Apple’s App Store Guidelines Require Loot Box Odds To Be Disclosed

By now many of you guys have probably heard of the controversy surrounding loot boxes found in video games. The problem with such mechanics is that gamers don’t know what they’re going to get, or the odds of getting what they want, which has led to some calling the feature “gambling”.

Whether or not this is gambling is still up for debate, but it seems that Apple wants to steer clear of it and according to Touch Arcade, Apple has recently updated its App Store Review Guidelines where it now requires who implement loot boxes into their apps to disclose the odds of gamers getting what they want.

According to section 3.1.1, “Apps offering “loot boxes” or other mechanisms that provide randomized virtual items for purchase must disclose the odds of receiving each type of item to customers prior to purchase.” This shouldn’t really change anything in terms of mechanics, but for gamers who prefer to know whether or not their money will be wasted on something that has a 0.001% chance of spawning will probably go a long way.

Ultimately it could affect developers who might make less money from in-app purchases, but we guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Facebook Changes The Way ‘Fake News’ Articles Are Displayed

While satire and fake news aren’t exactly new, the rise of social media means that spreading misinformation around can be a lot quicker and could to complications, especially if people start believing everything they read. Facebook has done things to help combat fake news, such as flagging articles as being disputed.

However it seems that Facebook has decided that this isn’t the best way to go about it, and are now changing how fake news articles are being flagged and displayed. According to Facebook, one of the reasons there was an issue with the previous method was that despite flagging articles as being fake or disputed, there were too many steps involved for users to figure out why it was disputed.

They also discovered that sometimes flagging an article as disputed could actually further entrench a person’s belief. So what Facebook is doing now is by showing related articles that have been fact-checked. According to Facebook, “Academic research supports the idea that directly surfacing related stories to correct a post containing misinformation can significantly reduce misperceptions.”

Facebook also stated that they will send a notification to users when an article they’ve shared is disputed. Will this help reduce the number of fake news being posted and shared? Only time will tell, but these changes do sound pretty promising.

Walmart Looking To Launch Personal Shopping, Cashier-Free Stores

While Walmart and Amazon are both retailers, for a while they both managed to co-exist with each other. However both companies have since expanded their operations where Amazon has started to encroach upon other industries, and Walmart is launching services and features that attempt to match or beat Amazon.

Recently Amazon launched Amazon Go which allows customers to shop and checkout their items without having to line up at a cashier, and now it seems that Walmart is looking to do the same. According to a report from Recode, Walmart is apparently looking to test out cashier-free stores, where customers can fill up their shopping baskets or trollies and leave, with sensors scanning the items as they shop through the store, with the final sum being charged to their account at the end of it.

In addition to a cashier-free store, Recode is also reporting that Walmart is interested in introduce a personal shopping service which could focus on areas like health and beauty, household essentials, and accessories. Note that none of these features have been officially confirmed yet, so do take it with a grain of salt for now. Walmart has since declined to comment on the report.

That being said, this is actually not the first time that Walmart is exploring the idea of incorporating technology into their stores. Just a couple of months ago they started testing using robots to scan the shelves in their stores.

Two-factor, sometimes called two-step, authentication has become one of the favored methods of strengthening logins.
