Back in September, Hulu revealed plans to integrate Alexa voice commands with its service. At the time, Hulu only said that this new functionality would be coming sometime in the fall, failing to get more specific. It turns out that “sometime in fall” is today, with Alexa voice commands rolling out to Hulu users now. While many things that operate … Continue reading

The BBC wants you to know that it’s serious about producing virtual reality content. The broadcaster has launched a new VR division that will be tasked with producing interesting virtual reality experiences. The division’s first production is a spacewalk experience from the International Space Station. Home — A VR Spacewalk was developed by the BBC in collaboration with digital production studio Rewind.
The BBC’s VR division is going to work with “digital experts,” content creators, and showrunners to create interesting virtual reality experiences.
The first film about the spacewalk is based on the training programs of NASA and the European Space Agency. Viewers are taken on a repair job outside the International Space Station. Virtual reality really is the perfect medium to experience the spacewalk in.
This VR film has previously been showcased at many film festivals but it hadn’t been released to the public. That changes today. Home — A VR Spacewalk is now available via YouTube.
BBC has made VR content before this as well. Previous films covered the refugee crisis and human trafficking. Don’t expect the BBC to keep churning out these VR experiences at a rapid pace, though. The broadcaster has said that it’s going to release them infrequently as it wants to create “a small number of high impact pieces.”

All major mobile carriers in the United States have been working on 5G networks but they’ve yet to start rolling them out. Verizon, the country’s largest mobile carrier, has said that it’s going to launch its 5G service in five cities across the United States by next year. The rollout will start with Sacramento, California in the second half of next year.
Verizon hasn’t provided any more information beyond this. The information that is provided so far suggests that the 5G network will go live in all five cities by the end of next year. It’s yet to confirm the names of the remaining four cities.
“The targeted initial launches we are announcing today will provide a strong framework for accelerating 5G’s future deployment on the global standards,” said Hans Vestberg, Verizon’s chief technology officer.
The carrier hasn’t even detailed which technologies it’s going to be using to fire up this next-generation network and what kind of speeds its customers can expect to get.
It does say that details about the launch in Sacramento and the announcement of additional markets will be provided at a later date. The carrier has already trialed its 5G residential applications across 11 different markets this year. The commercial launch will be based on customer experience.

Popular digital currency broker Coinbase has suffered a major defeat to the Internal Revenue Service. A federal court in California has ordered Coinbase to reveal identifying information about 14,355 users who sold, sent, bought, or received more than $20,000 through their accounts in a single year between 2013 and 2015. It fought the case for almost an entire year before losing out to the IRS. Coinbase estimates that 14,355 of its users fit the bill.
Coinbase can find some solace in the fact that there’s a $20,000 limit to this order. The IRS had previously been seeking information on any and all Coinbase users over the same period. The request also included all communications made between the user and Coinbase. This was found a bit too excessive by the court and was therefore not granted.
Coinbase will now have to provide the IRS with the account user’s name, address, birth date, tax payer ID as well as all records of account activity. If there are any associated account statements, they will need to be turned over to the IRS as well.
The information will be enough for the IRS to definitively link accounts to individuals and the detailed records that it’s going to get will also help it to pinpoint other accounts that these users have sent money to.
There isn’t necessarily a claim of suspicion against these users. The IRS wants to look into the discrepancy between Coinbase users and U.S. citizens that are reporting Bitcoin gains to the IRS. Even though Coinbase has almost six million users, fewer than 1,000 U.S. citizens have actually reported their virtual currency holdings to the IRS>

American Airlines Doesn’t Have Any Pilots For Christmas Because Of Computer Glitch
Posted in: Today's Chili
Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for all modes of travel. People just want to get to their destinations so that they can see their families over the holiday season. You can imagine that airlines particularly try to win over as much business as they possibly can over this busy season. It seems that American Airlines is out of luck this holiday season as a computer glitch has left it without any pilots. The said glitch has allowed all of the airline’s pilots to take a vacation during the week of Christmas.
The union that represents the airline’s pilots has told Reuters that more than 15,000 airplanes currently don’t have any pilot assignments in December.
The management disclosed the computer glitch to the union recently. The union said in a statement that “thousands of flights currently do not have pilots assigned to fly them during the upcoming critical holiday period.”
The system that bids for pilots’ off days based on seniority has reportedly developed a glitch of some sort. This has led to the system granting time off to all American Airlines pilots during the holiday season.
American Airlines says that it’s working on a solution. While the computer glitch will be sorted out in due course, it’s also offering 1.5x pay for pilots to fill in during this period. The airline has also said that it has reserve pilots to help cover flying in December and that it’s going to pay pilots “as much as we are allowed to pay them per the contract” to solve this problem.
