Xperia XZ2 could still save Sony’s 2018 lineup

Some OEMs cast a wide net and hope they catch as many fish as they can. Or said in another way, they throw as many they can on a wall and hope at least one sticks. That is almost the strategy that Sony is employing for its smartphones, putting out nearly identical yet still distinct models each year, with some … Continue reading

The Morning After: Monday, December 18th 2017

Monday morning arrives, and as we gear up for the pre-holiday weekend (ignoring the five days left to go), we’re talking sell-out AirPods (really?), Firefox auto-installs (seriously), and we break down last week’s big events in numerical style in the…

New Alleged Samsung Galaxy S9 Renders Leaked

Last week thanks to renders that were based on factory CAD schematics, we have a rough idea of what the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9 could look like. Now thanks to more renders obtained and published by @OnLeaks, we have a clearer idea of what we will be able to expect from Samsung come 2018.

Right off the bat we suppose what’s obvious is that the Galaxy S9 will not differ too greatly in design compared to the Galaxy S8. This is in line with what we have been hearing, although some slight changes would be to thin out the lower bezel in which it will make the screen slightly bigger, but otherwise nothing will change.

It also appears that Samsung will be keeping the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, so for those hoping to see an in-display sensor, you might have to keep waiting. Also what’s interesting is that despite the Galaxy Note 8 featuring dual cameras on the back, the upcoming Galaxy S9 appears to maintain its single camera design.

We’re not sure why Samsung isn’t bringing dual cameras to the Galaxy S9, but if you were hoping for that you could be disappointed. Safe to say you should probably take this with a grain of salt for now, but if the rumors of a February launch are true, we won’t have to wait much longer for the official word.

Alleged Render Of The Sony Xperia XZ2 ‘Confirm’ All-Screen Design

We have been hearing rumors that for Sony’s next-gen flagship smartphone, they will be introducing a new design, one that will follow the trend of the phones we’re seeing these days, which is an all-screen design with minimal bezels. Now thanks to an image uploaded onto Slashleaks (via Techiestate), we might have an idea of what to expect.

For the most part it seems that Sony has somehow managed to retain its signature look, but as you can see and assuming the image is accurate, the bezels on the sides of the phone are considerably thinner, resulting in a phone with an edge-to-edge display. That being said, we can’t say for sure if this image is the real deal, so obviously take it with a grain of salt for now.

However according to Slashleaks, the handset in question is said to be the Sony Xperia XZ2, which is the successor to this year’s Sony Xperia XZ1. This is a high-end handset from Sony, which means that we can probably expect similar specs in its successor as well, presumably the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 as its chipset of choice, and if the current trend is anything to go on, 4-6GB of RAM.

We’re not sure if Sony plans on introducing a dual camera design, but we’ll have to wait and see. No word on when the handset will be announced, but CES and MWC 2018 are around the corner so perhaps we’ll learn more then.

‘Hey Google’ Hotword Rolling Out To More Users

If you wanted to activate voice search on Android, in the past the command would be “OK Google”. However when Google introduced the Google Home, the hotword became “Hey Google”, which created a bit of confusion as users might sometimes confuse between the two, especially if either device are in proximity of each other.

However the good news is that Google is finally unifying its commands. According to a report from Android Police, it appears that the “Hey Google” hotword is rolling out to Android users. What this means is that if you have an Android device, you can now choose to use “Hey Google” as your hotword of choice, meaning that you won’t have to juggle between “OK Google” or “Hey Google” moving forwards, although like we said, this could create some confusion if you have a Google Home and Android handset within earshot of each other.

However Android users will get to choose between the hotwords, so if you want you can still keep using “OK Google” to differentiate between devices. Note that Google began testing “Hey Google” for some Android users back in October, and we guess testing went fine as it is rolling out to more users now. If this is something you want to check out, then head on over to Settings > Google > Search > Voice to make the changes.

This Girl’s Boyfriend Challenged Her Father To A Game Of Guilty Gear

Trying to make a good impression with your partner’s parents can be tricky, and it is doubly important if your partner is someone you plan on being with for the long haul or marrying. However it seems that over in Japan, a rather interesting situation has happened, according to a series of tweets by @buppa_stone (via Siliconera).

According to the tweets, buppa_stone’s daughter’s boyfriend came over to their house for dinner one evening, and apparently both parties discovered their love for Guilty Gear, in which apparently the boyfriend then challenged the dad to a game. His tweet reads, “This kid seems to be challenging me to Guilty Gear, and I will punish him for it. I’m hiding in the toilet at the moment, but I am going to take him on. Also, he proves the theory that Slayer users are brats, I won’t forgive him.”

It turns out that buppa_stone is a real pro at Guilty Gear and ultimately beat his daughter’s boyfriend 10-6. “I’ve been playing since the first game, so I’m not losing to some middle schooler. (lol) I won, so he can’t be my girl’s boyfriend.” Unfortunately it seems that only he was the only one to be happy about his victory, as the rest of his family wasn’t so amused, where he was apparently kicked out of the house and left to find his own dinner.

Now we can’t be sure how authentic this story is or how accurate it is since it has been translated from Japanese to English, but it is still rather amusing anyway. Given that we’re seeing more gamers in this generation, we wouldn’t be surprised if more parents started challenging their children’s partners or even the kids themselves to video game matches in the future.

BBM Users Can Now Hail An Uber Within The App

On our smartphones, basically every app has its own purpose, which means that if you wanted to calculate something, you’d have to interrupt whatever you’re doing to pull up the calculator app. However we’ve started to see companies try to integrate more functions within their apps, like Google Maps and Uber.

However it looks like Uber’s integration isn’t ending with just Google Maps because BBM has announced that Uber will now be integrated into their app as well. What this means is that if you use BBM, you will be able to hail an Uber within the app itself as opposed to having to close the app and launch the Uber app.

According to BBM’s announcement on its blog, “With Uber on BBM, you and your friends can keep the conversation going while seamlessly requesting for an Uber ride in BBM. Taking your next ride is as simple as sending a message or a sticker!” However it should be noted that this feature seems to be limited to Indonesia for now, where the messenger app is still somewhat popular amongst the locals.

We’re not sure if there are plans to bring it to other markets, but given BBM’s decline in popularity over the years, especially in the West, it seems unlikely, but we’ll keep an eye out for it anyway just in case.
