Google Home Max launch isn’t going to miss the holidays

Apple has received an amusingly large amount of backlash over its decision to delay its HomePod launch past the holiday and shopping season. It seems that Google won’t make the same mistake with its equivalent Home Max speakers. According to Best Buy’s very early listing, the speakers will become available for purchase mid-December, just as Google promised. It remains to … Continue reading

Tesla Model S Hacked To Mine Cryptocurrency

Mining for cryptocurrency requires a lot of power, thanks to the powerful hardware that is typically used in mining rigs. This means that those who want to mine for cryptocurrency need to think about their electricity bills, and whether or not the cost of running such a rig is worth the effort.

However it seems that one miner might have figured out a way to mine for cryptocurrency in a greener fashion, which is by hacking his Tesla Model S to do the mining for him, as you can see in the photo above that was shared on Facebook via the Tesla Owners Worldwide group. But doesn’t recharging the Model S require electricity? Of course it does, but it seems that this has been offset with the free access to Tesla’s Supercharger networks, which means that his costs only involve putting together the rig, notwithstanding the cost of the car itself.

However as Electrek points out, there are some technical and ethical issues with this setup. In terms of technical, the constant drain on the power means increased use of the battery pack, which ultimately means that it will degrade faster than it normally would if you used the Model S purely for driving.

There is also an ethical issue where the Superchargers were definitely not designed for such purposes, and that some might have a problem with such setups that hog the Superchargers for non-driving purposes. However as a proof-of-concept, it is pretty clever, but whether or not such a rig is sustainable in the long-run remains to be seen, but what do you guys think?

Blizzard Incentivizes Using An Authenticator With Battle.net Account

Two-factor authentication is one of the better ways of securing your account. This is because in addition to your username and password, an additional code which is typically generated on the spot, helps to provide that added layer of security. We’ve seen this apply to various online services, such as Blizzard’s Battle.net.

The Authenticator for Battle.net isn’t exactly new for Blizzard and its games, but it seems that perhaps in a bid to help make accounts more secure, Blizzard is trying to incentivize adding an Authenticator to your Battle.net account, such as giving gamers more bag slots in their World of Warcraft MMORPG.

The feature is now live in the 7.3.5 PTR, where it appears that gamers who have an Authenticator attached to their Battle.net account will get an additional four backpack slots. Note that this doesn’t mean you get four slots for four backpacks, but rather four extra slots within your base backpack. It doesn’t seem like much, but if you’re low on gold and can’t afford the larger bags, we’re sure the additional slots will come in handy.

So far it seems that this incentive only applies to World of Warcraft. We’re not sure if there are plans to do this for other Blizzard games, but it could be a good way to encourage gamers to beef up their own account’s security. In the meantime gamers who don’t have it can download the app via the iTunes App Store or Google Play.

Marriott Hotel Wants To Save Your Shower Doodles Digitally

We’re sure many of you guys have done this, where if you see a fogged up mirror or glass, you can’t help but doodle something on it. This happens in the shower too, and sometimes some people like to jot down some notes, some ideas, or messages while in there, and Marriott Hotel wants to help you with that.

Dubbed the “Splash of Brilliance”, these are rooms that have a glass shower down that they can doodle on, and it comes with an accompanying tablet so that if you have any ideas that you want to save for later, you can just record it digitally and then send it your email later. We suppose you could always grab your smartphone and do it yourself, but hey, sometimes hotels like to focus on the convenience that they can add to your stay, so why not?

According to the company, “After learning that over half of business travelers feel that their best ideas come while showering, Marriott Hotels is testing a one-of-a-kind technology that allows guests to scribe or sketch their brilliant ideas and send it to themselves before they get washed down the drain.”

This is a pilot program for now and is expected to only run for two months, but depending on how well-received this program is, Marriott could decided to either shut it down or expand it to their other hotel chains, but if you’d like to check it out, it will be available at Marriott Hotels Irvine, California.

Best Buy Listing Hints At Google Home Max’s Release For December 11

Earlier this October at Google’s Pixel 2 event, the company unveiled two new Google Home devices in the form of the Google Home Mini and the Home Max. The former has since been released and is essentially a smaller version of the Google Home, while the latter has yet to be released and is basically a larger Google Home.

However it seems that we might finally have our release date, thanks to a recent listing on Best Buy (via 9to5Google) in which the device was listed as having a release date of the 11th of December, 2017. Note that the current listing on Best Buy has since removed the 11th of December release date, so either the date was listed wrongly, or Best Buy posted it too early, but either way we’ll have to wait and see.

However we can assume that Google will want to cash in on the holiday sales, which means that a release ahead of Christmas wouldn’t be completely out of the question. The device in question is priced at $399 which is rather steep compared to the Google Home and Home Mini, but if you’re looking for larger and louder speakers with some smarts built into it, then this could be worth keeping an eye out for.

Apple’s Brooklyn Store Will Feature Sound Dampening Ceilings & Floors

You might think that a store is just a store, but some companies actually take the time to carefully design their stores to make it more than just somewhere you buy their products. This is why you might have noticed that certain stores are designed a certain way, and this is what Apple is going for in their upcoming downtown Brooklyn store.

According to a report from AppleInsider who went to tour the store before its public opening this Saturday, it seems that Apple wants to help users feel that they are in a different place when they enter the store, and by that we mean that they want users to feel like they are no longer in a bustling city. This is thanks to the installation of custom floors and ceilings which act as sound dampeners to help prevent noise from outside from coming in.

In fact it seems that Apple went one step further. According to Jason Barlia, the market director for Apple’s stores in New York City, he told AppleInsider that the floors were specially created to be isolated from the rest of the building. This is because there are train tracks below the surface, and by isolating the floors, it keeps vibrations to the minimum.

That being said, if you want to experience it for yourself then head on over this Saturday to check it out for yourself. The first customers who attend the store’s grand opening will also receive free Apple t-shirts.
