Big news was made last week when it was announced that Disney plans to buy almost all of 21st Century Fox for a whopping $54 billion. While it’s interesting to think of iconic properties like The Simpsons joining Star Wars in House of Mouse, and Marvel fans are likely excited at the potential for the X-Men and Deadpool to finally … Continue reading
After Math: When you come undone
Posted in: Today's ChiliOh hey, what a surprise, the guy who joked just last week about how he was a “puppet FCC Chairman” in front of his former Verizon bosses just so happened to spearhead a campaign to roll back Net Neutrality protections — something Verizon has long lo…
It has been over two years since BlackBerry shipped a handset running its own operating system. The last BB10 OS-powered handset was released in 2015. The company has since been making Android-powered devices and it won’t be going back to its own OS again. Those who still own a BB10 OS device would be interested in finding out that BlackBerry has decided to shut down the BlackBerry World app store in December 2019.
BlackBerry has confirmed, though, that it will continue to provide software support for BB10 and BBOS devices for at least another two years.
Some ancillary services will be shut down in the meantime. The BlackBerry Travel site will bite the dust in February next year while the Playbook video calling service will be shut down in March 2018.
The BlackBerry World app store is going to be shut down on December 31st, 2019. This means that when 2020 comes around, those who own a BB10 or BBOS handset will have no official way of installing an app on their handsets.
BlackBerry is calling on the holdouts to upgrade to a new Android-powered device from BlackBerry Mobile. These include the BlackBerry Motion and the BlackBerry KeyOne.
The company has said that it’s working with BlackBerry Mobile to offer holdouts a trade-up program that will provide them with a “significant discount” to get them to upgrade their current BlackBerry device to a new Android-powered one.

Bitcoin is all the rage these days. The cryptocurrency’s value has surged significantly over the past couple of weeks and it shows no signs of slowing down. People have even started asking for bitcoin in exchange for their apartments now so it’s not surprising to see that a company in Japan has started paying its employees in bitcoin.
GMO Internet, which runs several web-related businesses in Japan, has said that it’s going to pay part of its employees’ salaries in bitcoin. The company believes that this move will help it achieve a better understanding of the virtual currency.
The company’s internet-related businesses include online advertising, finance, and internet infrastructure. It also started a bitcoin trading and exchange business in May this year.
GMO Internet is going to start paying up to 100,000 yen or $890 monthly to its employees in Japan by bitcoin starting in February next year.
Employees can decide if they want to opt-in to receive part of their salaries in bitcoin. “Employees can receive salaries by Bitcoin if they want to,” said company spokeswoman Harumi Ishii, adding that “We hope to improve our own literacy of virtual currency by actually using it.”
More than 4,000 employees of the company will be able to decide whether or not they want to receive part of their salaries in bitcoin.

The Mobile World Congress 2018 is going to take place in February next year. Many companies use the MWC stage to unveil their new handsets. Huawei is expected to unveil its new flagship at the convention next year. It’s expected that the Huawei P11 is going to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in February.
A Huawei executive had said earlier this year that the P10’s successor will likely be unveiled at next year’s Mobile World Congress. Bruce Lee, Huawei’s Vice President of Handsets Product Line, said this earlier this year in March.
According to a new report, company representatives have reiterated at a local German Huawei Christmas event that the Huawei P11 is going to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2018.
The representatives also said that Huawei is going to release “exciting new products” in Q1 2018 that will focus particularly on camera performance and artificial intelligence.
This ties in nicely with previous expectations that the handset is going to be launched at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona.
It really won’t be surprising if the Huawei P11 is unveiled at MWC 2018 given that its predecessor, the Huawei P10, was launched at MWC 2017 this year.
No information about pricing and availability has surfaced as yet but we can expect to hear whispers about them in the coming weeks.

Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to unveil the Galaxy S9. The existing flagship, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, were unveiled earlier this year at a special event in New York City. Samsung pulled out all the stops as these handsets were its first flagship smartphones following the Galaxy Note 7 debacle last year. According to a new report, the Galaxy S9 might be launched a month ahead of its predecessor next year.
Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that Samsung is planning to introduce the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ by late February. It’s also aiming to release the handsets by March.
This would give it a month’s lead over the Galaxy S8 which was unveiled at the end of March this year and released in mid-April. The scribe does add that the release plans for the new models “are still fluid” and there’s a possibility that they might change.
Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything about the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at this point in time. Perhaps it’s moving up the launch of its new flagship smartphones to bring a brand new iPhone X challenger into the market.
The end of February timeframe suggests that Samsung might unveil the Galaxy S9 at the Mobile World Congress 2018. It has used this stage in the past to unveil new handsets so it’s not entirely impossible for the handset to be launched in Barcelona come February.

Jigsaw CatchAll Docking Station is the Perfect Place to Keep All Your Bedside Stuff
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you’re like me, you’ve got all kinds of crap sitting on your bedside table – a phone, watch, charging cables, and other miscellaneous stuff. I always find myself reaching over in the middle of the night to check the time on my phone or watch too, and there’s usually a bunch of fumbling around in the dark. What I need is a nice way to organize all of that stuff.
Look no further than Jigsaw Furnishing’s CatchAll bedside docks. Each of their docks is made from two pieces of custom cut, high quality plywood that interlock, and provides places to dock your phone, hang your watch, hold a wallet, keys, jewelry, spare change, and a pen. I’m sure you could figure out other uses for it as well.
If you’ve got an Apple Watch, they make a special version with a cutout for its magnetic charging cable too. I definitely need that one.
Best of all, Jigsaw’s docks are reasonably priced, going for just $29.99 each. You can find them for sale over on their Etsy shop now.
Terry Zwigoff’s claim comes after a similar allegation made this week by “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson.
