Firefox For Amazon Fire TV Released
Posted in: Today's Chili
Amazon Fire TV users will now be able to browse the internet with Firefox. Mozilla today confirmed that Firefox for Amazon Fire TV has been released. It joins Amazon’s own Silk browser on these devices to enable users to browse the internet. Firefox and Silk browsers have now been released on all Fire TV devices in more than 100 countries across the globe.
With Firefox on the Fire TV, users can access the internet and browse popular websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit. They can access video sharing services, cloud photo services, news and sports websites, and more.
“Starting today, we will be able to expand the already great Fire TV experience by enabling viewers to surface a multitude of web content — including videos — through Firefox,” said Mark Mayo, Sr. Vice President of Firefox.
Amazon mentions in the press release that its Silk browser has been optimized for Fire TV. It offers a “true television viewing experience” with the intuitive controls being optimized for Fire TV devices.
Firefox doesn’t get similar praise in the press release but the app’s description reveals that it can be navigated using the Fire TV remote or app and that it lets users watch videos from YouTube and other popular sites.

It was a pretty big deal when Amazon finally resumed direct sales of the Apple TV earlier today. The company had stopped selling the set-top box two years ago due to “customer confusion.” Amazon started selling the Apple TV 4K, both 32GB and 64GB models, earlier today. The online retail giant has sold out of the set-top box merely hours after resuming direct sales of the Apple TV.
Amazon stopped selling competing streaming devices like the Apple TV and Chromecast on October 29th, 2015. It said that Amazon Prime Video compatibility was necessary for the company to sell these devices in order to avoid customer confusion.
Amazon didn’t release an app for the Apple TV after that so the set-top box remained off the retailer’s website. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos suggested in 2016 that Prime Video would not arrive on devices like the Apple TV until the companies agreed upon an amicable reimbursement model.
It was then announced by Apple CEO Tim Cook earlier this year at the WWDC 2017 that Amazon’s video streaming app will be released for the Apple TV in 2017. The app was released earlier this month.
Amazon then resumed direct sales of the Apple TV earlier today and it has already sold out of both models of the Apple TV 4K within hours. It may be a while before the set-top box is back in stock.

Tidal, the Jay-Z backed music streaming service that reportedly has six months of cash left, today released official apps for Apple TV and Android TV. Its subscribers will now be able to access the hi-fidelity music streaming service via the biggest screen in their home. The apps will enable subscribers to access the entire music library as well as Tidal’s collection of video content.
Tidal was launched several years ago with a unique proposition. It offered audiophile grade music at a price point that was greater than what its rivals charge. It also offers a tier that’s priced competitively, but the hi-fidelity option has been its unique selling point.
A recent report claimed that its unique selling point was causing troubles for the company. It was claimed that Tidal only has six months of working capital left. It would be unable to run its operations if the company doesn’t raise money.
However, Tidal was quick to refute the report, saying that it “experienced negative stories” since its launch and that it has done “nothing but grow the business each year.”
Tidal is moving forward with the launch of its official Apple TV and Android TV apps. The apps will let subscribers access the entire music library and video content which include livestreams, concerts, and music videos.
The app has been released today so Apple TV and Android TV owners can get their hands on it right away.

The Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ (2018) were recently announced by Samsung. They’re the first premium mid-range handsets from the company to feature the Infinity Display. This means that the handsets have on-screen navigation buttons since the Infinity Display mandates the removal of hardware buttons. Many would have expected the digital home button on the Galaxy A8 (2018) to be pressure sensitive like it is on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. It turns out that Samsung has skimped on the pressure sensitive home button for the new Galaxy A handsets.
Samsung introduced the Infinity Display earlier this year with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Since the flagship devices don’t have a conventional home button, Samsung made the transition easier by making the area around the digital home button pressure sensitive.
This made the software key feel like a real button. Users could change the pressure sensitivity and even choose to unlock the phone with a hard press of the button. The exact same functionality was offered on the Galaxy Note 8 as well.
Naturally, with the Infinity Display making it to the Galaxy A8 (2018), people would have expected that the new handsets’ software home button would be pressure sensitive as well. Turns out, it’s not.
This has been revealed in the Galaxy A8 (2018)’s user manual which doesn’t mention an option to hard press the home button. The only way that users can rely on the home button to wake up the device is by double tapping it when the Always On Display is enabled.
Those who don’t like to enable the Always On Display will just have to use the power button to wake up the device. They can also make use of the fingerprint sensor at the back to wake up the device.
Samsung has not made it clear why the Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ (2018)’s home button is not pressure sensitive. Perhaps it was a cost-saving measure or it just wanted to differentiate its mid-range handsets from the flagships.
Either way, this isn’t something that users will be too thrilled about.
