Welcome back from what was hopefully a nice long weekend. We’ve got our verdict on Google’s Pixel Buds, more news on that massive Yahoo data breach, and Time Inc.’s further struggles. Oh, and some new NASA tires inspired by chainmail.
When the Razer Phone was launched, many quickly picked up on the fact that just like quite a few handset makers out there, Razer has opted to drop the 3.5mm headphone jack on the phone. This meant that users who wanted to use headphones had to rely on either USB-C, Bluetooth, or use the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter.
Unsurprisingly there have been some who have been griping about the lack of the headphone jack, prompting Razer’s CEO Min-Liang Tan to take to Facebook to explain the reason why they removed the port. According to Tan, “By removing the headphone jack – we were able to increase the battery size significantly (I estimate we added 500maH more), improve thermals for performance and a whole lot more.”
“The trade off was not having the jack – but what sealed it for me was that we were able to get audiophile quality sound with the dedicated 24-Bit THX Certified DAC adapter – and I made sure we included that with every phone. Which basically means we give even better quality headphone audio for those who want to hold on to their analog headphones.”
Tan also points out that Razer also sells the Hammerhead earbuds which are offered in Bluetooth and more recently USB-C. We expect that over time we will see more companies head down this path, so if you’d rather not be caught unawares, perhaps now might be a good time to start looking into a set of Bluetooth headphones.

We in the tech world, especially the mobile industry, often obsess about pixel resolutions, color gamuts, and, lately, screen aspect and screen-to-body ratios. But like many of today’s technologies, they are designed to cater to the able-bodied majority. Technology, however, should be accessible, even and especially for those with physical handicaps. Samsung always boasts of having a wealth of expertise … Continue reading
NASA reinvents the wheel
Posted in: Today's ChiliNext time someone chides you for wasting your time reinventing the wheel, tell them that the smart folks at NASA did it too. Of course, they didn’t as much as reinvent the wheel as they made a new kind of wheel. The space agency, of course, has been toying with all sorts of new wheels that would let its machines … Continue reading
