Smart speakers to outsell wearables during U.S. holidays, as demand for wearables slows

Smart speakers will likely outsell wearable devices this holiday season. That’s the latest prediction from analysts at eMarketer, which forecasts a slowing growth rate for devices like fitness trackers and smartwatches here in the U.S. The wearable market is continuing to grow, to be clear, but it’s struggling to reach the mainstream. Next year, only 20 percent of the U.S. adult… Read More

Printed photos can fool Windows 10's Hello face authentication

Windows 10’s facial authentication system might be able to tell the difference between you and your twin, but it could apparently be fooled with a photo of your face. According to researchers from German security firm SySS, systems running previous v…

In 2017, society started taking AI bias seriously

A crime-predicting algorithm in Florida falsely labeled black people re-offenders at nearly twice the rate of white people. Google Translate converted the gender-neutral Turkish terms for certain professions into “he is a doctor” and “she is a nurse”…

Instagram adds commenting directly from the photo feed

We wouldn’t say that commenting on an Instagram post is a hassle, but it is slower than it could be. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could simply share your thoughts while you’re still in your main photo feed? You might have that option right now. Instagr…

Windows 10 Facial Recognition Fooled With Printed Picture

The Windows Hello facial recognition system in Windows 10 has been fooled by security researchers from Germany using nothing more than a printed picture. Researchers from the German pen-testing firm SYSS report that Windows 10 PCs that have not yet been updated to the Fall Creators Update are vulnerable to this “simple spoofing attack using a modified printed photo of an authorized person.” They were able to gain access using a printed photo on multiple versions of Windows 10 and different hardware.

The researchers tested this spoofing attack using a Dell Latitude machine and a LilBit USB camera. They also tested it on Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 running multiple versions of Windows 10. They went as far back as version 1511 which was one of the first Windows 10 releases.

They also report that even enabling Microsoft’s anti-spoofing feature for Windows 10 on these older versions doesn’t help. The attack works when the anti-spoofing feature is disabled on the Creators Update as well as the Fall Creators Update.

In order to block the spoofing attack, users have to make sure that they’re running the Fall Creators Update. That’s not enough, though. They also have to setup Windows Hello facial recognition from scratch after updating and enable anti-spoofing.

Since most modern notebooks don’t support Windows Hello’s anti-spoofing feature, users may find that their devices remain vulnerable even if they’re on the latest update and have set up the feature from scratch.

Microsoft has not commented on this as yet. Best follow the security firm’s recommendations if you want to ensure that no one gains unauthorized access to your machine using Windows Hello.

LG Unveils 34 Inch 5K Ultrawide HDR Monitor

LG is going to showcase many new products at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 next month. The company will introduce upgraded models of its monitor lineup at the convention. LG has also confirmed that it will showcase a 32 inch ultrawide 5K HDR monitor at CES 2018. The company calls the monitor its very first 21:9 5K ultrawide monitor.

LG will also introduce its new 32 inch UHD 4K monitor at CES 2018. It’s the first to offer the company’s advanced Nano IPS technology. This technology involves the use of nanometer-sized particles to absorb excess light wavelengths on the screen. It results in enhanced intensity and purity of on-screen colors for a more accurate viewing experience.

It can connect to Thunderbolt 3 notebooks like the MacBook Pro with a single cable. It also supports 4K daisy chaining for easy set up of dual 4K monitors.

The company’s 34 inch ultrawide 5K HDR monitor promises a resolution of 5120×2160 pixels. The monitor is geared towards users who rely on heavy multitasking so it’s going to be great for app developers, photographers, and video editors.

Aside from HDR600 and Nano IPS technology, it also features a Thunderbolt 3 port which allows for the transmission of 5K images at 60Hz with a single cable.

LG will showcase these new monitors at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 next month in Las Vegas. Pricing and availability information has not yet been revealed.

Sprint 5G Service To Go Live By 2019

The White House recently declared the rollout of nationwide 5G wireless service a national security priority. It’s not like it had to convince the country’s major carriers to pay attention to this technology as they’ve already been working on it. Verizon previously confirmed that its 5G network will go live in five cities next month. Sprint has now said that it’s going to offer 5G service and devices in the United States by 2019.

Sprint has said that its priority is mobile 5G and that it’s working with Qualcomm and parent company SoftBank to develop technologies that will aid in wide-scale 5G deployment. It’s planning to provide commercial 5G services and compatible devices in late 2019.

It’s possibly going to be a slow rollout and it’s too early to predict which cities will be the first to receive Sprint’s 5G network. It goes without saying that it’s going to take a considerable amount of time before any major carrier can launch a nationwide 5G network.

Verizon will get the ball rolling on its 5G efforts starting next year. It will be interesting to see how the market responds to the network and how quickly Verizon is able to scale up the network to additional cities across the United States.

Apple Reportedly Working On New Tech To Increase Battery Capacity

We all want our smartphones to offer the best possible battery capacity. Manufacturers have to strike a balance between the powerful specs and features that they put into their devices against a reasonable battery life. As Apple is expected to introduce 3D sensing and augmented reality features that require more power in 2019’s iPhones, it may be working on new technology to increase battery capacity for its next-generation smartphones.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities claims that Apple has been trying to find ways to increase the battery capacity as it’s going to introduce new 3D sensing and augmented reality features for the iPhone in 2019.

Apple is expected to continue expanding iPhone battery capacity in 2019 and 2020. Advancement in Apple’s key technologies which include systems-in-package, semiconductor manufacturing processes, and substrate-like printed circuit boards might allow the company to free up more space inside the handset for larger batteries.

On the battery technology front, some in the supply chain suggest that Apple will use flexible printed circuit board technology starting next year. Kuo claims that Apple will use rigid-flex printed circuit board batteries instead. That’s because flexible printed circuit board technology requires a hotbar or connector which takes up more space.

On the other hand, the power integrated circuit can be mounted on the rigid part of the rigid-flex printed circuit board using surface mount technology. This, according to the well-connected analyst, will result in a “superior battery.”

It’s unheard of for Apple to comment on supply chain rumors so we can’t expect any clarity on this from the company.
