Microsoft may not be making any Windows-powered smartphones anymore but that doesn’t mean you can’t head over to its online store right now and purchase a smartphone. It has teamed up with Samsung in the past to launch “Microsoft Edition” variants of its flagship smartphones. Microsoft has now started selling the Galaxy Note 8 Microsoft Edition online. Its the very same Galaxy Note 8 that we all know and love with some pre-installed Microsoft software.
The Galaxy Note 8 Microsoft Edition is now available for purchase from the company’s online store. It comes pre-installed with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and OneNote. Even the Cortana virtual assistant is present on the handset straight out of the box. It replaces Samsung’s default launcher with the Microsoft Launcher.
Microsoft started selling the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ Microsoft Edition just last week. They too feature the company’s software. Everything else remains the same. There’s no difference in the specs or features of these Microsoft Edition devices.
The Galaxy Note 8 Microsoft Edition is available for purchase right away. It costs $929 but the company has it on sale for $779.
Don’t worry if you have already bought a Galaxy Note 8 from someplace else. You can transform it into a Microsoft Edition device by simply downloading all of the aforementioned apps from the Google Play Store.

Sony has earned a reputation for being quick with major software updates and those who own a Xperia XZ or XZs in the United States will be delighted to find out that the company is now rolling out the much-awaited Android 8.0 Oreo update for the handsets. The update had been previously announced for both devices and it’s now being rolled out to users across the country.
Sony has started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Xperia XZ and XZs. The build number has been updated from 41.2.A.7.76 to version 41.3.A.0.401. Since it’s a major update, the firmware file weighs in at around 1.2GB. That’s to be expected with a major update of this kind.
Some new features that Sony has added to complement Oreo’s feature include Xperia Actions. These are intelligently suggested settings based on the user’s preferences. There are all new gaming and commuting features as well.
The Oreo update that’s rolling out for both handsets also features the November security patch so it brings all of the latest security fixes for the Android platform as well. It doesn’t look like Sony has added support for Project Treble, at least for the Xperia XZ.
Sony is likely going to release the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Xperia X Performance in the near future. Hopefully, it will get the update before the end of the year as well.

Popular photo-sharing website Imgur has confirmed that it was notified of a potential security breach earlier this week that occurred in 2014. The site says that the hack resulted in 1.7 million Imgur accounts being compromised. The leaked data includes email addresses and passwords of users. Imgur continues to investigate the intrusion and promises to inform users as quickly as possible to what it knows and what it’s doing in response.
Imgur received an email earlier this week from a security researcher who frequently deals with data breaches. The researcher believed that he was sent data which included information of Imgur users.
The website’s team arranged to securely receive the data from the researcher and then started working on validating the data that belonged to its users.
Imgur confirmed a couple of days back that approximately 1.7 million user accounts were compromised back in 2014. The compromised information includes only email addresses and passwords. Since the website never asks for real names, addresses, phone numbers or other personally identifying information, no such information of that kind was leaked.
The website is investigating how this breach happened. It reiterates that users’ passwords are always encrypted in its database. It believes that the encryption may have been cracked with brute force due to an older hashing algorithm that was used back then. Imgur updated its algorithm to the new bcrypt algorithm last year.
Affected users have already been notified of the breach. Those who were Imgur users with accounts back then should probably change their passwords out of an abundance of caution.

CBS Ends Channel Blackout On Dish

Dish subscribers were unable to access some CBS channels over Thanksgiving due to a blackout by the latter. The two companies had failed to find a middle ground over a carriage agreement which meant that Dish customers couldn’t watch NFL games this Thanksgiving. The blackout seems to have pushed things along as the two have now reached a multi-year deal which covers networks like CBS, CBS Sports Network, Pop, and the Smithsonian channel.
After this new multi-year carriage agreement was confirmed, Dish said that the channels that were previously blacked out are now being restored to its customers.
According to reports, CBS wanted Dish to bundle modestly rated cable networks like CBS Sports Network, Smithsonian, and Pop with the main CBS channel. This was something that Dish didn’t want to do.
CBS also argued that Dish complained about the fees that it was asking for its cable networks while paying “at least one cable network more than double our asking price, for far less than half the ratings.”
“We are pleased we have reached a deal with DISH, who recognizes the value that the number one Network brings to viewers in these markets,” said Ray Hopkins, the president of TV networks distribution at CBS.
Both companies haven’t revealed any details about the new deal. No financial terms have been disclosed as well.
