Google Assistant on phones now offers a choice of hotwords

Google created a mild amount of confusion when it launched its Home speaker. You could say “hey, Google” to start a command with the living room device, but you still had to use the time-honored “OK, Google” on your Android phone. Needless to say,…

The Rodem Robotic Wheelchair Is Not Like The Others

When you think of robotic wheelchairs, you might think of wheelchairs that come with a control by its side that lets the user steer their chair to whatever direction they want, but for the most part despite how hi-tech a wheelchair can be, the way users sit in it has never really changed, at least until now.

Tmsuk has recently developed a wheelchair called the Rodem and as you can see in the video above, the way users sit on this wheelchair looks more like it is giving them a piggyback ride. It is a rather unconventional design, but apparently one that will make it easier for users to reach for things, versus if you were to sit back in a more conventionally-designed wheelchair.

The Rodem can also be controlled using a smartphone so that you can call it to you when you need. It also features a 9.3-mile range before needing to be recharged, and can go up to speeds of 3.7MPH, although it does have an 8 hour charge time which means that you will probably need to plan your day in advance lest you run out of juice halfway.

There are also some limitations to its use, where those who lack upper body mobility probably won’t have much use for it. The Rodem is currently available in Japan where it is priced at ¥980,000 (about $8,700), and is expected to eventually find its way to the UK in 2018.

Rainbrow Is An iPhone X Game That Leverages The TrueDepth Camera

In order for Face ID to work on the iPhone X, Apple had to create a pretty complex setup that they are calling TrueDepth, which is basically an array of cameras and sensors that effectively help to map the user’s face properly in order to authenticate them. This is also used in the Animoji feature, but now it looks we have another use for the TrueDepth system.

Developed by Washington University computer science graduate Nathan Gitter, he has created a game for the iPhone X called Rainbrow which basically uses the TrueDepth camera to play. How it works is that gamers will use their eyebrows to move an emoji face up and down the screen to collect stars, while avoiding other emojis.

As you can see in the video above, raising one’s eyebrows will move the emoji upwards, while keeping their face neutral will maintain their position, and furrowing your brows will make your emoji character jump down. We reckon it will probably be a rather tiring game and wouldn’t be surprised if you walked away with some muscle cramps, but at the same time it is a pretty clever idea and a great way to leverage the TrueDepth system.

Rainbrow is not the first app to use the TrueDepth system and ARKit. Previously we have seen a glasses maker use the system to help recommend frames for its users.

Nintendo Says Switch Sales Are ‘Unprecedented’ For The Company

The Nintendo Switch is less than a year old, but last we heard, Nintendo was boasting that the console had managed to sell 10 million units worldwide, putting it well on track to beating the Wii U’s lifetime sales within a year. In fact the Switch’s success seems to be something that even Nintendo could not have predicted.

Speaking to CNN Tech, Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aime was quoted as saying how it was “unprecedented” for the company. According to Fils-Aime, “The fact that we reached 10 million units sold on a global basis and we’re not fully through the holidays is unprecedented territory for Nintendo. The pace is one of the fastest in our own history and in gaming history.”

He also credited the console’s success to its portability which allows gamers to play it on the go (or docked at home), and also its lineup of games, where titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been rated as one of the best games of 2017. Super Mario Odyssey has also since been received extremely positively, selling as many as 2 million copies within 3 days of its release.

P.J. McNealy, CEO of Digital World Research also believes that the launch of the Switch was done at the right time, helping it to gain ground in an already competitive market. “The Switch is in a position to become the second console in households. The PS4 and Xbox One are in year four, while the Switch is a new console with great first-party titles. Nintendo’s strategy coming in was to load up on [games], such as Mario and Zelda, which help carry hardware sales for several holidays. The company nailed it this year.”

Researchers In Japan Develop Glass That Can Heal Itself

Smartphones with broken/cracked displays is probably one of the more common accidents that happen, although smartphone makers have been trying to make up for it by using glass that is sturdier and less prone to cracking. However despite their best attempts, cracks still happen, but that could change in the future thanks to researchers in Japan.

