BMW Spending $118 Million On A Track For Self-Driving Cars

BMW is really digging deep into its pockets to keep up with the rapid changes in the automotive industry. The company recently revealed that it’s going to invest $240 million to build more efficient electric car batteries. The company has now said that it’s spending $118 million to build a test track for its self-driving and electric cars. The track is going to be located in the Czech Republic.

The track in the Czech Republic is going to be BMW’s first vehicle testing project in eastern Europe. The track will span 1,200 acres and it’s going to be a proving ground for the company’s autonomous cars. The development work is going to pick up steam at the start of the next decade, the company has confirmed.

The company already has testing facilities near its Munich headquarters as well as in France and in Sweden. However, they’re no longer sufficient to accommodate its expanding tests of autonomous cars.

BMW is aiming to launch its highly automated iNEXT model in 2021. It’s working with the likes of Intel, Delphi, and Mobileye to further its work on driverless cars. BMW is also planning to offer as many as 25 battery-powered vehicles by 2025. It plans on making half of them fully electric.

Xiaomi Reportedly Developing Snapdragon-Powered Windows 10 PC

It was confirmed late last year that Windows 10 PCs powered by the next-generation Snapdragon chip will be released in 2017. HP and ASUS are two major manufacturers who are developing Windows 10-powered PCs touting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor. Lenovo is said to be working on a Snapdragon 835-powered PC itself as well. If a new report is to be believed, Xiaomi is working on something similar.

There isn’t a lot of information available about this new Xiaomi notebook at this point in time. It can reasonably be assumed that it’s going to be light, thin, and possibly fanless. It may also offer instant-on functionality, long battery life, and support for 4G LTE.

Chinese OEM Xiaomi started selling laptops not too long ago and its thin and light PCs have received a good response from the market. It has only launched models powered by Intel processors so far.

It has traditionally undercut its competitors on price and that’s what the company is expected to do with its Snapdragon-powered PCs as well.

Xiaomi is yet to confirm if and when this Windows 10 PC running a Snapdragon chip is going to be unveiled. With the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 just around the corner, it’s possible that we might see the machine being unveiled in Las Vegas next month.

Pixel 2 XL Fingerprint Sensor Issues Reported After Android 8.1 Update

It hasn’t been long since Google started rolling out Android 8.1 for the Pixel and Nexus devices. It seems that there are still a couple of bugs that should have been addressed before the firmware was sent out the door. Some Pixel 2 XL owners have taken to Google’s official support forum to complain about a slowdown in the performance of the handset’s fingerprint sensor after updating it to Android 8.1.

It was also reported earlier this week that some Pixel owners were reporting multi-touch issues after updating their handsets to Android 8.1. No new update has since been rolled out to address those issues and now we’re hearing about speed issues with the Pixel 2 XL’s fingerprint sensor.

Many Pixel 2 XL owners have complained on the official forum about the slowdown in the fingerprint sensor’s performance after updating to Android 8.1 compared to Android 8.0. It’s unclear what’s causing this but it could be a bug in the software.

A temporary fix that some users have discovered involves turning on the handset’s always on display. This feature does tend to take up battery life so those who don’t want to spend their battery life on this feature should sit tight as it shouldn’t be long before a fix arrives.

A Google representative on the support forum has confirmed that the team knows about the issue and that it will be reaching out to affected users to obtain bug reports so they can isolate the issue and fix it.

Mozilla Takes Flak For Sneaking In Mr Robot Firefox Plugin

Many Firefox Quantum users were taken by surprise yesterday when they found a strange new plugin listed in their browsers. The plugin was called Looking Glass and even though it was disabled by default, users weren’t pleased to see a plugin they knew nothing about pop up out of nowhere. While Mozilla has since offered an explanation, it has understandably taken a lot of flak from users for sneaking in a Firefox plugin.

The description of the Looking Glass plugin didn’t do much to address users’ concerns, it just said “MY REALITY IS JUST DIFFERENT THAN YOURS.”

Users took to the official support forum to inquire more about the mysterious plugin. Some couldn’t find any references to it online which only added to their suspicions.

The plugin was actually part of Mr Robot’s alternative reality game. It’s a trail of clues that the writers have left for the fans to discover. The plugin was developed as a “shared experience to further your immersion into the Mr Robot universe,” says Mozilla.

Once the plugin was enabled, it made minor changes to select websites which provided players of the game with more clues. It may have been developed with good intentions but many Firefox users criticized Mozilla for distributing a plugin without their permission.

The company has since moved the plugin to Firefox’s public add-on store and has also made its code available in a public repository. It also said in a statement that the plugin “never collected any data, and had to be explicitly enabled by users playing the game before it would affect any web content.”
