Samsung Launches Smaller And Faster DRAM Chip For PC

Samsung today announced the launch of its new DRAM chip for PC. It’s faster and smaller than its predecessor. The company says that it has now started mass producing the industry’s first 10nm class 8-gigabit DDR4 DRAM. The chip can be used in a wide range of computing systems. Samsung claims that it offers the highest performance and energy efficiency for an 8Gb DRAM chip.

Samsung launched the previous generation about a year and a half back. It says that the latest DRAM chip is 15 percent more power efficient and 10 percent faster than its predecessor.

The company also touts an approximate 30 percent productivity gain over its previous chip. What that means is that the production yields have increased which will enable the company to build more of these chips in the same time.

The new advanced proprietary circuit design enables the 8Gb DDR4 chip to operate at 3,600 megabits per second (Mbps) per pin. That’s a good improvement compared to 3,200 Mbps of the predecessor.

The company hasn’t relied on a new process to make the RAM smaller. It’s relying on new technology to make that happen. There’s more efficient error checking as well as a progressive “air spacer” scheme which enables a higher level of scaling and rapid cell operation.

Samsung has also said that it’s accelerating its plans for “much faster introductions” of next-generation DRAM chips and systems which include DDR5, HBM3, LPDDR5, and GDDR6.

Windows 10 Timeline Feature Now Available For Insiders

The Timeline continuity feature for Windows 10 was detailed by Microsoft earlier this year. The feature was supposed to be included in the Fall Creators Update but the company needed more time to polish it. Therefore, the feature’s release was delayed. It was confirmed last month that the Windows 10 Timeline feature would be available for Insiders soon. Members of the Insiders program can now start testing the Timeline feature.

The Timeline continuity feature will enable Windows 10 users to easily switch between multiple devices, even Android and iOS devices. Microsoft built a Timeline view into the Task View feature for Windows 10. It shows an overview of the apps running across Windows 10, iOS, and Android devices.

Users just need to visit the Tas View and resume what they were doing on another device. It can be going back to a particular website from another Windows 10 computer or putting the final touches to an email they started writing using the Outlook app on their iOS or Android smartphone.

Microsoft confirmed late last month that the Timeline feature would be included in the next Windows 10 build for Insider program members. The feature is now available to members on the Fast ring.

They should bear in mind that features released in Fast Ring previews are often more buggy so it shouldn’t surprise them if they run into any issues with the feature. Microsoft is yet to confirm when the Timeline feature is going to be released for everyone. It’s unlikely that it will happen before 2018.

Facebook Will Now List Security Emails To Combat Phishing

Phishing is perhaps the most common way that hackers trick people into divulging their private information online. A person with unauthorized access to your Facebook account can do a lot of damage in this day and age. Facebook has now decided to list all of the security emails it sends users in a bid to combat phishing. Users will be able to see the security emails that they’ve received from Facebook recently online. They can match them with the emails in their inbox to weed out those that might be phishing attempts.

Starting today, Facebook users will see an option to view “Recent emails about security and login” in their security settings.

The option is going to list the security emails and other emails that the particular user has received from Facebook. They will see the email address from which it was sent as well as the subject of the email.

Facebookmail.com is the common domain that Facebook users to send email notifications when it detects a log in or password change attempt.

If users are unsure about an email that claims to be from Facebook, they can check its legitimacy by visiting facebook.com/settings. If they check the tool and find that the email they received was fake, Facebook encourages users to report the email to phish@fb.com.

Pokemon Go Apple ARKit Update Might Be Out Soon

According to a new report, Niantic might release an update for Pokemon Go later today which will bring support for Apple’s ARKit feature. ARKit was introduced with iOS 11 earlier this year. It’s a new framework which enables developers to create powerful augmented reality experiences for iOS devices. The report suggests that this Pokemon Go update might be out as soon as later today.

The update will bring gameplay enhancements to Pokemon Go. Users won’t just see Pokemon floating vaguely above the ground. They will seem to be actually standing on real-world surfaces with natural lighting.

Niantic will offer an incentive for players to use the ARKit mode. They will get experience and Stardust points if they are able to sneak up close to the Pokemon slowly before capturing them. The capture circles will grow as they get closer to the Pokemon.

Niantic has previously claimed that the ARKit mode will be more power efficient compared to Pokemon Go’s original AR mode. This means that players should be able to get more out of their handset’s battery when playing Pokemon Go.

It won’t be a drastic improvement, though, given that the game relies on power-hungry components like the display, camera, GPS, cellular, and processor at the same time.

Pokemon Go players on iOS will need to have an iPhone 6s at the very least to take advantage of the ARKit functionality.

iOS and macOS universal app merge tipped for 2018

Apple will follow Microsoft in encouraging developers to build a single app that runs on both iOS and macOS, insiders claim, upending the current ecosystem in the name of cross-platform ubiquity. Currently, developers must choose between creating software intended for iOS devices, like iPhones and iPads, and macOS devices, like the MacBook Pro and iMac. However, one is clearly more … Continue reading
