Emirates In-Flight Wi-Fi Speeds To Reach 50Mbps

Emirates, one of the most popular airlines in the world, is revamping its in-flight Wi-Fi product. It has teamed up with Inmarsat and Thales for this purpose. The revamp will see Emirates in-flight Wi-Fi speeds reach up to 50Mbps, which is certainly not going to be too shabby for when you’re 40,000 feet up in the air.

Emirates has inked a deal with Inmarsat and Thales to provide its new Boeing 777X airplanes with onboard satellite technology which will enable the airline to offer customers with in-flight Wi-Fi speeds of up to 50Mbps.

This agreement will see Emirates’ Boeing 777X fleet equipped with the Inmarsat Global Express Aviation satellite from 2020.

There’s going to be a lot of these planes flying with 50Mbps in-flight Wi-Fi. Emirates has 150 Boeing 777X on order. That’s over and above the 165 Boeing 777 aircraft that it already owns.

Each aircraft will have a satellite antenna mounted on the top with several wireless access points. This will ensure similar signal strength for passengers regardless of where they’re seated in the plane.

The airline says that it has spent over $200 million to provide Wi-Fi connectivity across its aircraft over the past few years. More than 800,000 passengers utilize the onboard Wi-Fi service every single month.

It currently offers complimentary Wi-Fi to all First Class and Business Class passengers while economy passengers get 20MB free. They’re free to purchase more if they want.

WhatsApp May Let You Send Voice Notes Without Holding The Button

WhatsApp enabled users to send voice notes back in 2013. The company hasn’t done much to improve this feature even after it was acquired by Facebook. WhatsApp might finally be making a much-needed improvement to the feature. You know how you’re required to keep pressing down on the button to record the voice note? WhatsApp might soon let you record the voice note without having to hold down the button.

WhatsApp is now testing a different way to record voice notes, one that doesn’t involve having to hold the button down.

Once users start recording a voice note, the app will show a new sliding interface for the microphone button. They’ll see an option to swipe up to lock it in recording mode after about half a second of them pressing the button. This enables them to record the voice note freely without having to keep their finger on the button.

This is going to make it easier to go back in the conversation while recording a voice note, enabling users to find old messages if they need to reference or check something. Above all, it’s just easier for the user.

However, users will not be able to type text messages when the microphone button is in lock mode and they will also not be able to view images or videos. They can’t even leave the chat because if they do, the voice note gets deleted automatically.

WhatsApp is testing this feature currently and it’s unclear when it plans on releasing it to all users.

China Thinking About Building A Nuclear-Powered Space Shuttle

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, which is the main contractor for the country’s space program, has hinted at an ambitious plan that involves developing a nuclear-powered space shuttle. This was mentioned in a roadmap for China’s future space endeavors that highlights want the country wants to achieve in the final frontier by 2040 and beyond.

The future plans include an expansion of the Long March rocket family that China has been using since the 1970s. China is aiming to complete the Long March 8 low-cost rocket in a couple of years. This will allow the CASC to compete more effectively in the space sector by selling launch services to other countries.

CASC’s plans also include building a reusable space plane by 2025 which will be used for the purpose of space tourism. Some private companies are already working to enable people to take trips to space as well.

The country is aiming to make all of the rocket in its Long March family reusable in less than 20 years. It also wants to create all-new launch vehicles by 2040. The launch vehicles will be used for multiple interstellar round-trips, using asteroid mining to exploit space resources, and constructing megaprojects such as a space-based solar power station.

CASC mentions a nuclear-powered space shuttle as one of the goals that it aims to achieve by 2040 but it hasn’t provided many details about that as yet. It’s clear that the country is seriously considering this so this is certainly going to be something to keep an eye out for.

OnePlus 5T Specs, Price, And Release Date Officially Announced

After months of rumors, OnePlus today announced its new flagship smartphone officially. It has confirmed the OnePlus 5T specs, price, and release date today. The news doesn’t come as a surprise, though, given that almost everything about the OnePlus 5T had already leaked online before the official announcement.

OnePlus has jumped on the bezel-less bandwagon with this device. The OnePlus 5T has a 6 inch OLED 1080 x 2160 pixel resolution display with 18:9 aspect ratio and slim bezels. The physical home button has subsequently been removed as well and the fingerprint sensor can now be found at the back.

The internals are more or less the same as the OnePlus 5. The new flagship is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB storage. It comes with a 3,300mAh battery.

After the display, only the changes made to the camera system are really significant. Instead of the wide and telephoto lens dual camera of the OnePlus 5, the OnePlus 5T has a second “low-light camera.”

It’s still a combination of a 16 megapixel primary camera with a 20 megapixel secondary camera but the latter sensor has a new f/1.7 aperture to match the primary sensor. This should, at least in theory, enable the camera to perform better in low-light conditions.

The front facing 16 megapixel camera has been retained but it has picked up some new tricks. The OnePlus 5T has a face unlock feature which works using the front camera.

Other than these changes, it’s essentially the same phone as the OnePlus 5. The company has confirmed that the OnePlus 5T is going to be available in the United States starting November 21st for $499 and $559 for the 64GB and 128GB models respectively.
