Vivo Will Be First To Use Synaptics’ In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Last week Synaptics announced that they have begun mass producing its in-display fingerprint sensor, and that a “top 5” smartphone maker would be using their tech. The company did not name names, naturally, but this led to speculation that it could be Samsung given the company’s interest in the tech.

However as it turns out, Samsung might not be the company that Synaptics was hinting at. In a report from Forbes, it seems that Vivo will actually be the first company that will be taking advantage of the new sensor. This is according to the report’s author Patrick Moorhead who had a hands-on experience with a pre-production Vivo handset.

According to Moorhead, it seems that it was a pretty positive experience. “The Clear ID experience was fast and simple- I pressed the right side button to wake, a fingerprint image illuminated at the bottom of the phone, I touched it, and it let me in.” He also expects that Vivo will further improve upon it ahead of its release.

While it is still possible that Samsung could be looking to use the tech as well, note that we have seen some alleged renders of the upcoming Galaxy S9 and from what we can tell, Samsung will still be keeping the fingerprint sensor at the back, suggesting that maybe in-display sensors won’t be arriving for the handset just yet.

Google Assistant Can Give Directions Based On Your Method Of Commute

Google Maps can give users directions based on their method of commute. Since walking, cycling, public transport, and driving all use different roads (it wouldn’t be advisable to walk along the highway, or it wouldn’t be efficient to use the same route that a bus might take), Google Maps gives users those options when trying to map out a route for users.

The good news is that if you use Google Assistant for getting directions, you’ll be pleased to learn that Google has recently rolled out a new settings option for Assistant that will help make it easier. With these settings, users can choose a default method of commute, such as driving, taking public transport, walking, or by bike.

Based on this, Assistant will default to using that method of commute when giving you directions. There are also two different settings, where one can be used for work, and the other for other directions. For example if you typically take public transport to work/school but drive on the weekends, you can differentiate those and Assistant will swap between depending on the directions you ask for.

This feature appears to have been enabled server-side, meaning that no action will be required from the user, so fire up the Assistant settings if this is something you want to set for future trips.

Instagram Rolls Out New Festive Tools For The Holidays

With the holidays coming up on us, it looks like Instagram is in the mood for some celebration as the company has announced that they will be rolling out a bunch of creative tools to help celebrate the holidays. This comes in the form of new Super Zoom effects, new Face Filters, Stickers, and Color filters.

With the new Super Zoom effects, users will be able to choose from more sound effects, such as Bounce, Beats, or TV Show. As for Face Filters, this is where it gets interesting. “You’ll see three new face filters to get into the festive spirit — celebrate the occasion with balloons bursting with confetti, try out different holiday makeup looks or even draw a heart in snow-frosted glass for a friend.”

There will also be new stickers that users can use to adorn their Stories with, such as a cup of hot chocolate with floating marshmallows, a pair of knitted gloves, a snowman, and more. There will also be new Color filters which appear to be available only to iOS. “If you have an iPhone, you’ll also see an updated set of color filters in the camera. Simply tap the camera icon in the top left of the screen or swipe right from anywhere in feed. Once you’ve captured your moment, swipe left or right to discover different color filters then tap ‘next’ to add to your story or send to friends directly.”

The updates should be live, or should be in the process of rolling out so do keep an eye out for them.

Grammarly Keyboard Now Available For Android Devices

Last month Grammarly rolled out its keyboard for iOS devices, and for Android users who were looking forward to using it as well, the good news is that Grammarly’s keyboard app is now available on Android as well and can be downloaded for free via the Google Play Store if that’s something you’re interested in.

For those unfamiliar with Grammarly, it is basically an online service that helps you check your grammar and corrects any mistakes it might find. Grammarly later decided to take its features and put it into a smartphone keyboard, which means that fixing your grammatical mistakes will be a lot easier.

According to the company, they’ve described the keyboard as “a personal editor that integrates seamlessly with all your mobile apps and your mobile browser. Whether you’re responding to an important client’s email, posting a Facebook message for the world to see, or texting your boss, you’ll always look polished and professional, even on your phone.”

Whether or not you will find this useful is up to you, but if you’re hoping to avoid embarrassing tweets, emails, or blog posts that are grammatically incorrect, especially when it comes to a professional setting like at work, then perhaps it could be worth checking out.

2018 Battlefield Game Won’t Be Bad Company 3

It was reported recently that the 2018 Battlefield game is going to be Bad Company 3. The assumption came from a YouTube video which suggested that Bad Company 3 is going to be the new Battlefield title that comes out next year. The video provided purported details about the next title which are now reportedly said to be not true.

Eurogamer hears that while an idea for Battlefield Bad Company 3 existed, it’s not in development. The video had suggested that the game would have a “mid and post-Vietnam conflict” with game modes like Conquest, Operations, Rush, and Team Deathmatch.

There would also have been era-appropriate guns, tighter maps, character classes like Assault, Recon, Engineer, and Support as well as LAVs, modern tanks, helicopters, and more.

There have been plenty of rumors about Bad Company 3 but they have been shot down in the latest report. DICE Sweden is reportedly working on the next Battlefield title and it’s expected to be set in the second World War.

That won’t be surprising at all, given that the current Battlefield game has been very well received with its World War 1 setting receiving a lot of praise.

There’s no official confirmation about any of this from the studio or the publisher and that’s not surprising, we still have a few months to go before an official announcement becomes due.

Facebook Will Promote Video More Prominently Inside News Feed

Facebook has gradually positioned video as a big part of the social network’s user experience and the company has now said that it’s going to promote videos more prominently inside News Feed. This means that it’s going to use the core Facebook feature to push its video offerings in order to compete more effectively with the likes of YouTube.

The News Feed is the first thing that Facebook’s 2.1 billion users see when they access the website or launch the app. Leveraging the immense reach of the News Feed will enable Facebook to really push its video offerings to its users.

Facebook users are now more likely to see videos in News Feed that the social network thinks they might be interested in. The videos will also be based on their search history and the pages they have liked. They will also see new episodes of a show if they’ve watched a previous episode.

“Engaging one-off videos that bring friends and communities together have always done well in News Feed and will continue to do so,” Facebook said.

The company also revealed recently that it’s going to start testing pre-roll ads in its Watch service. The ads will be displayed before the videos begin. Facebook’s Watch service was launched earlier this year. It currently hosts video content from partners but will eventually feature original content as well.
