Bitcoin is failing as a currency

It’s been a good year for bitcoin investors but a terrible one for those who hoped that the cryptocurrency would become the de facto tender for the internet. Satoshi Nakamoto, its creator, may be dismayed at what has become of the project, intended a…

Volvo’s Self-Driving Car Experiment Reportedly Being Scaled Back

Volvo is one of the many major car manufacturers working on self-driving cars. The company had previously announced a rather ambitious experiment involving its self-driving cars. It was planning to deliver 100 autonomous SUVs to real people in Sweden for testing. Volvo was going to launch this program in 2017 but according to a new report, the Drive Me program is now being scaled back.

The company had originally announced that it would deliver 100 of its XC90 self-driving SUVs to real people in Sweden. It would later provide a similar number of cars to families in China and the UK. All of the participants of this program would test the cars that would have been capable of running in “unsupervised” autonomous mode on select pre-approved freeways.

Volvo says that the Drive Me program will now be launched in 2021 instead. A report by Automotive News mentions that the company is also reducing the number of self-driving cars that will be involved in this project.

The report says that Volvo will be giving these cars out to 100 people and won’t be giving out 100 cars over the next four years. They won’t be fully self-driving either. The cars will be Level 2 semi-autonomous so they will offer functionality similar to commercially available semi-autonomous driving systems in Europe and the United States.

Volvo will eventually give participating families vehicles with higher levels of automation but that’s going to take time. The ambitious plan of throwing them into the deep end, so to speak, with fully autonomous cars has been shelved for now.

Android 8.1 Causing Multi-Touch Issues For Some Users

Google released Android 8.1 Oreo for its Pixel and Nexus devices earlier this month. The new update fixes some issues and adds a couple of minor features. It appears to be causing problems for some users as well. Some Pixel owners have been complaining about multi-touch issues on their devices after they updated them to Android 8.1 Oreo. They’re complaining that the update broke multi-touch on their devices.

Some of the affected Pixel owners have taken to Google Forums and Reddit to complain that the multi-touch feature of their handsets was broken by the Android 8.1 update.

One user even mentions that this issue was present in the first developer preview of Android 8.1. If that really is the case, it’s surprising to see that the issue wasn’t caught before the firmware was rolled out to the public.

The users say that this problem is most noticeable when they’re playing games that rely on multi-touch input. It’s also noticeable in other apps that require using multiple fingers to get things done.

The temporary fix that these users found is simple. They just rolled back their devices to Android 8.0. This rules out any hardware-based issues on the affected devices.

Google appears to be looking into the issue as a community manager at the Pixel User Community has confirmed today. However, it’s unclear how long it might take for the company to send out a fix for this.

Armed Robbers Steal $1.8 Million In Virtual Currency

Virtual currency is just as susceptible to being stolen as any stacks of dollar bills that you might have hidden under your bed. Thieves can make off with your digital wallet and if they have the necessary information, they can transfer the virtual funds in their own digital wallet. That’s exactly what Louis Meza and an accomplice did to their victim. They stole $1.8 million worth of ethereum virtual currency from his digital wallet.

The thief has since been charged with robbery by the Manhattan District Attorney. Meza and his accomplice allegedly help the victim up at gunpoint, lured him into a vehicle and stole his keys, cellphone, and wallet. Meza used the keys to enter the victim’s apartment and steal his digital wallet.

The DA’s press release mentions that Meza knew the victim and was also aware that he had a lot of money tied up in ethereum. “Meza insisted on ordering a car service for the victim, who entered a minivan after parting ways with Meza,” after meeting him on the evening of November 4th the press release said.

Meza has been charged with robbery, criminal possession of stolen property, computer tampering, and computer trespass.

“This case demonstrates the increasingly common intersection between cyber and violent crime,” said NY County District Attorney Cyrus Vance, cautioning that this type of time will become increasingly common as values of cryptocurrencies continue to surge.

Star Wars: Jedi Challenges Update Brings New Characters

Lenovo and Disney announced the Star Wars: Jedi Challenge augmented reality game experience in August. The game is produced by Disney and is powered by Lenovo’s hardware. The package contains a Lenovo Mirage AR headset, Lightsaber Controller, and Tracking Beacon for $199. The game itself is going to receive an update soon with new Star Wars planet and characters. The update has been confirmed merely a day before the upcoming movie is due to open in cinemas across the globe.

A new planet Crait, that will be seen for the first time in The Last Jedi, is now available in this AR game. It brings three new levels, the First Order AT-M6 walker, and new enemies.

Players can challenge two elite Praetorian Guards to a battle at the same time and can also duel with the Riot Control Stormtrooper and First Order Stormtrooper Executioner.

Porgs, the cute little intergalactic species that this trilogy has introduced to the universe, are making their way to this augmented reality experience as well.

This new content expansion for Star Wars: Jedi Challenges is going to be released at some point next month. A precise date has not been provided as yet. The expansion will be available through the Star Wars: Jedi Challenges mobile app.

Pokemon GO Sprint ads as notifications: Are you kidding me?

Notifications from the Pokemon GO app arrived this week with a promotion from Sprint encouraging phone buys. This was not the first time Niantic sent a notification to users on iPhone and Android devices, but it was the first time they pushed for an outside buy. In this rather blatant advertisement this morning, Niantic promised a reward of in-game currency … Continue reading
