We’ve already heard the news about HTC’s Vive Focus, so it was only natural to get my hands dirty with this standalone 6DoF (six-degree-of-freedom) VR headset. As it turned out, HTC delivered pre-production units to several developers two weeks ago,…
Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.
While we prepare for The Engadget Experience today in Los Angeles, you can take a look back Monday’s biggest stories, including yet another terrifying robot from the good folks at Boston Dynamics.
Games about war, though insanely popular, do little to illustrate the hardships faced by soldiers and civilians. With its stark design and focus on survival, This War of Mine (TWOM) set out to change that. The indie game from the devs behind the Anom…
Samsung’s “Active” series of phones have typically been an exclusive to AT&T, at least until this year when the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active made its way onto other carriers as well. In fact if you’re thinking about getting the phone, you might be interested to learn that the Galaxy S8 Active will be available from Sprint November 17.
The carrier has recently announced that the Galaxy S8 Active will be available on their network where for a limited time, customers who purchase the handset on the Sprint Flex plan will get a 50% discount on their monthly installments where it will cost $17.71 per month. For those unfamiliar with the Galaxy S8 Active, this is more or less the Samsung Galaxy S8 except that it has been designed to be a rugged device.
The phone has a MIL-STD-810 + IP68 rating, meaning that it is protected from the elements such as water and dust, and it will also be able to withstand drops and shocks from certain heights. It won’t be completely indestructible, but it should be able to withstand a beating or two. If you’re someone who works in a harsh environment, then this phone should be able to withstand the daily rigors of your job.
As for the rest of the specs, we’re looking at a 5.8-inch 2960×1440 Super AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 12MP rear-facing camera, an 8MP front-facing camera, and a 4,000mAh battery.

While DC has been trying their best with their superhero movies, it’s safe to say that they haven’t really been living up to expectations despite the fact that some of these movies feature some of the biggest names in superhero comics of all time. However that changed with Woman Woman which is probably DC’s most successful superhero flick to date.
With the success of the first movie, we’re sure many are hankering for more Wonder Woman and the good news is that Warner Bros. has recently confirmed that Wonder Woman 2 is set for a 1st of November, 2019 release. Prior to this, Warner had stated that Wonder Woman 2 would be released on the 13th of December, 2019, but for whatever reason the movie will now be released about a month earlier, which we guess is good news for fans.
It has been speculated that the move up in release date is so that Wonder Woman won’t have to compete with Star Wars Episode IX, which is currently set for the 20th of December, 2019, which given that it is the last in the current trilogy will probably be something that everyone will want to watch.
We should point out that there have been some rumors about Gal Gadot threatening to pull out of Wonder Woman 2 should Brett Ratner’s company Ratpac-Dune Entertainment is involved. However Deadline claims that these rumors are false, and that Ratner’s company’s involvement with Warner Bros. ended earlier this April with Rampage, meaning that there were no plans for his company to finance Wonder Woman 2 in the first place.

There are a few places that one can get the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, but if for whatever reason you prefer shopping at Microsoft’s online store, you will be interested to learn that Microsoft has started to sell the Galaxy S8 and S8+ online. Prior to this, both handsets were available in Microsoft’s brick and mortar stores, but now they’re available online as well.
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be available unlocked at $724.99 for the Galaxy S8 and $824.99 for the Galaxy S8+. Alternatively Microsoft’s online store will also allow customers to purchase either the AT&T or Verizon mode of the phone, where interestingly enough Verizon’s model will cost you slightly more.
It should be noted that if you were to purchase the unlocked models, you will be eligible for a $150 discount as part of Microsoft’s Black Friday promotion, so that’s something to consider, plus there’s also the fact that you will be free from any obligations to carriers and be free to pick any carrier of your liking.
However the Black Friday promotion only kicks off on the 23rd of November, so you’ll probably want to wait until then to take full advantage of it.

One of the problems with some of today’s virtual reality (VR) headsets is that they are required to be tethered to either a computer or a console, like the PlayStation 4. This does limit mobility in terms of actually moving around the room, and also taking the headset with you on the go, which is why it was exciting to hear that HTC might have a standalone headset in the works.
It was then suggested that the headset could be announced on the 14th of November, and sure enough it looks like the reports were true as HTC has officially announced their latest standalone VR headset – the HTC Vive Focus. According to HTC, “Vive Focus offers enhanced comfort for extended use, easy on-off capabilities, and is the first commercial standalone device to deliver inside-out 6-degree-of-freedom tracking (6DoF) which Vive calls “world-scale”.”
The headset will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and will utilize HTC’s Vive Wave VR open platform, which is a new VR platform announced by HTC and will see twelve hardware partners in China take advantage of it by integrating it into future products. Unfortunately it seems that for now, the HTC Vive Focus will be focused (pun unintended) on the Chinese market.
There is no word on whether HTC will bring the Vive Focus to other markets, and if you remember HTC initially had plans for a Daydream version of the HTC Vive Focus intended for Western markets, but HTC has since confirmed that those plans have been scrapped.

Wireless charging was a feature that was missing from Apple’s iPhone lineup, but that changed with the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. While wireless charging might be seen as more convenient due to the fact that you don’t need to keep plugging devices in and out, there is a drawback and just like WiFi compared to a cable connection, wireless charging can be slower than conventional methods.
However the good news for iPhone owners is that iOS 11.2 will change that. As it stands the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X will charge at 5 watts using a Qi-based wireless charger, but Apple had previously promised faster charging would be arriving for their new iPhones, and that’s where iOS 11.2 comes in. With the update, these iPhones will be able to charge at a faster rate of 7.5 watts.
This is according to a report from MacRumors who were tipped off by this change by accessory maker RAVpower. They then tested it out for themselves and found that it was true. That being said, iOS 11.2 is currently in beta and there is no word on when it will be released. However beta 3 has recently been seeded to developers and beta testers, so it looks like development is quite far along and hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer for its official release.
