Samsung’s Smart Speaker Reportedly Planned For First Half Of 2018

Following the successful launch of the Amazon Echo, it really wasn’t surprising to see many companies follow suit with their own offerings, like the Google Home and the Apple HomePod. It also did not come as a surprise to learn that Samsung might have something up their sleeves as well.

However despite hearing about the speakers for a while now, there is still no specific release date in sight or an official announcement, but according to a report from Bloomberg, apparently Samsung is targeting the first half of 2018 to launch the device. Details are scarce, but for the most part it sounds like it’ll be like most smart speakers where it will feature a built-in digital assistant (presumably Bixby) that can help users control their connected devices, like lights and locks.

The report is also claiming that the device will have an emphasis on audio quality, which we suppose is largely thanks to Samsung’s acquisition of Harman International. We have no idea what the speaker might look like, but Samsung has launched speaker products in the past, so perhaps those could be used as a frame of reference.

In any case we’ll have to wait and see what Samsung might have planned for us. Perhaps the announcement of the speaker could be made alongside the upcoming Galaxy S9.

Alibaba Wants To Sell Cars Through A Vending Machine

Vending machines are typically used to purchase things like drinks and snacks, but if you’ve ever been to Japan, then you know that the country’s vending machine game is next level. For example you can buy things like fruits, eggs, SIM cards, umbrellas, and more, so why not cars, right?

Wait, what? Yup, it seems that over in China, e-commerce giant Alibaba has proposed an idea in which one could potentially test drive and buy a car via a vending machine. As you can see in the video above, the concept of the vending machine is roughly similar to those automated multi-story carparks, but instead of using it to park cars, you can use it to select the cars you want to test and buy.

Naturally this leads to questions about the potential abuse of such a system, where people can just choose and car and drive off with it. However according to Alibaba, there will be some security measures in place to prevent that. For starters customers who want to test the cars will need to have a certain credit score via Alibaba’s own Zhima service, and also be Alibaba Super Members.

Also customers will be limited to five test drives every two months, with each test drive allowing drivers to test it for a maximum of three days. Customers can then choose to purchase the car outright using Taobao or arrange to test a different model. At the moment there are only plans to open two such “stores”, one in Shanghai and the other in Nanjing, with plans to eventually open more at a later date.

iMac Pro’s RAM Can Only Be Upgraded By Apple, Authorized Service Provider

More often than not, it is usually cheaper to upgrade your computer yourself by purchasing parts from outside rather than directly from your computer maker. The only downside is that it isn’t covered by your warranty (and might void your warranty) and you’ll have to do it yourself, which can be daunting for users who aren’t familiar with the process.

Unfortunately for those planning on buying the soon-to-be-released iMac Pro, upgrading the computer’s RAM will no longer be possible to DIY and you will either have to take it to Apple or an authorized service provider if you’re looking for an upgrade, as confirmed by iMore’s Rene Richie. This is because unlike the regular iMac which features a rear hatch that allows users to install their own RAM modules by themselves, the iMac Pro lacks the hatch.

While we suppose you could dismantle the iMac Pro yourself if you have the necessary tools, like we said, doing so would most certainly void the warranty and that any damage to the computer and its components will be entirely on you. Given how much the iMac Pro costs, we’re not sure if that is a risk many are willing to take.

As it stands, the iMac Pro comes with 32GB of RAM by default, and an increase to 64GB will cost customers an additional $800, while 128GB of RAM will cost a whopping $2,400.

Facebook To Introduce Pre-Roll Ads For ‘Watch’ Videos

In recent times we’re starting to see Facebook introduce ads in its videos, where sometimes when you watch a video halfway, an ad will appear. So far the ads only appear mid-way through the video and never at the start, but apparently this is something that Facebook wants to change as they have announced plans for pre-roll ads.

What this means is that in the future, ads will begin playing at the start of the video versus in the middle. Now before you guys get too worked up over this, note that this change only applies to videos under the “Watch” tab. According to Facebook, “Next year, we will begin testing pre-roll ads in places where people proactively seek out content, like Watch.”

The reason for putting ads in the front versus the middle for videos under the “Watch” tab is because Facebook thinks our intentions are different when watching a video in our News Feed, versus going to the “Watch” tab. “While pre-roll ads don’t work well in News Feed, we think they will work well in Watch because it’s a place where people visit and come back to with the intention to watch videos.”

Basically Facebook thinks that because we purposely click the “Watch” tab, that we wouldn’t mind sitting through a pre-roll ad before the video starts, kind of like how it is in the movies where the ads play before the movie starts. Note that Facebook is only testing out the feature for now, so whether or not it’ll become an actual feature remains to be seen.

Google confirms Amazon talks about keeping YouTube on Fire TV

The clock is ticking toward January 1, 2018, at which point Google will prevent Fire TV devices from accessing YouTube. The decision to block access was announced days ago, and underscoring it was a sharp, immediate action from Google: it took away Echo Show’s access to YouTube altogether. Fire TV owners may not lose access, though, if “productive discussions” between … Continue reading

BEAM Authentic has taken the wraps off what it calls a “smart button” by the same name. New Alleged Samsung Galaxy S9 Render Shows Off The Phone’s Design

If you’re wondering what the Samsung Galaxy S9 could look like, you’ll be interested to learn that a recent render of the phone has found its way online, courtesy of the folks at 91mobiles and @OnLeaks, which apparently are based on factory CAD renders. Whether or not the CAD renders were real remains to be seen, but for the most part the render above lines up with what we’ve been hearing so far.

According to recent rumors, the Galaxy S9’s design is said to not differ too greatly from the Galaxy S8, save for maybe thinning the bottom bezels a bit, which the render above seems to have confirmed. It is also similar to that of a recent leak which shows off the phone in various color options that are supposedly available to customers upon the phone’s release.

That being said, this render also seemingly confirms that a dual camera setup will not be making its way into the Galaxy S9, which we have to wonder why as it is almost like a prerequisite for companies to include them in their flagships in this day and age. It also looks like the fingerprint sensor on the back is still present, which potentially quashes the rumor that the Galaxy S9 could have an in-display sensor.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but we expect that Samsung will announce the phone in the next couple of months or so.

Google Chromecast, Apple TV Will Be Sold By Amazon (Again)

Amazon seems to have some kind of on-again, off-again relationship with some of the big tech companies out there, such as Google and Apple. As you might have heard, previously Amazon decided to stop selling the Google Chromecast and the Apple TV, but now it looks like Amazon has decided to start selling them again.

In a statement provided to CNET who first broke the news, an Amazon spokeswoman was quoted as saying, “I can confirm that we are assorting Apple TV and Chromecast,” but unfortunately did not elaborate any further. While the Chromecast and Apple TV are available via other retailers, being listed on Amazon is no doubt a big deal for both companies as it increases its accessibility.

Plus there are customers who might prefer shopping on Amazon, whether it be because they just prefer the platform, or have credit that they’d like to use, and so on. Note that neither gadget is available for purchase just yet, but based on Amazon’s statement it shouldn’t be too long before they will be available for purchase, and hopefully before the holidays too.

That being said, we wonder if Amazon is hoping for a little quid pro quo from Google, as the latter company has recently pulled support for YouTube on the Amazon Echo Show and Fire TV, so hopefully the relisting of the Chromecast could get Google to change their minds.
