty standard tracking of your metrics, and will also be able to offer personalized guidance for sleep and daily activity. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, Spire is selling the Health Tag individually at $49 each, or alternatively you could purchase a pack of 8 for $200 or 15 for $300.

Teenage Engineering’s ‘H’ & ‘R’ Smart Speakers Are Unlike Anything You’ve Ever Seen

When it comes to speaker design, it’s safe to say that for the most part many of them tend to be pretty boring in terms of their shape and color (although at least one has made its way into the Museum of Modern Art). However the folks at Teenage Engineering are trying to change that perception with the unveiling of the “H” and “R” smart speakers.

These are speakers that the company has collaborated with China’s Baidu and Raven Tech, and as you can see in the photo above, these are definitely not your run-of-the-mill smart speaker. Starting with the “H”, they look like a stack of coasters or maybe even LEGO bricks. However the top is removable and has touch-sensitive LEDs with built-in microphones, and when removed it can act as a remote control for the speaker unit below it.

As for the “R”, this is the more ambitious design of the two. Its top is reminiscent of the “H”, but instead of a stack of these, there is only one and it is mounted onto a robotic arm that when you speak to it, it will actually be able to swivel and “look” at you, and will also move along to the beat of the music, thanks to its speakers which are housed in the base of the device. Both speakers will also be powered by Baidu’s DuerOS.

As for availability, the “H” is expected to go on sale in China next month where it will be priced at CNY1,699. As for the “R”, it is still in development and we’re not sure when it will be released or how much it will cost.

Apple Reportedly Pushing macOS High Sierra Onto Users

As much as companies would love to have customers use their latest product, sometimes due to the changes introduced in new products, some customers would rather not upgrade. However it seems that Apple isn’t taking into consideration a user’s preference because according to a report from Adam Engst at TidBITS, Apple is apparently pushing macOS High Sierra onto unsuspecting Mac users.

macOS 10.3 High Sierra is the latest version of Apple’s computer operating system, and while it does bring new features to the table, we understand if there are some users who are hesitant on upgrading. However Engst writes that he discovered that Apple might be pushing the update onto users by downloading it in the background, and then presenting users with the option to either click “Install” or “Details”, the latter which doesn’t really do anything save for launching the App Store.

Engst points out that clicking “Details” is the only way to decline the installation, but for those who might be less tech savvy might feel that they have no choice but to install it. It should be noted that this can be disabled by turning off the feature that automatically checks for updates. This can be found in System Preferences -> App Store, and then deselect the checkbox.

Apple isn’t alone in trying to push the latest updates onto its users. When Windows 10 first came out, Microsoft was accused of being aggressive in trying to get users to upgrade.
