Amazon Releases Silk Browser For Fire TV

Amazon has released its Silk web browser for its Fire TV devices. Using a web browser on a TV isn’t really that intuitive or fun but if you’ve always wanted the ability to browse the web on your Amazon Fire TV set-top boxes, sticks, and Fire TV Edition smart TVs, now you can. Amazon’s Silk web browser is rolling out for the aforementioned devices starting today.

Amazon’s Silk web browser is already available on its Fire tablets so if you’ve ever used it before on an Amazon tablet, you should have a good idea of its user interface and features. No major changes have been made to the Fire TV version.

The browser can now be downloaded from the Amazon app store on the supported hardware. That includes the first and second generation Fire TV set-top boxes and the second generation Amazon Fire TV stick. The Westinghouse/Element 4K TV that’s powered by Amazon’s Fire TV OS is supported as well.

Interestingly, the browser doesn’t support Amazon’s latest Fire TV model just yet. That’s possibly because it’s the first one to run on Amazon’s new Fire OS 6 operating system and the app doesn’t support that right now. The first generation Fire TV stick is not compatible as well.

Bitcoin Smashes Through $10,000 Barrier

Bitcoin has been on a wild ride this year. Many had predicted that it would break the $10,000 ceiling by the end of this year. Bitcoin has done that in spectacular fashion and with little over a month to go before the year ends. It’s through the $10,000 barrier and is inches away from touching $11,000.

To say that Bitcoin has been on a wild ride is not untrue. The virtual currency has gained almost $9,000 since the start of this year. It has surged over $2,000 since the Thanksgiving holiday last week.

Many Wall Street giants have thrown their weight behind the virtual currency. Others still see it as a bubble. One of the best economists in the world, Robert Shiller, also referred to Bitcoin recently as “the best example of a bubble.”

It remains to be seen just how sharply the virtual currency is going to pull back from its all-time high of almost $11,000. That is if it pulls back at all. Some bullish predictions suggest that it’s going to surge even higher from here.

There are also indications that major financial firms will move into the Bitcoin market next year and start dominating it. The Bitcoin market has largely been dominated by smaller firms and individual traders looking to make a quick buck.

Windows 10 Now Powers 600 Million Devices

Microsoft set an ambitious goal to have Windows 10 up and running on more than one billion devices by the end of 2018. The company decided to give up on that goal and acknowledged that it will take Windows 10 longer to reach that magic number. It’s getting there, albeit slowly. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has revealed that Windows 10 is now running on 600 million devices across the globe.

The 600 million figure includes tablets, PCs, Xbox One consoles, Surface Hub devices, phones, and HoloLens headsets. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed this figure during the company’s annual shareholders meeting earlier today.

The company is still 400 million shy of reaching its goal and the growth has stagnated ever since Microsoft discontinued the free Windows 10 upgrade offer. Moreover, since Microsoft is no longer interested in making Windows-powered smartphones, those devices won’t contribute to the numbers as well.

It’s difficult to say when Windows 10 will reach that one billion devices milestone. The last official figures that Microsoft revealed were back in May this year and that’s when it had hit 500 million devices. It has taken almost six months after that to add an additional 100 million devices.

At this rate, it may take a couple of years before Microsoft can proudly say that Windows 10 powers more than one billion devices across the globe.

Facebook Might Ask You For Selfies If Suspicious Activity Is Detected

Facebook has reportedly built a new captcha tool which will ask users to “upload a photo of yourself that clearly shows your face.” This will help the world’s largest social network determine whether or not the user is actually human or just a bot. It’s testing this new captcha to improve its user verification features. The test does mention that Facebook will permanently delete the selfie from its servers once it has been checked.

Facebook confirmed to Wired that the intention behind this test is to “help us catch suspicious activity at various points of interaction on the site, including creating an account, sending Friend requests, setting up ads payments, and creating or editing ads.”

The entire process is automated, that includes the identification of accounts where suspicious activity has been detected and the checking of the selfie. Facebook will look at whether or not the photo is unlike to determine the user’s identity.

Facebook hasn’t said more details about it because the company says that it doesn’t want the system to be manipulated.

It may lock out users out of accounts that have been flagged. They’ll see a message which says “You’ll now be logged out of Facebook as a security precaution,” and that “We’ll get in touch with you after we’ve reviewed your photo.”

Facebook hasn’t said when it started running this test and it’s yet to confirm if and when it will be rolled out widely.

VW Will Launch ‘Affordable’ Electric Crossover In 2020

Gone are the days when all-electric cars used to be expensive. You can buy a new one from companies like GM and Tesla for under $40,000 and that’s before any state or federal tax incentives. It goes without saying that electric cars will only get more affordable down the road and you can count on German auto giant VW to offer you one as well. VW has said that it’s going to launch an “affordable” electric crossover in the United States come 2020.

Volkswagen’s I.D. Crozz EV has only been shown off by the company as a concept at auto shows across the globe. It has now confirmed that the car will be released in the United States by 2020.

The I.D. Crozz is going to be powered by two electric motors that will put out 302 horsepower combined. The car will also have an 83-kWh battery which will support rapid charging so it will be able to reach 80 percent charge in just half an hour. The I.D. Crozz is said to offer a 300 mile range.

VW might make some changes to the design of the production version compared to the concept but that’s always to be expected from a vehicle that’s moving from the concept stage to production. However, the performance and battery specs that VW has previously shared are likely going to remain the same.

The company hasn’t confirmed yet precisely how much the I.D. Crozz is going to cost but it does say that it’s going to be affordable.
