HP Is Installing An App On Its PCs That Slows Them Down

HP customers have made countless complaints about an app that the company has installed on some of its PCs which is actually slowing them down. The company has apparently been rolling out the app without permission from users. If that sounds familiar, Lenovo recently paid a $3.5 million for doing something similar.

Computer World has gathered many reports from HP customers which reveal that the company has been rolling out a telemetry app on PCs without asking for the user’s permission.

The app is called “HP Touchpoint Analytics Service” and it looks to be a replacement for the self-managed HP Touchpoint Manager solution. Its official description reveals that the app will provide users with “the tools you need to ensure all your managed devices’ security — and brings you greater peace of mind”.

That’s not what it’s bringing to users, though. A complaint on the HP support website mentions that the app has been “making my computer work so hard I can hear it like cranking away and the light in the back of my computer is flashing rapidly in-tune with the cranking. In Task Manager I can see it starting and stopping numerous applications.”

What’s not clear is that how HP is rolling out this app to PCs. Perhaps it’s bundling them with the latest Windows updates. Users also don’t like that it’s sending telemetry data from their machines back to HP without their consent.

It’s possible to remove it entirely and it’s actually easy to do that. However, an official response from HP will certainly be appreciated, but one has yet to be issued.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 8 Finally Gets November Patch

Samsung rolled out the latest security patch for Android devices to many variants of the Galaxy Note 8 earlier this month. However, it didn’t release the November security patch for the unlocked Galaxy Note 8 early for some reason. Many people also buy unlocked handsets because there are no carriers to hold up software updates. It has taken Samsung almost the entire month of November but it has finally released the November security patch for the unlocked Galaxy Note 8 in the United States.

The security patch for November brings the fix for a crucial security flaw that was recently discovered in the WPA2 Wi-Fi security protocol. It affected almost all Wi-fi enabled devices since it was a vulnerability in the Wi-Fi security protocol and not due to a device-specific exploit.

Dubbed Krack, the vulnerability enabled attackers to tap into the traffic between wireless access points and devices connected to them. This left the devices open to remote ransomware code injection and also data theft.

The security patch also brings fixes for a variety of bugs that were found in the Android operating system and Samsung’s own software for the Galaxy Note 8.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 8 owners should expect to see an over-the-air update notification soon. Samsung has started rolling out software update version N950U1UEU2BQK1 for them in the United States.

Google Search Gets A New Tab For Finance Information

Google says that search interest in finance and stocks has more than doubled globally in the last five years. That’s why it feels the need to introduce an expanded finance experience inside Google Search on both desktop and mobile web. There’s now going to be a new search navigation tab called Finance which will provide easier access to finance information based on users’ interests.

The feature will help keep users in the loop about latest market news and help them get in-depth insights about companies they want to find out more about. This page will include performance information about stocks that users have chosen to follow as well. It will provide them with recommendations on other stocks to follow based on their interests, related news, market indices, and currencies.

This new experience can be found in Google Search by clicking on “more” after performing a search on Google for finance-related information or in “Market summary” in the finance section of Search.

Users can also access this new experience by visiting google.com/finance. As part of this new experience, Google is retiring several features of the original Google Finance.

These include the portfolio and the ability to download portfolios and historical tables. Google does say that the list of stocks from a users’ portfolio will remain accessible through Your Stocks in the search result.

Windows 10 Timeline Feature Will Be Live For Insiders Soon

Microsoft detailed the new Timeline feature for Windows 10 earlier this year. The feature has been designed to enable Windows 10 users to switch between multiple devices effortlessly. This includes Android and iOS devices. The company built a Timeline view into the existing Task View feature for Windows 10. It provides an overview of the apps currently running across Windows 10, Android, and iOS devices. Microsoft is going to release this feature to members of the Insiders program soon.

When the feature was first detailed in May this year, Microsoft had said that the Windows 10 Timeline feature would be included in the Fall Creators Update.

The company then confirmed in July that Timeline won’t be ready in time for the Fall Creators Update. It was then planning for it to be in early insider builds shortly after the Fall Creators Update was released.

Microsoft has confirmed that this feature will be included in the next Windows 10 build for members of the Insiders program. Those who are on the Fast ring will be able to try out this feature first before everyone else.

Timeline remains in development so even if there are some issues with this feature on its first public outing, we can be sure that all of them will be fixed by the time this feature is to be rolled out to the public in the next major Windows 10 update.
