Disney-Fox Deal Could Be Announced This Thursday

It’s starting to look like the rumors of a Disney acquisition of Fox is starting to peak because according to the latest report from CNBC, it seems that the deal could be announced as soon as this Thursday, which is tomorrow. This is in line with CNBC’s earlier report last week which suggested that Disney was closing in on the deal.

For those hearing about this for the first time, last month there were rumors that Disney could be looking to buy out Fox, or at least some of it, such as the company’s television and studio production assets, leaving Fox with just the news and sports. However the initial report claimed that talks had stalled, suggesting that maybe the deal might not go through after all, at least until last week’s report that revealed that an official announcement could be getting close.

It is unclear how much the deal could cost Disney, but estimates have indicated that Fox’s assets could be worth $60 billion, but exactly how much Disney could end up paying remains to be seen. Assuming this deal goes through, it would be a huge deal for Disney as it means that they’ll have more IPs under their belt.

It would also herald the return of some of Marvel’s IPs, such as X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool, which could potentially see them folded into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future. In any case if the rumors are true, we guess we’ll find out as soon as tomorrow, so check back with us then for the details.

Adobe Lightroom Update Uses AI To Edit Your Photos

Editing photos takes skill, such as being able to choose the right colors/tone that will make a photo more interesting, as well as fixing things in the photo that you might have missed when taking the shot, like blown out highlights, areas that are too dark, and so on. However Adobe is hoping to make that easier, thanks to the use of AI.

Adobe has recently updated its Lightroom app where they are introducing AI to the photo editing software which will be powered by Adobe Sensei, the company’s neural network. What this means is that if you were to use the app’s Auto Settings, it can help to create “a better photo by analyzing your photo and comparing to tens of thousands of professionally edited photos to create a beautiful, pleasing image”.

Basically it will help you edit your photo based on what it thinks a properly edited photo should look like, based on the tens of thousands of photos it is comparing it to. Of course whether or not it will create a beautiful photo is a different story, simply because a lot of what makes a good photo is in the composition of the photo itself prior to the photo being taken.

If you were to snap a photo that’s badly composed, out of focus, or blurry due to camera shake, then all the editing in the world probably couldn’t help, but if you have snapped a decent photo or two, then hopefully the new AI-powered Auto Settings will take it to the next level. This new feature will be applied to Adobe Lightroom on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and the web.

Google Assistant To Come To Tables And More Android Phones

If you do not own a Pixel or Nexus handset that comes with the latest Android update, then chances are you are probably missing out on some newer Android features, such as Google Assistant, especially when you consider that Android 8.0 Oreo is only installed on 0.5% of all Android devices.

However the good news is that while Google can’t really do anything about updating your non-Nexus/Pixel phone to Oreo, what they can do is bring some features to older devices, which is what the company has recently announced in which they will be bringing Google Assistant onto older Android smartphones as well as Android tablets.

According to Google’s announcement, “From phones to speakers to watches and more, the Google Assistant is already available across a number of devices and languages—and now, it’s coming to Android tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat and 6.0 Marshmallow and phones running 5.0 Lollipop.”

Google is claiming that the Google Assistant rollout has already started and is finding its way to various countries around the world. As for those who are using Android tablets, Google is saying that the feature should be rolled out over the coming week, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for its availability if this is something you’re interested in.

Photographer Captures Entire Wedding Using Just The iPhone 8 Plus

Our smartphone cameras have come a long way from back in the day where the maximum resolution they captured was VGA, and where it was more of a novelty to use the camera feature rather than functionality. However looking at today’s cameras, it is clear that technology has evolved immensely.

So much so that photographer Barb Simkova decided that she would chance it by shooting an entire wedding using just her iPhone 8 Plus (via iMore). According to Simkova, “I love that an iPhone allows you to capture something quickly, with little technical knowledge and set up. Portrait mode blows me away – some of the images that come out of the iPhone in portrait mode have such a beautiful depth to them that I find myself exclaiming, ‘THAT was shot on an iPhone?’”

