The Moto X4 is a smartphone with a strange tale to tell. Going beyond its pedigree, it’s release as the US’ first and so far only Android One model may have shown how US consumers might not be that too enthralled by the concept of a mid-range Nexus, especially one that is only available from Google’s Project Fi. Amazon came … Continue reading

Apple: Touch ID For The iPhone X Was Never An Option

Prior to the iPhone X being announced, there was one consistent rumor and that is Apple would be getting rid of the home button once and for all. This led to many wondering about how Touch ID would work: would it be moved to the back like what we’ve seen with some Android phones, or would it be embedded into the display?

The latter possibility was one of the more popular rumors floating around, but safe to say that Apple surprised many by eliminating Touch ID completely and replacing it with Face ID. As it turns out, this was pretty much Apple’s plan from the start, or at least that’s according to Dan Riccio, the SVP of Hardware Engineering at Apple who recently spoke to TechCrunch in an interview.

Riccio addressed the rumors that persisted in 2016 through 2017 regarding an embedded fingerprint sensor, in which he reiterated a claim from a report last month which claimed that Face ID replacing Touch ID was not a last minute option, “When we hit early line of sight on getting Face ID to be [as] good as it was, we knew that if we could be successful we could enable the product that we wanted to go off and do.”

He adds, “So we spent no time looking at fingerprints on the back or through the glass or on the side, because if we did those things — which would be a last-minute change — they would be a distraction relative to enabling the more important thing that we were trying to achieve — which was Face ID done in a high-quality way.”

Best Buy Eliminates $100 iPhone X Premium Following Backlash

The iPhone X is one of the most popular smartphones at the moment, and the 5-6 week shipping estimates we’re seeing is a pretty good indication of that. This is why one could hardly fault retailers such as Best Buy for trying to get in on the action by charging customers a $100 premium on the price of the phone.

Unfortunately for Best Buy this has led to some pretty bad backlash, although the good news is that the retailer has since had a change of heart and has removed that option for customers, according to a report from Bloomberg. According to Best Buy spokeswoman Danielle Schumann, “Although there was clearly demand for the un-activated iPhone X, selling it that way cost more money, causing some confusion with our customers and noise in the media. That’s why we decided a few days ago to only sell the phone the traditional way, through installment billing plans.”

For those hearing about this for the first time, Best Buy had started to charge customers a $100 premium on the already-expensive iPhone X. However this was a premium that was only applicable to those who wanted to buy the phone outright, versus buying it from a carrier via installment plans, in which Best Buy was pretty much offering the iPhone X for the same price as on Apple’s website.

Best Buy claimed at that time that customers told them that they would like the option of buying a phone that is not “activated”/tied to a carrier. Schumann at that time had said, “Our customers have told us they want this flexibility and sometimes that has a cost.” In any case it looks like the option is no longer available, so it’s back to business for now.

Instagram Now Supports More Right-To-Left Languages

There are many languages around the world, but unfortunately even in this day and age, not all of them are supported when it comes to technology. This means that native speakers in certain languages will not get support when it comes to apps, websites, services, and more, although thankfully this is something that is changing moving forwards.

The good news for some Instagram users is that the company has recently announced that they’ll be adding more right-to-left language support, which means that those who read/write Arabic, Hebrew, and Farsi will have no problems using Instagram to publish and look at posts written in their native language.

According to Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, “I’m proud of our efforts to make Instagram one of the most inclusive and diverse platforms in the world. With this update we hope even more Arabic, Hebrew and Farsi speakers are able to use Instagram to connect with the people and interests that matter to them.”

However the only shortcoming to this particular update is that while users can see posts in these languages, users won’t be able to translate them just yet. Instagram has a built-in translation feature but it seems that it won’t work with these languages for now, but we suppose it could come at a later date.
