Apple Supplier Suggests That Face ID Could Come To 2018’s iPhones

For the most part based on various reviews, Face ID works as advertised, although from time to time, we do hear stories about the feature hiccuping in terms of functionality, but nothing too major. So the question is, is Face ID good enough to the point where Apple will want to implement it across their iOS devices?

According to recent reports, it seems that one particular Apple supplier think so. During a recent earnings report covered by analyst Gene Munster, Apple supplier Finisar announced the purchase of a 700,000 square foot plant. If you’re unfamiliar with Finisar, they are the company that suppliers vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays, which is used in the TrueDepth camera system and subsequently Face ID.

The purchase of the manufacturing plant has been interpreted as Finisar’s attempt to ramp up the production of its components, and while they do supply to other companies, the report is suggesting that the ramp up could also be to help facilitate implementation of Face ID into 2018’s iPhones.

We have heard reports that Apple could adopt Face ID in newer iOS devices if the feature was well-received, which includes iPhones and also iPads. Whether or not those reports are true remains to be seen, but this does seem to hint that Apple could be interested in expanding its availability.

Game Of Thrones Season 8 Will Be Released In 2019

A new season of Game of Thrones has been released every year without fail, although this year’s season was released a bit later than expected. Unfortunately if you were looking forward to season 8 in 2018, you’ll be disappointed to learn that season 8 will only arrive in 2019, according to the show’s actress Sophie Turner.

Speaking to Variety in an interview, Turner revealed that production on season 8 only begun a couple of months ago. Asked about the progress, Turner said, “We started in October, so we’re maybe like a tenth of the way through. [Laughs.] No, no, we’ve got six or seven months left.” She also confirmed that the season would be released in 2019, following a bunch of other movies that are also on her plate.

As you might have heard, Turner will be in the X-Men: Dark Phoenix movie, and when asked about it, she said, “Yeah, I’m really excited. “Game of Thrones” comes out in 2019. “Dark Phoenix” is in November. Then I have a couple indie movies coming out. I’m a producer on my next movie [“Girl Who Fell From the Sky”]. So I’m really excited about the future.”

This seems to be in line with what we have heard before, which is that the release date of season 8 has yet to be decided, indicating that a 2018 release was unlikely. Given that season 8 will be the final season in the series and is expected to only feature 6 episodes, here’s hoping that it will be worth the wait.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 Will Probably Arrive In 2019

Much to the joy of many, Netflix has confirmed that Stranger Things will be renewed for a third season. However the company did not mention when that third season will arrive, but a recent interview actor David Harbour did with Variety has indicated that the third season will most likely be released in 2019.

Harbour doesn’t confirm the release per se, but it’s based on his opinion considering that the script is still being written, indicating that it will be a while before it even enters into production. “I mean, one of the things that’s annoying for fans is that it takes us a long time to do them. Like, you probably won’t get [Season 3] until sometime in 2019. But also part of the thing is, like any good thing, they need time. And those guys work so hard. I mean, they just sit in their apartment and write for 12, 14 hours a day.”

We guess that makes sense, and to be fair Netflix does have a lot on its plate for 2018, with various shows expected to return for new seasons, like their Marvel TV-series, along with the final season of House of Cards sans Kevin Spacey. In the meantime for those who can’t wait that long, reviews of Netflix’s German-based TV series “Dark” has been rather positive, with some comparing it to Stranger Things, so perhaps that could be worth a gander.

Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) Manual Confirms Infinity Display

Samsung’s Infinity Display design so far has been used for its high-end flagship handsets, like the Galaxy S8, S8+, and the Note 8. However it looks like Samsung is getting ready to bring that feature over to its mid-range handsets because according to a report from SamMobile, that design could be coming to handsets like the Galaxy A8/A8+.

This is based on a recently discovered manual for the handset in which several details about the upcoming handset have been revealed, such as its Infinity Display. In addition to the display, which basically will see the display stretched from edge to edge, the Galaxy A8/A8+ phones are also expected to feature dual front-facing cameras which could hint that a portrait mode-like feature could be coming to the front-facing camera.

The good news is that based on the manual, it looks like Samsung will continue keeping the headphone jack on the Galaxy A8/A8+, which could be a good sign for Samsung’s 2018 flagships. Unfortunately there is no word on when the phone will be announced, and given that CES is around the corner, perhaps we could learn more about the phone then, or maybe even earlier.

Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more details, so check back with us at a later date if you’d like more updates.

Report Suggests Consumers Prefer Software Updates Over New Phones

Say you have a phone that’s about 2-3 years old and you were given the choice of either buying a new phone or just updating the current software to its next major build, which would you choose? According to a report from the New York Post, it seems that customers these days would much rather continuing updating their phones rather than buy a new one.

According to Jan Dawson, founder and chief analyst of Jackdaw Research, “We all know people still carrying around a 4- or 5-year-old smartphone and see no reason to upgrade.” He also notes that customers who used to change phones every couple of years “are starting to change their behavior.”

We have to wonder if this could be due to the fact that carriers these days no longer offer phone subsidies, where instead they allow customers to purchase a phone and pay it back over the course of 24 months in installments. Chetan Sharma, CEO of Chetan Sharma Consulting says, “Consumers are paying full price for new cellphones, so they are treating cellphones like computer purchases and keeping them longer.”

It is a rather interesting shift in trend, if true, but what do you guys think? With the new carrier plans where customers are encouraged to buy in installments, do you think that this has made you less inclined to upgrade your phone every couple of years?

Netflix For OnePlus 5, 5T Can’t Play Videos In HD (For Now)

With our smartphones sporting display resolutions that go beyond Full HD, it is no surprise that various video services are offering Full HD or higher-resolution video playback via their apps. Unfortunately for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T owners, it appears that Netflix for both devices currently do not support HD video playback.

Note that this isn’t just Netflix, but also other video streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and so on. This is according to a report from The Verge who recently pointed out the issue which was discovered in a posting on the OnePlus forums. According to the post, it seems that this is due to the lack of support for Widevine Level 1 DRM.

If you’re not familiar with Widevine, we suppose you can’t really be blamed since for the most part, most of our phones have no issues with HD video playback or better. As it stands, the 5T supports Widevine Level 3 which supports standard definition streams, but the good news is that according to a company spokesperson, there are plans for an update that will enable Level 1, although there is no mention of when it will be released.

It does seem odd that for a smartphone in this day and age would lack HD streaming, but hopefully the update will come soon for the sake of OnePlus customers.
