iPhone X Adoption Has Reportedly Outpaced The iPhone 8, 8 Plus

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were released towards the later part of September, and the iPhone X was released in early November, which means that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus had more than a month advantage compared to the iPhone X in terms of sales, but it seems that earlier reports of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus not selling so well could be true.

According to Business Insider, they point towards data from analytics firm Mixpanel which reveals that the iPhone X’s adoption has managed to outpace that of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, despite it being more expensive and released later. In fact as you can see in the chart above, the iPhone X’s adoption has outpaced that of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus by a pretty huge margin.

That being said, we can’t say for sure if these numbers are accurate. Apple in the past used to release official figures for first weekend/week sales, but the company has stopped doing that in recent times, meaning that many have had to rely on third-party data. However like we said, the data from Mixpanel sort of confirms earlier reports, in which the demand for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus weren’t as hot as many would have expected.

This was attributed to customers reportedly waiting for the iPhone X’s release to see if the phone is worth the money. This isn’t to say that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are flops, but in the face of the iPhone X with its OLED screen, new Face ID security feature, and its edge-to-edge display, it’s not hard to imagine why some customers might prefer the newer (albeit more expensive) device.

Toyota, Panasonic Considering Joint Development Of EV Batteries

Despite cars being on the road for as long as they have, you couldn’t really say that we’ve perfected the design, as improvements can always be made to things like the engine, the aerodynamics, tires, and so on. The same is doubly true for electric cars which have been around for much less time.

On this front we’re talking about the batteries used in EVs, which is apparently an area that Toyota and Panasonic are considering teaming up for (via Reuters). Both companies recently made a joint announcement in which both companies indicated that they were considering working together towards furthering the development of batteries of EVs, or to be more specific, prismatic batteries.

This will be a departure from regular batteries used in EVs, like those used in Tesla which are cylindrical in nature. Prismatic batteries on the other hand are flat and pouch-shaped with a higher energy density, although the downside is that they are vulnerable to overheating and swelling, something you definitely don’t want to see while you’re driving.

Speaking at the joint news conference, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said, “The auto industry faces many hurdles to developing next-generation batteries which are difficult for automakers or battery makers to tackle on their own. It would be difficult for us to meet our 2030 goals given the current pace of battery development. That’s why we’re looking to Panasonic and other companies to help us develop ever-better cars and batteries.”

7-Eleven Testing Delivery Through Its Mobile App

7-Eleven is one of the world’s most well-known convenience stores. It is found all over the world and sells all manner of items, such as drinks, snacks, basic toiletries, and depending on where you are, hot food that you can heat up yourself. However it seems that 7-Eleven is starting to look at its operations differently, and are considering making delivery one of them.

According to the company’s press release, 7-Eleven has announced that they will begin testing out new ways of reaching their customers, such as through delivery or in-store pickups using the 7-Eleven mobile app. “When ordering items through 7‑ElevenNOW, 7‑Eleven customers can choose to receive direct delivery to their location or pick up their prepared order at the participating store of their choice within the 7‑ElevenNOW footprint.”

7-Eleven adds that all manner of product can be ordered or set for in-store pickup. “A wide selection of snacks, cosmetics, gift cards, home goods, beverages and hundreds of other products are available for purchase on the app, making 7‑Eleven the go-to place in order to get everything customers may need all from one location.”

However like we said, the feature is currently in testing and is only available at select Dallas stores, and whether or not it will roll out on a wider scale remains to be seen.

Microsoft’s Seeing AI App Updated With Handwriting Recognition

Earlier this year, Microsoft launched an app called Seeing AI that was aimed at those who are visually impaired. What the app does is that it uses your phone’s camera and when you point it at objects or people, through the use of AI it will be able to recognize them and tell the user what it is, which we guess in turn helps the user “see” their surroundings.

Now it looks like Microsoft has recently released an update for the app in which they add a bunch of new features, one of which includes handwriting recognition. This means that you could use the app and point it at a handwritten note and it will be able to tell you what the note says.

In addition to handwriting recognition, the update to the app also introduces color recognition so that users who are visually impaired can tell what colors the app is looking at. There is also currency recognition, which might come in handy when travelling overseas, and also a musical light detector, which can recognize when lights are on.

This can help users to avoid touching a hot bulb, or to let them know if a switch is on (assuming the switch has a light indicator). The update should already be live, so head on over to the iTunes App Store for the download.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pen, Notebook 9 (2018) Laptops Announced

One of the products that Samsung is known for would be its Galaxy Note series of Android handsets which would come with an accompanying stylus, the S Pen, which when coupled with software on the phone allowed it to do more than just a regular stylus. If you’re looking for that functionality on a laptop, you’re in luck.

Samsung has recently announced a couple of new laptops in the form of the Notebook 9 Pen and the Notebook 9. As the name implies, the Notebook 9 Pen is a laptop that comes with a stylus, which also means that the laptop in question comes with touchscreen functionality. Samsung has also designed it to be a hybrid, where users can fold the display back on itself so that it doubles up as a tablet.

The laptop features a 13-inch display and is powered by an Intel 8th-generation Core processor, with support for up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. As for the “regular” Notebook 9 laptops, these will come in three different flavors, ranging from 13.3-inch displays to that of 15-inch, and save for their differences in design and lack of a touchscreen display, they will share similar hardware specs in terms of RAM and processor.

No word on pricing of these laptops just yet, but Samsung is expected to unveil them in full at CES 2018 which kicks off in January 2018 next year.
