LastPass Authenticator App Security Flaw Fixed

The only problem with password managers is that once a person has access to your master list, you’re in big trouble. This is why password managers usually have an added layer of security to prevent users from accessing the master list unless they have a master password, or in the case of LastPass where they created an app requiring users to scan their fingerprint or enter a PIN (this acts as two-factor authentication).

However last week it seems that a developer revealed that he was able to bypass the security on the Android version of LastPass Authenticator, which thankfully the company has since managed to fix. According to LastPass, “When a researcher discovered a workaround for the extra the PIN/fingerprint prompt, our engineering team fixed the issue that allowed the workaround and the update is available now. Now when the fingerprint/PIN feature is enabled, users must provide their fingerprint or PIN code in order to view the one-time code.”

The company also adds, “Using the reported workaround to access someone’s temporary codes would have been difficult since it requires access to the device, and the one-time codes are useless without the username and password for the services they are used. At no time did the identified workaround allow access to the TOTP secrets used to generate the one-time codes.”

Like we said, the update is now available that should address the issue so if you are running Android, then head on over to the Google Play Store and download the latest version of the Authenticator app.

Apple Apologizes For iPhone Battery Fiasco, Offers Battery Replacements For $29

With as many as eight lawsuits filed against them, we started to wonder what Apple planned to do to get themselves out of this mess. Turns out Apple has an answer in the form of an official apology as well as offer to replace batteries on affected iPhone units at a highly-discounted rate.

Battery replacements for out-of-warranty iPhones typically cost $79, but as a token of apology, Apple has announced that they will reduce the price down to $29. “Apple is reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 — from $79 to $29 — for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, starting in late January and available worldwide through December 2018.”

The company has also announced that they plan to release an update to iOS that will give users more “visibility” into the health of their iPhone’s battery, so they have a better idea of whether or not it is actually affecting their device’s performance. This had actually been suggested before where it was proposed that Apple could build in notifications in iOS that warn users when their batteries might need replacing.

For the most part Apple is still pretty much standing by their previous claims, in which this was done out of providing a better experience to users and prevent unexpected shutdowns, but they are apologizing for the way the issue was handled. Recently companies such as Motorola and HTC have come forward voluntarily with statements that they do not slow down their phones despite aging batteries.

Pixel C Tablet Dropped From The Google Store

The Google Pixel C tablet was officially announced a couple of years ago back in 2015, which we suppose by all accounts does make it “old”. This is why it doesn’t come as a complete surprise to learn that Google has pulled the tablet from its online store. Google has not made any official announcement, but going to its page will now redirect users to the Pixelbook.

We can’t say for sure why Google has dropped the tablet from its store, but like we said, it is considered old as far as technology is concerned, and Google has been known to phase products in and out without much fanfare. The company also issued a statement to Engadget where they said that it is “common” for them to stop selling a product after it has been out for a few years, which pretty much confirms the speculation.

That being said, it is unclear as to how well the Pixel C tablet did compared to its predecessors, like the Nexus tablets. In a way it was slightly more appealing due to its keyboard accessory that in a way allowed it to be a competitor to the Microsoft Surface tablet. The good news is that the last update to the tablet was Android 8.0 Oreo, so if you are still holding onto it, you should still be able to squeeze out a couple of years from it.

New Apple iPhone ‘Batterygate’ Lawsuits Filed In France, South Korea

As you might have heard, Apple has been hit with as many as eight lawsuits over the iPhone battery scandal, in which Apple admitted that they did release a software update that slowed down iPhones with aging batteries. However it looks like the lawsuits do not plan on stopping as new lawsuits have since been filed against Apple in France and South Korea.

The lawsuit in France was filed by an activist group called Halte à l’Obsolescence Programmée (HOP) which stands for “Stop Planned Obsolescence”. The lawsuit alleges that “Apple has put in place a global strategy of programmed obsolescence in order to boost its sales,” and also bases the lawsuit on a law introduced in France in 2015 that makes it a crime for companies to purposely reduce the lifespan of a product in order to increase the rate of replacements.

According to Laetitia Vasseur, the co-founder of HOP, “Everything is organized to force consumers to renew their smartphones. However, when the phone is priced at 1,200 euros ($1,434.00), which is more than the SMIC (the minimum monthly wage in France), these practices are unacceptable and must be punished. It is our mission to defend consumers and the environment against this waste organized by Apple.”

Over in South Korea, it seems that two class-action lawsuits have been planned and that law firms are now recruiting plaintiffs. That being said, Apple has since issued an apology on how it handled the situation, and also announced a new battery replacement program which will see the cost of battery replacements reduce to $29. The company will also issue an update to iOS that will provide users with better visibility with regards to the health of their batteries.

Chrome OS Will Soon Let Android Apps Run In The Background

Recently Google has started to allow Android apps to be run on Chrome OS which means that Chromebook users now have access to more apps than before. However the only downside is that Android apps couldn’t run in the background, meaning that they are paused when the app isn’t in focus.

This can be a bit troublesome for some users who might require multiple apps to run at once, but the good news is that this is expected to change. According to a report from Chrome Unboxed, Google appears to be working on a new feature for Chrome OS called Android Parallel Tasks.

As the name implies, this feature will allow Android apps to continue running even when in the background. This feature will essentially turn Chrome OS devices into platforms that users are familiar with, such as Windows, Linux, or macOS, where keeping multiple apps open that are running simultaneously is more or less a default feature.

Right now Android Parallel Tasks is a feature in Chrome OS 64 beta, which means that it isn’t available to all users yet. However given that it is in beta testing, we expect that it should soon be released to all users. In the meantime you can check out the video above to get an idea of what to expect.

Apple found itself in hot water with slowing iPhones, and today’s apology for how it communicated the iOS power management system is its attempt to patch things up with frustrated users.
