Sony Xperia X Performance Oreo Update Released

Those who own a Sony Xperia X Performance should keep an eye out for a firmware update notification today as the company has started rolling out the Oreo update for this device. Sony has been on a roll recently with the Oreo update for some of its handsets. It released Oreo for the Xperia XZ and XZs merely days ago. When those devices received Oreo, it was clear that the Xperia X Performance would also end up getting the Oreo update in the very near future.

Sony launched the Xperia X Performance in February last year. It came with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. It was updated to Android 7.1 Nougat in November last year. Oreo is likely the last major Android platform update that this device is ever going to get.

As is the case with most major firmware updates, Sony is likely rolling it out in stages which means it’s going to take some time before the Xperia X Performance Oreo update goes live in all regions. The Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Xperia X Performance brings all of the new features that are part and parcel of the Android 8.0 Oreo platform upgrade.

The update also brings Sony’s Xperia Actions feature which offers users intelligently suggested settings based on their usage. They also get all new gaming and commuting features. Sony has also redesigned app shortcuts by a long-press and the software will now provide easy access to actions.

Nintendo Switch Reportedly Won Black Friday 2017

Having recently been named Time’s gadget of the year, it appears that the Nintendo Switch continues to bring in more customers for the company. Adobe has released a new report highlighting the shopping trends in the United States over Thanksgiving and Black Friday. According to the report, the Nintendo Switch gaming console was the best selling product over the holidays in the country. That’s not surprising given that the Switch has been in high demand throughout the entire year.

Adobe Digital Insights reports that the Nintendo Switch has been outselling the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the United States. It was also the best selling product in the country this Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It was apparently among the best selling product on Veterans Day as well as the day before Thanksgiving even though Nintendo previously confirmed that Switch won’t be discounted for Black Friday.

The report published by Adobe Digital Insights is based on tracking of the largest digital retailers and is compiled after the analysis of billions of datapoints to base the sales figures on.

Do keep in mind that these figures only represent the largest online retailers in the country and don’t take into account sales made through offline channels. Nevertheless, the Nintendo Switch’s surging popularity can’t be denied.

Even Nintendo has committed to ramping up the Switch’s production to ensure that it can meet demand well into 2018.

VR Headset Quarterly Shipments Cross 1 Million For The First Time

The virtual reality industry is still in its infancy as companies continue to make advancements in VR software and hardware. The public is gradually opening up to the devices as well and they’re no longer considered niche products. The growing acceptance of virtual reality products can be evidenced by the surge in the quarterly shipments of virtual reality headsets. For the first time ever, quarterly shipments of virtual reality headsets have crossed one million units.

A new report from market research firm Canalys reveals that more than one million virtual reality headsets were shipped in the three months ending September 30th. This is the first time that the collective shipments of VR gadgets have broken the one million unit barrier.

Canalys also points out that the price cuts that OEMs have been delivering to customers have helped as well. VR adoption in the consumer segment is dependent on price. Major VR players like Oculus have made lowering their prices a strategy and that has helped drive adoption for its products. Other companies are using similar strategies.

Sony was found to be the market leader in the third quarter of this year as it shipped 490,000 PlayStation VR headsets. Oculus came in second place with 210,000 Rift headsets shipped. HTC came in third place with shipments of 160,000 Vive VR headsets.

Canalys predicts that the VR headset market will grow even further next year as it gains momentum from PC vendors who will launch new models that support Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality platform.

Google Trying To Defuse Tensions With Russia Over Website Rankings

Russia had recently said that it would retaliate if Google downranked the RT and Sputnik media outlets that are believed to be linked to the country’s government. Russia’s statement came after Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt remarked during a summit that the online search giant might downrank results from media outlets that are funded by the government. Google is now reportedly trying to defuse tension with Russia over website rankings.

According to the report, Google has sent a letter to Russia’s communications agency Roskomnadzor reiterated that the company does not change its search algorithm to downrank or re-rank individual websites. This might address Russia’s concerns that the search engine might discriminate against two of its key media outlets.

Roskomnadzor had written to Google earlier this month to seek clarification about Schidmt’s comments. “We’d like to inform you that by speaking about ranking of web-sources, including the websites of Russia Today and Sputnik, Dr. Eric Schmidt was referring to Google’s ongoing efforts to improve search quality,” Google said in its letter.

The letter was posted by Roskomnadzor on its website. Google reiterates in the letter that it does not change its algorithm to re-rank individual websites.

A spokeswoman for Google confirmed to Reuters that the company did send this letter to Russia’s communications agency but offered no further details. Roskomnadzor has not yet commented on the matter.

Samsung to tempt fate with battery that charges 5 times faster

Samsung’s fiasco with the Galaxy Note 7 last year put it in an odd position. On the one hand, it has to be extra careful about how it presents battery technology for as long as people remember the Galaxy Note 7. But, on the other hand, it is also pressured to develop new battery technologies that will prevent such things … Continue reading

Pokemon GO Accidents While Driving Costs Billions In Damages

The hype surrounding Pokemon GO when it was first released was very real, so much so that people just couldn’t stop playing the game, resulting in some playing while driving. This has caused a fair number of accidents, including the death of a 9-year old boy. Fast forward about a year or so later, the impact of these accidents is said to have amounted in the billions.

This is according to a study conducted by researchers at Purdue University where they found that nation-wide damage caused by drivers who played while driving amounted to $2-$7.3 billion in the first 148 days since the game was launched. This also takes into account two fatalities. However it should be pointed out that the number the researchers got was based on detailed accident reports for Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

The losses reported was $5.2 million to $25.5 million, but were then extrapolated to include the entire US, which means that the actual figure could be less, could be more, or could within the range of what the researchers found. We suppose it might not necessarily be the most accurate, but it is a rather telling figure all the same.

However it does seem to be in line with reports we’ve heard from other parts of the world, such as in Taiwan where since the game launched, it saw a spike in traffic ticket summons. Niantic has since implemented various features in the game designed to prevent or discourage gamers from playing while driving.

List Of Samsung Devices To Receive Oreo Update Leaked

Say what you will about Apple and their iPhones being overpriced and sporting features that Android phones have had for years, but if there’s one thing that’s hard to refute is Apple’s support for their iPhones, where they tend to offer support and major OS updates for devices as old as four years.

This is versus Android where depending on the manufacturer, might only see support for 1-2 major Android updates. However the good news for Samsung users is that Samsung could be looking to change that perception. In a post on Weibo (via BGR), an alleged list of Samsung devices that will receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update has been leaked.

Obviously handsets like the Galaxy S8, S8+, and the Note 8 are in that list, but what’s surprising is that the list includes devices as old as the Galaxy S6, which is in line with an earlier report. Other devices part of that list include the Note 5, the 2016 Galaxy A8 and A9 Pro, the Galaxy C series, along with some Samsung tablets from 2016.

It’s hard to say how accurate this list is or if it is even official, but since Samsung has yet to officially announce anything it’s probably best taken with a grain of salt. However if you’re still holding onto an older Samsung tablet or smartphone, perhaps it could eventually see the Oreo update.
