It’s the most powerful production car Chevrolet has ever made, and probably the meanest-looking. The 2019 Corvette ZR1 takes one look at the Corvette Z06 and decides “oh no, 650 horsepower just isn’t enough,” then goes about redesigning the powertrain, aerodynamics, cooling, and more to deliver a lightning strike of a car. In fact, there’s more than enough to shock … Continue reading
Star Trek: Discovery launched in September to anticipation and questions, but more than that there was grumbling. After all, the show wasn’t easily accessible in the United States. In Canada, it aired on the Space channel, and in the rest of the worl…
Facebook has made quite a few headlines when it comes to fake news. In September, it was revealed that Russian groups may have spent $100,000 or more disseminating fake news posts on the social media platform during the 2016 election season. The comp…

Activision Blizzard announced the formation of a new business division a couple of years ago called Activision Blizzard Studios. It was said to be working on Call of Duty movies and a Skylanders TV show. While multiple CoD movies are in the pipeline, not much is known about them. Activision remains open to the idea as it believes that this presents an opportunity to expand the game’s base audience.
The head of Activision’s consumer products group Tim Kilpin says that the Call of Duty movies might help expand the base audience for this massive series. Since it’s an M-rated game, it doesn’t appeal to a more general demographic.
Activision thinks that the movies will present an opportunity to reach a little more broadly than the core audience of this series. However, it’s also aware that the storytelling has to be done well.
“Anytime you take a franchise as storied as this, with this kind of legacy, and expand it into a new form factor you have to be really careful,” Kilpin said, adding that if the script and the story isn’t right, Activision will decide not to come out with the Call of Duty movies.
“It’s not one of those situations where someone is saying, ‘I don’t care just get it made!’; that’s not what’s happening,” he added.
This goes to show that Activision is carefully considering all of its options so it won’t be making a rash decision about this anytime soon.

NVIDIA hasn’t shared any details about this next-generation GPU architecture at this point in time but if a new rumor is to be believed, the company’s new GPU architecture will be called “Ampere.” It’s expected to be unveiled next year at the GPU Technology Conference. The company doesn’t usually announce new GeForce graphics cards at its conference which is why many might be skeptical about this rumor.
According to the rumor, NVIDIA’s next-gen GPU architecture will be called Ampere. No technical details are available at this point in time so it’s difficult to say what improvements it’s going to bring compared to the existing Pascal architecture.
It’s claimed that at least on the GeForce front, NVIDIA will be jumping from Pascal to Ampere. The company might use its Volta GPU architecture for its AI and cloud computing markets. The rumor also claims that NVIDIA’s new Ampere-based graphics cards will succeed the company’s GeForce 10 series which is based on Pascal.
Bear in mind that this is just a rumor and nothing has been confirmed or even teased by NVIDIA regarding Ampere. There has been no mention of Ampere by the company while it has already talked about the Volta GPU architecture in the past.
The situation should clear up a bit after CES 2018. Many will expect some kind of announcement from NVIDIA at the trade show. It remains to be seen whether the company will make one.

You might have heard that Broadcom recently bid $130 billion to acquire Qualcomm. It was an unsolicited offer as Qualcomm has not offered itself for sale. Broadcom argued that this deal is compelling for the stakeholders and stockholders of both companies. Qualcomm was reportedly thinking about rejecting the offer and the company has now officially announced that it has decided not to accept Broadcom’s $130 billion offer.
Broadcom has offered a very significant amount of money for Qualcomm. If the latter had accepted, the combined entity would have gone on to become the third largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world.
The rejection of Broadcom’s offer is a unanimous decision by Qualcomm’s board of directors. The company is of the view that the offer “significantly undervalues” Qualcomm relative to its position in the industry and its future growth prospects.
“No company is better positioned in mobile, IoT, automotive, edge computing and networking within the semiconductor industry,” said Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf.
Since Qualcomm is a public company it was obligated to peruse the offer and the board has come to the decision that it’s better to reject Broadcom’s bid. The board and management have reiterated their commitment to driving value for the company’s shareholders.
The board has also expressed confidence in the CEO and his team’s execution of the strategy that aims to provide “far superior value to Qualcomm shareholders than the proposed offer.”
It’s unclear at this point in time if Broadcom is going to make a revised bid for Qualcomm. The company has not commented on this latest development as yet.

Roku today announced that it has added another popular brand to its Roku TV licensing program. Philips-branded TVs are manufactured for the U.S. market by Japan’s Funai. The smart TVs used to be powered by the in-house NetTV platform which wasn’t that great to begin with. New Philips-branded TVs will now come with Roku’s operating system out of the box, providing a much smarter connected TV experience.
A variety of Philips-branded TV sets are sold in the United States. These include 4K UltraHD models while some have support for Chromecast and Dolby Vision.
Funai, the company that makes these TVs for the U.S. market, hasn’t confirmed as yet which Philips models will come with Roku OS out of the box. One can expect that the 4K UltraHD models will have Roku to compete with similar products from companies like TCL.
The Roku OS enables users to access more than 500,000 movies and TV episodes. They can even access more than 5,000 streaming channels. The OS receives automatic updates so users already have the latest features and improvements.
It’s unclear right now how much the Philips Roku TV models are going to cost. Roku has confirmed, though, that some models are expected to be available in the United States this year.

Microsoft co-founder and ex-CEO Bill Gates has announced a $100 million personal commitment to fight Alzheimer’s. He will be investing money into the Dementia Discovery Fund which seeks to discover treatments for this disease. This contribution isn’t being made by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which already runs countless philanthropic projects across the globe. Gates will provide this $100 million himself.
Bill Gates will first invest $50 million in the Dementia Discovery Fund. It’s a venture capital fund that seeks to bring together industry and government to try and find treatments for this brain-wasting disease.
He will follow up that investment with an additional $50 million which will be provided to the startup ventures that are working in Alzheimer’s research.
As people live longer, the number of people suffering from this disease and other forms of dementia continues to rise. It takes a growing emotional and financial toll on people suffering from this disease.
“It’s a huge problem, a growing problem, and the scale of the tragedy – even for the people who stay alive – is very high,” Gates told Reuters in an interview.
Even though there has been decades of scientific research on Alzheimer’s, there’s no treatment to slow the progression of the disease. Existing drugs can only ease some of the symptoms.
Gates is optimistic that with focused and well-funded innovation treatments can be found, even if it may take a decade to reach them.
