Munich ends its long-running love affair with Linux

When Munich decided to ditch many of its Windows installations in favor of Linux in 2003, it was considered a groundbreaking moment for open source software — it was proof that Linux could be used for large-scale government work. However, it looks…

Motorola mocks Samsung ad that mocked the iPhone X

When Apple finally started shipping the iPhone X, Samsung put out an ad that more or less trolled Apple on how, after 10 years, it still lagged behind some of the innovations Samsung started. It was, in a way, telling iPhone users to “grow up”. Now out of the blue, Motorola is taking a shot at Samsung with a new … Continue reading

Google To Crack Down On Misleading Ticket Resale Websites

There are certain concerts or events that sell out pretty quickly due to their popularity, which means that for those who fail to make their purchase quickly, they’re pretty much out of luck and might have to turn to ticket resale websites who probably will charge higher than the original price, which we guess is to be expected.

However the good news is that Google wants to do their part in trying to crack down on this practice, or at least prevent customers from being misled. According to a report from The Guardian, Google will be making some changes in their advertising policy where ticket resale websites cannot advertise themselves as being an “official” source of tickets when they are in reality selling them secondhand.

According to Google’s support page, “To protect customers from scams and prevent potential confusion, resellers must clearly disclose on their website or app that they are a secondary market and aren’t the primary provider of the tickets. This disclosure should be easily visible and clearly explained in the top 20% of the reseller’s website, including the home page and any landing pages.”

Of course this doesn’t mean that these websites won’t charge a markup, it’s just that if they hope to continue serving Google’s ads, they will have to make it clearer that their prices are higher than the official prices, which in turn will make customers more aware of what they are paying for.

Bandai Launches ‘My Tamagotchi Forever’ For iOS And Android

If you grew up playing the Tamagotchi toys, you might have heard that over the years, Bandai has attempted to revive the franchise through a variety of means, such as through a smartwatch app and also re-releasing it as a physical toy. However if the idea of bringing around a toy isn’t an idea that you relish, not to worry.

Bandai Namco has recently announced the launch of a new Tamagotchi app called “My Tamagotchi Forever”. Note that this isn’t the first time that Bandai has attempted to launch a Tamagotchi app for mobile devices. The company tried to do so back in 2013, but it looks like they’re trying again.

However it seems that the company’s latest attempt will be different from before. The concept is the same, where you have to take care of your pet, but Bandai will also introduce mini games that lets users unlock additional items such as food, costumes, decorations, and more. Alternatively these can also be purchased using real-life money, which we guess is Bandai’s way of monetizing it.

It also seems that there is an opportunity for augmented reality as users can take photos standing next to their Tamagotchi, as you can see in the video above. According to its website, the app is scheduled for a launch in 2018, but Touch Arcade claims that the app has already been released in Canada.

Final Fantasy XIV’s Director Interested In A Switch Version Of The Game

We’re sure that seeing Final Fantasy games being brought over onto the Nintendo Switch is something that fans would love to see happen. In fact there was a brief moment of excitement when it was suggested that Final Fantasy XV for the Switch was being considered (there are currently no plans).

However if you’re more of an MMORPG kind of gamer, you’ll be interested to learn that Final Fantasy XIV’s director Naoki Yoshida has reiterated that he is still interested in creating a version for the Switch. Of course this doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be a Switch version of the game, but Yoshida’s openness to the idea is encouraging.

As expected there will be certain obstacles to creating the game for the Switch, such as cross-server functionality. Speaking to Eurogamer, Yoshida was quoted as saying, “I’d like to open it up to as many platforms as possible – we want to include as many players as possible. Not just Switch – even Xbox, if it’s interested in this, we’d like to open it up. We’d like to have it on as much hardware as possible.”

As it stands, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is available on Windows, Mac, the PS3 and the PS4. However it is possible that it could eventually find its way to other platforms as Yoshida notes that the talks have been positive. “Positive discussion is ongoing. It’s not as if we’re not doing anything – we are actually talking to them, and the platform holders are showing their attitude in a more positive way.”

Singapore To Expand Its Self-Driving Bus Service In 2022

Self-driving cars, buses, and other modes of transportation is expected to be the way of the future, and over in Singapore, the country has already begun testing out various services, such as driverless shuttles, self-driving taxis, and also autonomous bus services. For the most part these are running as trials, but Singapore expects to expand those services in the near future.

The country’s Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan has announced that in 2022, they will be expanding their self-driving bus service to cover three additional neighborhoods. Note that this is still part of a test and the buses will be used during off-peak periods, which makes sense since we’re sure that commuters going to work and coming home wouldn’t want to be late due to technical glitches.

According to Khaw, “We expect that the AVs will greatly enhance the accessibility and connectivity of our public transport system, particularly for the old, families with the young, and the less mobile. More importantly, we can gain further insights into how we can develop new towns or refurbish existing ones for the safe mass deployment of AVs.”

Note that the Singapore government has recently announced that they will stop adding new cars to their roads starting next year, with that rule applying to buses in 2021, so hopefully with the addition of self-driving buses, their efficiency will help reduce the need for additional cars or buses on the road in the future.

Google Patents Laptop Hinge That Automatically Aligns With The User’s Face

The problem with laptop screens is that because of how laptops are positioned when on our laps or on the table, that at certain angles it’s hard to see the screen. This is why it isn’t uncommon to see people constantly adjusting their laptop screens when they are out and about, but that’s something Google might change in the future.

In a patent discovered by Patently Apple (via 9to5Google), it seems that Google has filed a patent for a motorized laptop hinge that can automatically adjust itself based on the user’s face. This means that if the laptop detects that your face is not at an ideal angle, the laptop’s display could move accordingly to make it better for your viewing.

The patent reads, “In one embodiment, the computer may have an image sensor configured to detect the user’s face and continuously adjust the angle and position of the lid to keep the face in the field of view of the camera and/or keep the lid in the optimum viewing position.” We’re not sure how this might be better than adjusting it yourself since the motor could be slower than using our hands, but it’s an interesting idea.

The patent also talks about how the motorized hinge could allow a laptop to open up when the user is nearby (like those motorized toilet seats you find in Japan), or when the user touches the laptop itself. Whether or not this patent actually becomes a reality remains to be seen, but the patent was filed back in 2013 which means that it has been around for a while.
