Nexus Player Gets Google Assistant
Posted in: Today's Chili
Google has decided to roll out its artificial intelligence-powered Assistant to the Nexus Player. The company’s first proper digital media player has now received support for the Google Assistant. Yes, there was the Nexus Q, but we all know how that turned out. The Nexus Player has received support for Google Assistant with the November security update for the device.
Google launched the Nexus Player back in 2014. It launched with Android 5.0 and was the first Android TV device at the time. The company has since been rolling out platform updates for this device and even revamped the interface in September with the launch of Android 8.0 Oreo.
It might be the end of the road for the Nexus Player as far as platform updates are concerned, given that Google has excluded it from the Android 8.1 Developer Preview.
The company has gradually been rolling out Assistant to its Android TV-powered devices. We’ve previously seen the Assistant land on devices like the NVIDIA Shield and some Sony TVs.
Once Nexus Player owners install the latest update for their device, they will be informed at first boot that Assistant is now available for the Nexus Player.
It’s not entirely clear how Google has rolled out Assistant for this device. It could have either been through the recent firmware update or via an update to the Google app

Some OnePlus users found a glaring security flaw in the company’s devices that enable easy root access. That’s not the kind of vulnerability that you want to have in your smartphone. OnePlus took its time to respond but the company has now come forward and said that it’s going to issue a fix for this. The vulnerability was discovered in several OnePlus models, including the OnePlus 5, which was released not too long ago.
It seems that this was on oversight on the company’s part. The models found to be affected have a Qualcomm testing app called EngineerMode. The app will provide root-level access to the phone without requiring a bootloader unlock.
What that means is that anyone with physical access to the device can use the EngineerMode app to install malware or trackers on the phone.
A OnePlus staff member has explained that the EngineerMode app is a diagnostic tool that’s used for functionality testing and for IT support. The member also said that third-party apps can’t get full root privileges from the EngineerMode app.
USB debugging needs to be turned on for it to work and since it’s disabled by default, that’s another line of defense against the misuse of this app.
OnePlus doesn’t see this is a “major security issue,” but agrees that users may still have concerns so the root function will be removed in the next update.

Not only can you use Google’s search engine to find restaurants and places to visit, you can also use it to find jobs. Google launched its built-in jobs search engine earlier this year and the company has now announced that it’s making the feature even better by rolling out some new improvements. These are the basic improvements that users felt the need for after the initial launch of this feature.
Google says that since this feature was launched, it has seen more than 60 percent of employers showing jobs in Search and has connected tens of millions of people to new job opportunities.
Based on the feedback from job seekers, it has made some improvements to the feature. Users will now see salary information for job postings. It will display estimated salary ranges alongside many jobs based on title, location, and employer. The estimates are drawn from sources like PayScale, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn.
Many users want to have control over the location that Google uses to match them to jobs. The company has added an easy way for users to tell Google what search area to use when searching for jobs that match their query.
In a couple of weeks, it’s also going to add the ability to save jobs inside Google Search. Each posting will be accompanied by a bookmark button so saving jobs will be as easy as a single tap.

Major financial news outlet Bloomberg is reportedly developing a “24-hour social news network on Twitter” that’s reportedly going to be launched on the microblogging service next month. According to the reports, Bloomberg’s founding partners for this initiative include Goldman Sachs, TD Ameritrade, Infiniti, CA Technologies, AT&T, and CME Group. More partners are also said to be lined up.
The average partnership price point is said to be in the range of $1.5 million to $3 million. This will enable Bloomberg to secure eight figures in revenue in the social news network’s first year alone.
It’s going to hire around 50 people to work on this project. It will initially exist as the first 24 hour social news network on Twitter.
“In this age of the Google/Facebook duopoly, a relentless focus on invention and innovation is the only way to succeed,” Bloomberg Media CEO Justin Smith told Axios, adding that “The fruits of disruption don’t and shouldn’t only belong to the dominant tech (aka “Media”) platforms.”
Just how well Bloomberg is able to implement its vision of a 24 hour social news network on Twitter remains to be seen. No further details about it have been revealed at this point in time.
According to the report, the news network is going to be launched on Twitter come December 18th, 2017.

Microsoft has decided to rebrand the payments framework that’s built into Windows 10. You might have heard of a little something called Microsoft Wallet. The framework was also known on the Windows Phone as Microsoft Wallet initially. It’s no longer going to be called that, though, because the company has decided to brand it to Microsoft Pay in Windows 10.
An update to the Microsoft Store has been rolled out today which implements this name change. The Wallet user interface has been updated with this release to rebrand it to Microsoft Pay.
It’s a minor change but it’s definitely worth it. Microsoft Pay certainly sounds cleaner than Microsoft Wallet. Moreover, it’s in line with other services like Apple Pay and Android Pay, even though there isn’t a mobile ecosystem that Microsoft has to enable its users to make payments on the go with this service.
Perhaps Microsoft is thinking about revamping its payments service and the rebrand is its first step in that direction. The digital payments space is heating up and it wouldn’t be surprising if Microsoft fancies itself a piece of the pie.
Microsoft hasn’t dropped any hints about that so far, though, so it’s unclear if its intentions for this payments framework expand beyond a mere rebranding. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
