Google To Bring Google Assistant To Feature Phones

Google Assistant is Google’s digital assistant that is available on Android phones. These days with smartphones being as ubiquitous as they are, it is easy to forget that feature phones still exist, and that there are plenty of markets out there that still rely on it. Google recognizes this, and has made an attempt to boost feature phones by bringing Google Assistant to them.

However as it stands it seems that there is only one phone that will feature the software for now, and it is the Reliance JioPhone. This is a feature phone launched in India that will feature its own operating system called KaiOS, which in turn is based on Mozilla’s Firefox OS. The version of Google Assistant in the phone had to be customized in order for it to fit, meaning that what we see is probably different from what we’re used to.

However it seems that for the most part, its core functionality is more or less the same, but it could be a good sign of things to come as it means that Google Assistant could arrive on more feature phones in the future. So far Google has been making some pretty good efforts at catering to emerging markets.

This includes the launch of Android One handsets, as well as the recent launch of Android Go, which is basically a build of Android designed for lower-end handsets.

BBC Will Educate School Kids On Spotting Fake News

Fake news is a huge problem because while misinformation on the surface might seem like a small thing, it could lead to incorrect perceptions, which in turn could fuel one’s prejudice towards a particular subject, race, religion, and so on. This is why many companies are working to clamp down on it.

In fact it seems that the BBC will be taking things one step further (via Engadget) by educating school kids on how to spot fake news. How they will do this is by sending reporters to various schools and events to educate children on how to spot fake articles, as well as release digital resources, and also teach kids how to think more critically about what they read online, so as to be better at separating fact from fiction.

There will also be a game developed by Aardman that will put students on the floor of a newsroom. According to Director-General of the BBC Tony Hall, “We at the BBC have a real responsibility here. By sharing our journalistic expertise, we want to give young people the skills and awareness they need to be confident about identifying the real news stories, and calling out the fakes.”

It is an interesting approach and we have to wonder if there are plans for other organizations to do the same for school kids in other parts of the world.

Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch Receives Major OS Update

Earlier this year, Fitbit launched their first smartwatch in the form of the Fitbit Ionic. Given that the Ionic is not powered by Android Wear, it means that it won’t have access to the variety of apps that Android Wear devices have access to. This was one of the criticisms of the Ionic at launch, which was the relative lack of available apps.

However the good news is that Fitbit has worked to changed that, and in the latest update that they have issued to the smartwatch’s operating system, not only have they improved upon the features of the device, but it has also included a bunch of new apps. “Starting today Fitbit Ionic users will be treated to more than 100 data-rich (and interactive!) clock faces and more than 60 apps from Fitbit, Fitbit Labs, popular brands, and developers (more on all that below), as well as helpful enhancements to existing features.”

To be more specific, Fitbit has launched 14 new apps for the Ionic from “popular brands”, such as Walgreens, Nest, The New York Times, and Yelp, just to name a few. Some of these apps aren’t available yet and are expected to be released by the end of the year, but know that they will be arriving for the Ionic.

Other improvements to the watch include support for multi-card payment and a faster user interface, so if you do own the Ionic, you’ll want to check out the update ASAP.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue HD Rated In Korea

According to an earlier report, it was suggested that Assassin’s Creed Rogue could be coming to the PS4 and Xbox One. If this was something you were interested in, you’ll be pleased to learn that the HD version of the game has recently been rated by the Korea Games Rating Board, which means that we could be close to seeing a release.

Ubisoft has yet to officially announce anything so take don’t get your hopes up just yet, but hopefully we’ll be able to hear something from the publisher soon. For those unfamiliar, Assassin’s Creed Rogue was launched several years ago during the PS3 to PS4 transition period.

Back then, Ubisoft released two versions of Assassin’s Creed, one of which was Unity designed for the Xbox One and PS4, and Rogue which was designed for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The launch of the HD remake of Rogue would suggest that the game could be arriving onto the current-gen consoles, so if you didn’t get to play the game before, this could be your chance.

There’s no word on when the game will be released, so details about what the HD version of the game will contain remain unknown, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.

Netgear Recalls Arlo Outdoor Camera Power Adapters Due To Fire Hazard

Netgear has a series of outdoor cameras for home security purposes, like the Arlo, Arlo Pro, and the Arlo Go. Unfortunately it seems that the power adapter that is used for these cameras is having issue, so much so that the company has issued a recall for them over the potential of a fire hazard.

According to the CPSC, “This recall involves all model VMA4700 NETGEAR Arlo outdoor power adapters that were sold separately as aftermarket accessories for the Arlo, Arlo Pro and Arlo Go wire-free outdoor cameras.. This recall only involves the VMA4700 aftermarket model sold separately.”

The report also adds that so far Netgear has received about seven reports of the power adapter cord overheating, with one incident resulting in a fire, but luckily there have been no injuries so far. “The firm has received seven reports of the power adapter cord melting and overheating, resulting in one fire. No injuries have been reported.”

Apparently it seems that despite the power adapter’s connector being weatherproof, it was discovered that a defect has allowed water to leak in, which in turn can cause it to short circuit, melt, and catch on fire. Customers who do own the power adapter should send it in ASAP and get it replaced.
