Microsoft Office Android Apps Are Working On Chromebooks Now

Microsoft’s Office suite of productivity applications has been available for Android since the past couple of years. However, even though Chromebooks have the ability to run Android apps, these apps weren’t made compatible with Chromebooks for some reason. Chromebook users certainly didn’t like this as it prevented them from getting work done on their device using Microsoft’s apps. It appears that Microsoft has had a change of heart now.

According to reports, Microsoft has quietly made its Office for Android apps compatible with Chromebooks. The company hasn’t made any formal announcements about this but there have been multiple reports online saying that the Office apps are now working on many Chromebook models.

The folks at Chrome Unboxed have tested out the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps for Android on the Samsung Chromebook Pro, Acer Chromebook 15, the Google Pixelbook, and others and report that they’re working very well.

Most customers who buy a Chromebook likely use Google Docs for their productivity needs. However, Microsoft Office remains the most popular productivity suite in the world and these apps now let them access Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on their Chromebooks without having to switch ecosystems. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Users who have a 10.1 inch Chromebook or smaller can create and edit documents for free after they log into a Microsoft account. For Chromebooks that are larger, they will require an Office 365 subscription to edit documents.

Nokia 8 Oreo Update Released

It was confirmed not too long ago that the Nokia 8 will receive its Android 8.0 Oreo update in the near future. That day has finally come. Nokia 8 owners will be delighted to find out that HMD Global has now started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update for their handset. As HMD Global has promised its customers a pure Android experience, this latest iteration of the Android operating system also doesn’t bring any skins or bloatware to the Nokia 8.

HMD Global collaborated with its customers under the Nokia phones beta labs program to listen to their feedback and incorporate it into its latest software update for its flagship device.

“We’re proud to deliver our pure and secure take of Android 8.0 Oreo on the Nokia 8,” said Juho Sarvikas, the chief product officer at HMD Global. He added that the company took its time to test, optimize, and refine the update to ensure that users get the best possible Android experience.

The Nokia 8 Android 8.0 Oreo update is a vanilla version of the operating system. What that means is there are no custom skins slowing down the user experience or apps that just bloat the handset without serving any real purpose.

Nokia 8 owners will soon receive an over-the-air update notification when the firmware goes live in their region. HMD Global has said that it’s going to release Oreo for its other Nokia smartphones soon as well.

Galaxy S6 Android 8.0 Oreo Update Release Might Be Possible

Samsung doesn’t release more than two major Android platform updates for its flagship smartphones. That’s the case with most Android smartphones. However, if a new report is to be believed, perhaps Samsung might make an exception for the Galaxy S6 and release the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the 2015 flagship.

Reddit user CyberConCode asked multiple Samsung customer care representatives if the company is planning to release the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Galaxy S6. At least one representative seemed very confident that the company is going to release this update for the Galaxy S6.

Samsung hasn’t said if it’s going to extend the support period for major flagship smartphones. Many of its customers who have purchased flagship smartphones in the past would certainly feel that it should do that. However, there’s no official confirmation from Samsung about this just yet.

If that’s true, it could mean that Samsung’s flagship smartphone will receive at least three years of support for major Android platform updates instead of two. It would be another way for the company to provide more value for money to those who pay top dollar for its flagship smartphones.

It merits mentioning here, though, that Samsung’s customer support representatives have been wrong on many accounts in the past particularly when it comes to information about software updates. Until there’s more evidence to support this theory, maybe don’t keep your fingers crossed for the Galaxy S6’s Oreo update.

iPhone X Demand Reportedly Hasn’t Peaked Yet

It was reported earlier this week that iPhone X delivery times are improving. Some attributed the improvement to the iPhone X demand hitting its peak. It would suggest that there aren’t as many people putting money down for an iPhone X as before so the shipping estimates have subsequently improved. However, a well known Apple analyst has disputed the idea that the iPhone X demand has hit its peak.

KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that the improvement in iPhone X shipping estimates is not because demand for the new flagship has stopped growing. Kuo claims that it’s because improvements have been made in the supply chain to further streamline the process.

There have been countless reports of problems in the iPhone X supply chain. There were blamed for the handset being in short supply at launch. The iPhone X output has been plagued by major product issues for months, according to previous reports.

Kuo says that some of these major issues have now been resolved and that Foxconn, Apple’s main manufacturing partner, is now building up to 550,000 iPhone X units per day. That’s compared to the up to 150,000 units that it was putting together during the weeks before launch. Kuo says that this is why iPhone X shipping estimates have improved.

The new estimated delivery times for the iPhone X are now between 1 to 2 weeks.

OnePlus 5 Face Unlock Feature Possibly Included In Oreo Update

OnePlus unveiled its new flagship smartphone recently, the OnePlus 5T. It comes with several improvements and Face Unlock is one of the new features. It enables users to scan their face to control access to their device. A new report suggests that the OnePlus 5 might also get the Face Unlock feature when its Android 8.0 Oreo update is released in the coming months.

The OnePlus 5T’s Face Unlock feature doesn’t rely on any complex facial recognition sensors like the iPhone X. It justs uses the front-facing camera to control access to the device. So, in theory, if OnePlus wanted to bring this feature to the OnePlus 5, there are no hardware limitations on the device that would prevent it from doing so.

It’s unclear at this point in time when the OnePlus 5 Android 8.0 Oreo update is going to be released. The handset should get it in the coming months.

According to the report, the Oreo update is going to bring several new features for the handset including the picture-in-picture mode, a new camera and gallery interface, and the Face Unlock feature from the OnePlus 5T.

OnePlus has previously said that it’s going to release an Oreo beta for the OnePlus 5 by the end of this month. Whether or not the Face Unlock feature will be present in the first beta remains to be seen.
