The back and forth between Google and Amazon has become both entertaining and also frustrating for consumers. It is the common folk who get caught in between the clash of the titans and, at least for Amazon Echo Show and Fire TV users, that meant being deprived of the time-wasting joys of YouTube. While peace negotiations are supposedly on the … Continue reading

Recently benchmarks have confirmed, or at least lent more credence to the idea that Apple is slowing down older iPhones, and in a statement provided to TechCrunch from Apple, it seems that the Cupertino company has more or less confirmed that this is true, although it’s not necessarily for the nefarious, money-grabbing reasons some might think.
“Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.
Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.”
For those hearing about this for the first time, earlier this month a post on Reddit revealed a possible theory as to why older iPhones might feel like they’re getting slower. It was discovered that this is due to aging batteries, which Apple then released a software update that “smoothed it out”, resulting in phones “underperforming”.
It was theorized that if you were to swap out the old battery on your iPhone for a new one, your problems could be solved, or at least have the experience improved upon. The statement provided to TechCrunch seems to affirm that theory, but like we said, this doesn’t seem to have been done out of ill-intentions.
That being said, Primate Labs’ John Poole thinks that maybe Apple could have approached it a different way instead of having to wait until this point. According to Poole, “I think users who experience significant slowdowns due to battery wear would want Apple to be more transparent about this issue. A notification stating that the battery needs service would be a simple way to reduce users’ concerns and help them address this problem.”

As far as new Blizzard games are concerned, right now the only game that the company is confirmed to be working on is the Battle of Azeroth expansion for World of Warcraft, as well as the World of Warcraft Classic servers. However it is safe to assume that the company probably has more on their plate than they are officially letting on.
In fact a recent job listing spotted by ResetEra (via US Gamer) has revealed that Blizzard is seeking a software engineer specializing in vehicles for an unannounced game. “Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented gameplay engineer to help create vehicles and build vehicle handling features in a robust first-person engine for an unannounced project.”
“The ideal candidate has proven experience in vehicle handling, with exposure to other game systems like physics, animation, and cameras. They must have outstanding people skills and a longstanding passion for playing games across multiple genres and platforms.” Safe to say that the job description doesn’t really tell us what Blizzard could be working on, but given that it is a first-person game, this has led to speculation that it could be Overwatch-related.
Recently a Goldman Sachs analyst has predicted that Blizzard could release a sequel/expansion for Overwatch in 2020, so it is possible that the content is being worked on now. Alternatively like we said, it could possibly be for a new franchise, or maybe Blizzard could be thinking of turning Diablo 4 into an FPS-styled game. Either way we’ll probably have to wait and see.

Based on past Nikon releases for their professional DSLRs, we’ve seen the company release the Nikon D3, followed by the D3s, the D4, which was then followed by the D4s, and early last year we saw the company launch the D5. This means that assuming Nikon refreshes their professional lineup every 2 years or so, can we expect the Nikon D5s in 2018?
So far there hasn’t really been much rumors regarding the D5s, but recently a hashtag spotted on Instagram for the “#nikond5s” has fueled speculation that the camera is currently being tested in the field. The hashtag was spotted on the photos of Nikon Ambassador Ami Vitale which were shared on Instagram.
Sure, it could be a typo, but as Nikon Rumors points out, Vitale’s previous posts have been pretty accurate when it came to hashtagging, so it seems unlikely that she would have a typo not just on one photo, but on several. Other users in the comments have also pointed out that Vitale is one of the more highly regarded ambassadors of Nikon, meaning that if Nikon were looking for a photographer to field test the D5s, she would definitely be one of them.
In any case it is all just speculation at this point in time as Nikon has yet to officially confirm anything. However CES 2018 is around the corner so it could be announced then, or alternatively CP+ is another potential platform for Nikon to make the official announcement.

These days with more displays starting to support HDR, we’re also starting to see more content being released and optimized for such displays as well. The good news is that if you’re a Netflix user and are on Windows 10, Netflix has announced that it will now support HDR streaming on Windows 10 devices.
According to Netflix, “We are thrilled to announce the addition of High Dynamic Range (HDR) support on Windows 10 for both the Edge browser and the Netflix app. With this update, Netflix members who have a supported device and a premium plan can enjoy amazing Netflix movies and shows in HDR.”
Prior to this, Netflix already support 4K and HDR content, although it was limited to the Microsoft Xbox platform. For Netflix users on Windows 10 who really want to take advantage of this you’ll either have to stream content via the Edge browser or through the UWP app. That being said, it should be noted that most of the HDR content on Netflix is limited to the company’s original shows.
This means that if you watch a lot of Netflix’s original content then you will be able to take advantage of this, but if you tend to stream other shows more or from time to time, you might notice the differences, but hopefully it won’t be too obvious.

When Apple Music first launched, many were wondering about their existing libraries and how it could be tied into the service. However Apple said that users could upload their own music to the cloud and it would then match it against that of the catalog of Apple Music and be added to their library.
Songs that weren’t available would also be added and streamable from the cloud. This was more or less a basic feature that quite a few music streaming services offered their users, and it was also offered by Amazon Music, but unfortunately it looks like that has come to an end. According to a recent sighting by Slashgear (via TechCrunch), this new documentation was spotted on Amazon’s website.
According to Amazon, the changes have already taken place as of the 18th of December, 2017 where users will no longer be able to upload music via the Amazon Music desktop app. For users who have already uploaded to Amazon Music, those tracks will still be available until January.
“As of December 18, 2017, the ability to upload music will be removed from the Amazon Music for PC/Mac app. Music that is already uploaded can be played and downloaded until January 2019. See Downloading Your Music for more information on how to download.” According to an Amazon spokesperson, this only affects music imported by users from other sources, and that music purchased from Amazon will remain in the cloud.