Now as you can see in the photos on the website, they look absolutely stunning and in some instances, you’d be hardpressed to tell that they were taken using a smartphone. Of course in terms of sharpness, it isn’t quite as razor-sharp compared to using a “proper” professional camera with a high-quality lens, but like we said, the composition, the colors, and the editing do make up for a lot of it.

Note that Simkova isn’t the first photographer to shoot an entire wedding using an iPhone. Last year another photographer took photos at a wedding using the iPhone 6 Plus, which goes to show how far we’ve come along in terms of technology, and also how important things like composition are.

LG Patents A Transparent, Flexible Heads-Up Display For Cars

Seeing a heads-up display (HUD) used in cars isn’t exactly an uncommon sight these days, as there are a few carmakers who are implementing the feature to their vehicles. However it seems that LG could have some ideas of their own, which based on the diagram above could make for a slightly neater solution.

In a patent discovered by the folks at LetsGoDigital, it describes how LG plans on using a flexible and transparent display to create a HUD experience for drivers. The patent shows how the display itself can fit in the roof of the car, and can roll down when called upon. The fact that it uses a flexible display means that it can be rolled out and kept more compact compared to regular displays which are more rigid.

We have heard that LG is interested in flexible display technology, so this doesn’t really come as a surprise. The display will also be transparent, which means that drivers can have it in front of them without it obstructing their view of the road and traffic. The display can show the driver all kinds of information, such as when the car in front suddenly brakes, the display can flash a warning sign.

The display (and presumably the car itself) can be connected to a server, which can then pull information from other connected objects that you might have at home or the office, like security camera footage, and so on, although this doesn’t sound particularly safe. The patent also describes a variety of ways the flexible display can be used, like wrapped around the front and side of the car, on the back of the headrest so that passengers can watch shows, and so on.

That being said, whether or not the patent will actually be applied to commercially available cars remains to be seen, but as LetsGoDigital note, LG has partnerships with a couple of carmakers, such as Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz.

Bragi To Unveil ‘Contextually Aware’ Earphones At CES 2018

If you think about it, headphones are basically speakers that you put in your ears, and for the most part that’s what they’ve been all this while, with different models offering different sound quality. However these days headphones are starting to evolve to do more than just playback audio, and some headphone makers such as Bragi are starting to put AI inside of them.

In fact it seems that Bragi’s enhanced headphone efforts don’t just stop there, because according to the company’s partner Audio Analytic (via Engadget), Bragi is expected to unveil a pair of contextually aware headphones at CES 2018, where these headphones can recognize sounds around them and react accordingly.

So what does this mean? For starters it can recognize when someone is speaking, which means that the headphones can then automatically adjust the volume so that the wearer can listen to what’s being said to them without having to remove their headphones. They also cite examples of how the headphones can pick up and recognize sounds, like those of an emergency vehicle, or cars, and can notify the wearer to them, which can come in handy if you love running outdoors.

Bragi is expected to demonstrate this new feature with the Dash Pro which was announced earlier this year. Whether or not the feature will be rolled out to the headphones or launched on a pair of newer headphones remains to be seen.

Target’s Latest Acquisition Will Help With Same-Day Delivery Capabilities

It is no secret that when it comes to retailers, Amazon is one of the companies to beat. Not only does Amazon offer a ton of products across a wide range of categories, but what sets the company apart is their logistics network, in which they are capable of sending out products that arrive on the same day itself.

This is something that Amazon’s retailers are working on, such as Target who earlier this year acquired a company to help facilitate same-day deliveries. However it seems that Target isn’t quite done yet because in a press release, Target has announced that they will be acquiring another company by the name of Shipt that will also help to improve the company’s same-day delivery capabilities.

The acquisition is said to be worth $550 million in cash, and according to Target, “will leverage its network of stores and Shipt’s proprietary technology platform and community of shoppers to quickly and efficiently bring same-day delivery to guests across the country.” The company is also expecting that they’ll be able to implement the services across half of Target’s stores by early 2018, and across the majority of Target’s stores in all major markets by the 2018 holiday season.

According to John Mulligan, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Target, “With Shipt’s network of local shoppers and their current market penetration, we will move from days to hours, dramatically accelerating our ability to bring affordable same-day delivery to guests across the country.”
