This creepy connected speaker hack is the latest IoT security risk

An odd Sonos and Bose glitch could allow hackers to remotely play audio through their speakers, or even trigger smart home commands. The security loophole – a fairly unusual combination of network settings and connected speaker architecture intended to make configuration easier – is the latest illustration of how fairly innocuous decisions around the Internet of Things can have unforeseen … Continue reading

Amazon Prime Sees Significant Growth During Holiday Season

Amazon has released its holiday shopping report. The company says that this was its biggest holiday season with customers across the globe. Amazon Prime members continued to grow with more than four million people either starting Prime free trials or beginning paid members in just one week alone. The company has also revealed that the Echo Dot was the top-selling Amazon device this holiday season.

Amazon says that it was a record holiday shopping season for its devices as millions more were purchased worldwide in 2017 compared to last year’s holiday season. The Echo Dot was its #1 selling product during this season with “millions sold.” It was also the best-selling product from any manufacturer in any category across all of Amazon.

The company mentions that customers purchased more than twice as many Amazon Fire TV Sticks compared to last year. It claims that the Fire TV remains the #1 streaming media player family in the United States, UK, Germany, and Japan.

The vast majority of the customers predictably shopped using their mobile app. Amazon says that customers worldwide shopping using its app increased nearly 70 percent this holiday season. It saw more than 1,400 electronics products being ordered per second on a mobile device.

In the fun facts section of its press release, Amazon mentions that customers purchased enough TVs to create nearly 2,500 towers the size of the Space Needle. They even purchased enough Instant Pot pressure cookers to make over nine million bowls of chili at once.

Kia And Hyundai Cars Will Feature AI Assistants In 2019

Car manufacturers are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistants for future models so it’s not surprising to see two firms with a history of adopting new in-car technology ahead of their rivals throw their hats in the ring as well. Kia and Hyundai have both revealed that their 2019 cars will include artificial intelligence-backed virtual assistants.

Kia and Hyundai will start to offer this virtual assistant in their cars by 2019. The companies are aiming to connect all of their models to this new technology by 2025.

Hyundai has been working with SoundHound to develop an Intelligent Personal Agent that will enable users to control their car and smart home devices remotely. It will also offer proactive suggestions based on the user’s past preferences and choices.

On the surface, it sounds like this new assistant will do basically what any other assistant can do. However, the report does mention that it will have the ability to recognize multiple commands. That means if the user tells the assistant to turn on the lights and tell them the time at the same time, it will be able to follow through on both commands instead of tripping over itself, so to speak.

Hyundai’s Intelligent Personal Agent is going to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 next month. A simplified version of the assistant will be tested in the company’s hydrogen fuel cell cars that will be taking to public roads in South Korea next year.

Apple Watch Glucose Reader Said To Be ‘Years Away’

Multiple reports have suggested that Apple wants its smartwatch to be taken as more than just a luxury smartwatch. It wants to develop the Apple Watch into a bonafide medical companion. Some reports have suggested that the company has been developing a non-invasive glucose reader for the Apple Watch. According to a new report, the Apple Watch glucose reader is “years away” from becoming a reality.

The New York Times reports that Apple is continuing research on the idea of including a non-invasive glucose monitor in the Apple Watch. However, industry experts suggest that it could take years before the idea can be transformed into a commercial product.

It’s believed that Apple wanted to offer this feature with the first Apple Watch that was released in 2015. However, it decided against it because the feature was either unreliable or forced a compromise in size and battery life that Apple was just not willing to make.

That’s not all. A glucose reader may also require approval by the Food and Drug Administration and that may take up time.

Apple is reportedly thinking about building an EKG monitor into the Apple Watch as well. If these reports are accurate, the Apple Watch may offer significantly different features in just a few years from now.

Uber’s Food Company Overtakes Its Ride-Hailing Business In Some Markets

Uber is best known for its ride-hailing service. If you need a ride, just open the Uber app and select where you want to go. An Uber driver nearby will accept your ride and take you where you want to go. However, Uber is also running a food-delivery business in several markets across the globe. It turns out, the food business has actually overtaken the ride-hailing business in some markets.

Uber calls its food-delivery business UberEats. It was launched in Los Angeles back in 2013 and has since been expanded to many markets across the globe.

Toussaint Wattinne, an UberEats general manager, confirmed to Business Insider that UberEats is bigger than the company’s transportation business in 19 European cities. Wattinne claims that UberEats is one of the fastest-growing food-delivery services in the world.

“When we attribute our growth and try to improve our service, the first thing that plays a big role is the restaurant selection we’re able to provide,” Wattinne said.

UberEats is now live in more than 30 countries with the United Kingdom being one of its largest geographical markets. It has partnered with over 8,000 restaurants in the UK alone.

The food-delivery service is generating more revenue than the transportation business in major European business cities like Milan, Madrid, and Grenoble. No wonder that UberEats is reportedly on track to bring in $3 billion in sales by the end of this year.

The company hasn’t officially revealed any information about the financials of this service. It hasn’t confirmed how many meals UberEats delivers per day and what the average order size is as well.

Nintendo Switch Seems To Be Doing Very Well In Japan

While Japan is yet to warm up to Microsoft’s gaming console, it appears to have fallen in love with the Nintendo Switch. The console has been performing very well in the country. It had a solid Christmas week which has pushed the overall sales figures for the console in Japan to over three million. Nintendo has sold more than three million units of the Switch in Japan.

The latest figures from Media Create reveal that Nintendo crossed the three million mark for Switch sales in Japan as of December 24th. It’s estimated to have sold 269,684 units of the Switch between December 18th and December 24th. The strong performance over Christmas week helped it reach a grand total of 3,178,100 units in Japan.

Nintendo has been able to achieve this milestone merely ten months after the console was released in the country. The Nintendo Switch was released in Japan on March 3rd, 2017.

The numbers could have been higher if the Switch hadn’t been in short supply for months. Fortunately, the demand doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon. It’s expected that Nintendo will see particularly strong demand for its console in Japan well into January 2018.

The Nintendo Switch has performed well in other markets as well. Nintendo confirmed earlier this month that it has sold ten million units of the Switch as of December 12th. It goes without saying that the figure has only increased since then.
