Samsung Galaxy S9 Rumored To Feature Higher-Res Iris Scanner

While there are rumors suggesting that many Android OEMs are looking to make the shift to facial recognition technology ala Apple’s Face ID, Samsung is expected to maintain the iris scanner on its phones, in particular the Galaxy S9. However as expected there will be some improvements made to it.

In a report from The Korea Herald, Samsung will be upgrading the iris scanner on the Galaxy S9/S9+. This is expected to come in the form of the use of a 3MP camera versus the 2MP camera found on the Galaxy S8/S8+. Apparently the increase in megapixels is expected to allow for higher-resolution scanning, which should make it better/faster at recognizing users.

It is also expected to make it easier to recognize users in low-light situations, or when glasses are involved. “The iris camera lens will be improved to 3 megapixels from 2 megapixels of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 to capture clearer images. The scanner will better recognize users’ irises even when they wear eyeglasses, move their eyeballs or are in a too dark or too light environment.”

During our review of the Galaxy S8, we had no issues with the iris scanner but improving it to make it faster at recognizing users will most definitely be a welcomed upgrade.

WhatsApp For Web Could Get Picture-In-Picture Mode

If you wanted to see some of WhatsApp’s smartphone app feature make their way onto the web version of the messenger client, you might be pleased to learn that the latest beta discovered by WABetaInfo (via NDTV) has revealed some upcoming features that users might find handy.

For starters one of the features that is being brought over from mobile is support for picture-in-picture mode. What this means is that for certain links, like videos, will no longer open a new tab or window in your browser. Instead users can rely on an inline video player so that their conversation can continue uninterrupted.

Another feature in the beta that was discovered is the ability for WhatsApp users to reply group messages privately. This means that you can choose to reply a particular message privately to the person who sent it, while quoting it so that there will be context to your message. It also includes a feature in which group admins can set restrictions in group chats to prevent members from sending messages or media files.

This might come in handy for announcements that you don’t want to get lost or distracted by other group members chatting. No word on when the changes are expected to be rolled out, but if you do use WhatsApp for web at school or work, they could be worth keeping an eye out for.

Jony Ive To Resume Control Of Apple’s Design Team

When it comes to Apple’s products, it’s hard not to associate the design of some of the company’s more iconic products with its design chief, Jony Ive. However in case you didn’t know, Ive has been hands-off for the past couple of years from the day-to-day management of the design team, but he has since returned to his role.

In a report from Bloomberg and confirmed in a statement by Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette, Ive will be resume day-to-day management of Apple’s design team. “With the completion of Apple Park, Apple’s design leaders and teams are again reporting directly to Jony Ive, who remains focused purely on design.”

Of course Apple has more than one designer working for them, and during Ive’s “absence”, the hardware and software design teams were led by Alan Dye and Richard Howarth who reported directly to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, but Ive’s return will see him take control of the teams, although it was not reported as to what Dye and Howarth’s roles are now that Ive is back in control.

We’re not sure what this could mean for the future of Apple-designed products, but The Verge has noted that in Ive’s absence, Apple has released products with somewhat questionable design quirks. Hopefully with Ive’s return, he will be able to right the ship like he did back in the day, where his design of Apple’s iconic products are said to have played a vital role in revitalizing the company back when they were brink of bankruptcy.

Microsoft Edge For Android Passes 1 Million Downloads

While Chrome might be one of the most popular browsers available on mobile devices these days, it seems that Microsoft could be quickly catching up. As you might have heard, Microsoft recently brought its Edge browser out of beta on Android, and it appears that doing so was the right choice.

According to the Google Play Store tracker (via Windows Central), it looks like Edge for Android has managed to pass 1 million downloads following its exit from beta last week. This seems to suggest that many Android users are at the very least curious about how Edge will perform on their phones.

Also given that Windows is the most popular desktop operating system in the world, the ability to sync Edge’s mobile features with its Windows 10 counterpart probably comes in handy as well. Microsoft has in the past gotten a ton of flak over its Internet Explorer browser, and Edge is meant to represent a new direction for the company, and so far its popularity on Android seems to be a good sign for Microsoft.

That being said, download numbers are just part of the overall picture. A more important question is how many users will continue to keep using Edge on their phones, a question that has yet to be answered.
