New Video Proves iPhone X’s Face ID Can Be Tricked By Masks

While facial recognition tech isn’t new, many are understandably curious about the iPhone X’s Face ID and the TrueDepth camera system. During the iPhone X’s unveiling, Apple claimed to have worked with mask makers to ensure that the system could not be tricked by a mask, although a video posted earlier this month seemed to dispel that claim.

There was a bit of debate going on with the video, as some claimed that the “Require Attention” feature was not enabled. In case you needed more proof, the company behind the first video, a Vietnamese security company called Bkav, has since uploaded a new video with a new mask made out of different material, 2D infrared images of eyes taped over the mask, and also with the “Require Attention” feature on.

For those unfamiliar, the Require Attention feature is an additional layer of security where it requires users to have their eyes pointed at the phone in order for it to unlock. This means that someone can’t hold it up to your face when you’re looking away to turn it on, or use it while you’re sleeping, and is also one of the features meant to protect the phone from masks.

Ultimately Bkav believes that Face ID is less secure compared to Touch ID, especially when you consider that the mask costs about $200 to make, although whether or not you’re worth the trouble to the thief is a different story. That being said, we’re sure that Apple does plan to improve on Face ID over time, like they did with Touch ID, so it is possible that Apple could find a way to address this.

YouTube Go Is Out Of Beta, Available In Some Parts Of The World

Most of us tend to take our fast and stable internet speeds for granted, but there are some parts of the world where having a connection is already considered a luxury. This is why we’ve started to see how some companies are creating “lite” versions of their services aimed at such markets, and YouTube is one of them.

Last year YouTube Go was announced as a means for emerging markets with slow internet speeds to still be able to enjoy YouTube on their mobile devices. However the app was in beta which meant that it wasn’t available to all users yet, but not anymore. YouTube Go has recently exited its beta which means that it is now available to all, or at least in the markets that it is available in.

This includes markets such as Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, and more. The full list of supported markets can be found on Google’s website. For those unfamiliar, YouTube Go is basically YouTube but packaged as a smaller app so as to download quicker and also to take up less space on low-end phones that might not pack much memory.

It also allows users to control the amount of data it uses, as well as download videos so that users will be able to watch them offline when they might not have an internet connection.

Woman Pays $100 For iPhone 6, Gets A Box Of Potatoes Instead

There is that popular saying where if something is too good to be true, it generally is. However we suppose sometimes a deal might be too good to pass up for some people, and a recent example took place in Wisconsin, where a woman thought she was getting a good deal for an iPhone 6, only to end up with a box of potatoes.

The story goes is that the woman claims to have seen a black truck with balloons and Black Friday sale posters driving around her neighborhood. She also claims that the vehicle was filled with various electronics, clothes, and accessories, and so she thought she had managed to land herself a pretty sweet deal when she managed to negotiate with the driver to sell her an iPhone 6 (or what she thought was the iPhone 6) for $100.

However she discovered when she got home and opened the box that inside was not a brand new iPhone 6 waiting for her, but a bunch of chopped potatoes that appeared to have already oxidized. To the woman’s credit, she did check that the box contained an iPhone 6 when she struck up the deal and even tested it out for herself.

It was when she agreed to purchase it that the driver did the old bait-and-switch and swapped out the working device with the potatoes. “He turns around and puts the phone in the box with a piece of paper, he hands it to me, I hand him the money, I get in my car and drive home.” For those interested in seeing the woman’s video where she’s essentially ranting about getting cheated, head on over to LiveLeak.com (warning: strong language used in the video).

1 Million VR Headsets Shipped For The First Time In A Single Quarter

While there is definitely excitement surrounding virtual reality (VR) technology, the only problem that was saw at the start was the pricing on these devices, coupled with the fact that you would need a pretty powerful PC to run it (or own the PS4, in the case of the PlayStation VR). This meant that adoption of the technology would not be as quick as some of these companies had hoped.

However that appears to be changing because according to the latest numbers from Canalys (via VentureBeat), the number of VR headsets shipped in a single quarter has managed to hit 1 million units. This marks the first time that those numbers are seen, and hopefully will be maintained in the subsequent quarters.

According to Canalys research analyst Vincent Thielke, this is thanks to price cuts which have made the headsets more affordable, like with the Oculus Rift which was reduced from $599 down to $399. “VR adoption in the consumer segment is highly dependent on price, and Oculus’ strategy of lowering prices has definitely helped drive adoption.”

The report also shows that in terms of dedicated VR headsets, Sony’s PlayStation VR is the market leader with a 49% market share, followed by Oculus at 21%, and HTC at 16%.

Actor Tom Holland Teases His Role In Upcoming ‘Uncharted’ Movie

Not much is known about Sony’s upcoming Uncharted movie, save for its director which was confirmed last year to be Shawn Levy. As for who will be starring in it, earlier this year it was suggested that Spider-Man: Homecoming’s actor Tom Holland could be playing the role of Nathan Drake, but nothing official has been announced yet.

However if you wanted more evidence that Holland could indeed be in the Uncharted movie, a Twitter user who goes by the name Cade Onder has recently discovered a video (via Comicbook) uploaded onto Holland’s Instagram account. The video has since been taken down, but it basically shows Holland playing Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection on his PS4, in which he captioned the video by saying, “For research purposes”.

Like we said, Sony has yet to confirm anything, but this teaser certainly does suggest that Holland has indeed landed the role, unless of course he is simply trolling us. It is an interesting choice as Holland is considerably younger than Nathan Drake in the game, but it could be that the movie will feature a young Nathan Drake.

There is still no release date set for the Uncharted movie, but last year Levy expressed his desire to complete filming it by the end of 2017, meaning that its release will be in 2018 at the earliest.