Developed by Professor Takuzo Aida and his team at the University of Japan, these researchers have developed a glass that can actually heal itself. The concept of glass healing itself isn’t exactly new, but this development does sound like it has quite a bit of promise. The substance created is called “polyether thiourea” and it features the hardness of glass, with the difference being that when pressed together and having pressure applied on it, after a new moments it will “heal” and will be like new again.

So far what we’ve seen in terms of self-healing materials is that for the most part, they can only heal superficial scratches, meaning that anything deeper and you can forget about it. From what we can tell about this “polyether thiourea”, it seems that it works with completely broken pieces, so in the event that your screen shatters into pieces, pressing it together will put it back.

This discovery came about when the researchers were attempting to develop a new type of adhesive. That being said, we’re not sure if there are plans to commercialize this material, but so far it looks pretty promising with a bunch of potential applications.

ARMS 5.0 Update Expected By End Of Year With New Character

When Nintendo first launched ARMS, the game came with a decently-sized roster, although with subsequent updates released, Nintendo has introduced a bunch of new characters to the game, with the latest release coming just last month. However it looks like Nintendo isn’t quite done with their updates yet.

In a tweet by the Nintendo of Europe account, it looks like Nintendo has a new update in the works that will bump the game up to version 5.0. As you can see in the trailer video above, this update will introduce a new mystery character, although it’s hard to tell who this character is based on the teaser, although some in the comments are claiming that it is Springtron’s creator (the character was introduced last month).

Either way we should find out soon enough because the tweet has stated that the update will be released by the end of the year, and given that we’re in the third week of December, it shouldn’t be too long and should arrive in time for the holidays, so if you’re looking for some time to kill during the holidays and catch up on some gaming, then this update could be worth looking forward to.

It is unclear if there will be any other changes made to the game apart from the addition of the new character, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.

Apple’s AirPods Have Been Sold Out Until January 2018

If you were hoping to get someone a pair of AirPods in time for Christmas, it looks like you’d be be out of luck because according to reports, Apple’s AirPods have been sold out until January 2018 via the official Apple Online Store. This means that you’ll have to go through a third-party retailer to get your hands on it, assuming others haven’t thought about that already.

Now if you thought that maybe you could try your luck at a brick-and-mortar Apple Store, it seems that the reports are also claiming that for the most part, the AirPods have also sold out in most retail stores around the world. You could try your luck or maybe give the stores a call before you go.

MacRumors even points out that even third-party retailers such Best Buy and Macy’s are sold out of the headphones, but for those who absolutely want it, AT&T appears to have some in stock but customers will have to pay an extra $15 for express delivery if they’re hoping to get it in time for Christmas.

It seems that despite initial skepticism about the design and price of the AirPods that they seem to be really well-received. Some are even claiming that the AirPods are dominating the wireless headphone market as a result.

Tesla Introduces ‘Fair Use’ Policy For Its Supercharger Network

Tesla’s Supercharger network has been designed to help electric cars recharge so that when they go on long journeys, they won’t have to worry about running out of battery in the middle of the highway, assuming they’ve been stopping and recharging when necessary. However what the company doesn’t want to do is for commercial cars to hog its network.

The company has recently introduced a new “fair use” policy for its Supercharger network, where cars used for commercial purposes are discouraged from using it. Tesla has defined commercial cars as electric cars used as a taxi, for ridesourcing or ridesharing (like Uber, Lyft, etc.), for commercial deliveries, for government purposes, or for any other commercial venture.

However the good news is that this only applies to new or used Tesla cars that have been purchased after today, which means that existing fleets such as those used by Tesloop will have no problems using the network. This new policy comes after quite a few Tesla owners complained about commercial services that hogged the Superchargers, with some even leaving the vehicles overnight and taking up spaces that others could use.

That being said, Tesla did state that they have plans to offer an alternative to the Supercharger network for commercial vehicles in the future.
