As you might have heard, Google and Amazon can’t seem to see eye-to-eye at the moment, with Google yanking YouTube from the Echo Show and Fire TV. despite it being available just last month. On the flip side it seems that Amazon has decided to play nice by putting the Google Chrome (and Apple TV) back up for sale on its platform.
So what about YouTube? The good news is that according to The Verge, a Google spokesperson has told the publication that both Google and Amazon are currently in “productive discussions” about YouTube, and that they hope that they can come to “an agreement for the benefit of our mutual customers.”
Prior to this, Google’s reason for pulling YouTube was due to a “lack of reciprocity”, where they stated that because Amazon doesn’t carry Google products, they didn’t see the need to return the favor. However like we said, Amazon has recently started to offer the Chromecast, so perhaps this will be a step in the right direction.
As it stands there is no “winner” in this as ultimately customers are the ones who suffer. Exactly when YouTube will return to the Echo Show and Fire TV remains to be seen, but hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

Everybody loves a good deal, especially when it comes to travelling because unless you’re swimming in cash, being able to save money on things like the flight and hotel can go a long way in allowing you to use that savings for when you reach your destination, and this is something that Google wants to help you with.
Not content with just being able to list flight and hotel prices, Google has announced a couple of new features that they’ll be introducing to their Flights and Trips hotel searches, such as machine learning that studies historical data According to Google, “Using machine learning and statistical analysis of historical flights data, Flights displays tips under your search results, and you can scroll through them to figure out when it’s best to book flights.”
Hotel searches will also be affected similarly, where the system will know if there is an event going on in the area that could affect the prices of hotels. “Similarly, when you search for a hotel on Google, a new tip will appear above results when room rates are higher than usual, or if the area is busier than usual due to a holiday, music festival, or even a business conference.”
For those who want to travel and do not have any particular set dates in mind, they can then opt into Hotel Price Tracking on their phones (and desktops later). This will see Google send users an email alert for when prices of hotels drop so that they can book without potentially missing out on a deal.

For those who are old enough to remember, back in the early days of the internet before the likes of Skype, WhatsApp, LINE, Viber, WeChat, and Snapchat, there existed other instant messenger platforms like IRC, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, and of course one of the classics, AIM, which in case you’ve forgotten, has shut down today.
It was reported back in October that AIM would be shutting its doors on the 15th of December, 2017, and sure enough it has. The service has been in operation for about 20 years now, and we guess all good things do eventually come to an end. According to the announcement, “As of December 15, 2017, AOL Instant Messenger products and services will be shut down and will no longer work.If you are an AOL member, AOL products and services like AOL Mail, AOL Desktop Gold and Member Subscriptions will not be affected.”
For those wondering if there could be a potential replacement for the app/service, that will not be the case because according to AOL, “There is not currently a replacement product available for AIM. As we move forward, all of us at AOL (now Oath) are excited to continue bringing you new, iconic products and experiences.”
It is an end of an era, but like we said with today’s landscape being peppered with a myriad of messenger apps, users are already spoilt for choice.

If there is one thing that BlackBerry is known for, apart from creating keyboard phones, is their security. At one point in time the company was used by businesses and governments due to their security features, which was also brought over to consumer devices. Unfortunately for BlackBerry PRIV users, those security features are coming to an end.
In an update on BlackBerry’s website, the company has announced that they will be stopping the monthly security updates that have been released to the phone. To be fair, BlackBerry did promise that they would deliver 2 years worth of monthly security updates, and they have fulfilled their end of the deal, although we’re sure that many users would have preferred if they kept at it.
However this doesn’t mean that they’ll stop supporting the phone entirely. The company states that should critical vulnerabilities popup, they will be addressed. They also state that they will be fulfill all warranty obligations, and they will also be introducing a trade-up program, where users of the PRIV can upgrade themselves to the KeyOne or Motion.
BlackBerry also highlights how when they built their phones, they also tweaked Android to ensure that certain features in the OS would be secured against attacks, so despite not having monthly updates, they believe that they have laid the foundation for a secure device, which we suppose should be rather comforting knowledge.

Last year the Lenovo Phab 2 was launched, and while Lenovo launching a new phone wouldn’t have raised too many eyebrows, what made the Phab 2 different is that it is the world’s first Project Tango smartphone. For those unfamiliar, Project Tango is basically Google’s take on augmented reality (AR) technology, and unfortunately it looks like that particular project is coming to an end.
In a tweet by the Project Tango Twitter account (via ArsTechnica), Google has announced that Project Tango will be shutting down on the 1st of March, 2018. “We’re turning down support for Tango on March 1, 2018. Thank you to our incredible community of developers who made such progress with Tango over the last three years.”

However this does not mean that Google isn’t pursuing AR tech anymore. Instead it’s more like Project Tango represents Google’s first attempt at AR, and now that they’re moving on to their next project, which is ARCore, which apparently will be more accessible compared to Tango and is expected to find its way onto phones made by the likes of Samsung, LG, Huawei, ASUS, and more.
So far Google has been testing the waters with ARCore through the release of AR Stickers, which is a mode for the Pixel’s cameras that allow users to introduce characters into your camera scenes that can match lighting to look like they’re really there, which you check out for yourself in the video above.
