Israel Reportedly Launching Its Own Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency is all the rage these days and it’s now increasingly becoming a part of the global financial system. If a new report is to be believed, Israel is actually thinking about launching its own cryptocurrency. According to the report, the Bank of Israel is mulling the idea in order to create a faster payments system and reduce the amount of cash in the economy.

Citing a source in the country’s central bank, Reuters reports that Israel is thinking about launching its own digital currency. The report does caution that no decision has been made as yet regarding this move.

The source mentioned that the government is ready to legislate or include the digital currency option in its 2019 budget and economic package if the central bank gives it the green light.

It was also claimed that any digital currency launched by the country’s central bank will be centralized, secure and that it would abide by the money laundering rules. It’s going to be fundamentally different compared to popular digital currencies like Bitcoin which are decentralized and often see immense price volatility.

The government has been trying to limit the amount of cash in the economy for the past few years. Estimates put the black economy at 22 percent of the national output. Bank of Israel hasn’t officially commented on the matter as yet.

Lenovo Daydream VR Headset Gets FCC Certification

It’s no secret that Lenovo has been developing a standalone Daydream virtual reality headset and it appears that the company might unveil it soon. The Lenovo Daydream VR headset has now been spotted at the FCC. The certification by this regulatory body is often taken as an indication of an impending launch. With a big trade show around the corner, it’s highly likely that this device may be launched in the near future.

The FCC filing for a Mirage Solo headset with Daydream has been spotted. It doesn’t reveal a lot of details about this Lenovo device except that it will have a 4,000mAh battery and Bluetooth 5.0 support.

Lenovo is yet to confirm when it’s going to launch this much-awaited virtual reality headset. The company hasn’t said anything about the headset’s launch at this point in time.

The Consumer Electronics Show 2018 is going to take place in about a week or so in Las Vegas. It’s the biggest tech convention of the year and it would make sense for Lenovo to unveil the handset there.

Even if it’s unveiled at CES 2018, it remains to be seen when Lenovo will actually start shipping the headset. Hopefully, it won’t be a repeat of the release of Lenovo’s Windows Mixed Reality headset. That product was unveiled at CES 2017 back in January but wasn’t shipped until October.

Nokia 1 Android Go Handset Release Expected In March 2018

Google introduced Android Go earlier this year. It’s a lightweight iteration of Android Oreo that’s meant for handsets with humble specifications. It’s built to operate on smartphones that have 1GB of RAM or less. It even requires less internal storage space compared to the full-fledged Nougat. Google said that it would work with manufacturing partners to bring Android Go devices to the market. It looks like the Nokia 1 might be one of those devices.

HMD Global has released several Nokia models ever since it licensed the iconic brand name from the Finnish company. According to a new report, one of its upcoming devices is going to be an affordable model that will be called the Nokia 1.

The Nokia 1 will reportedly be launched as part of the Android Go program in March next year. Its humble specifications will include a 720p HD display, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage.

No further information is available about the handset at this point in time. The device will primarily be meant for emerging markets where affordability is a major factor that prevents many people from purchasing a decent smartphone.

As the specifications suggest, this is going to be an entry-level device, which means that it won’t be too expensive. HMD Global is expected to launch this handset in several markets across the globe starting March 2018. It may be priced around $100.

FBI’s Fingerprint Analysis Software May Have Russian Code

The FBI and over 18,000 other law enforcement agencies in the United States use a software for analyzing fingerprints that may have Russian code, according to a new report. A subsidiary of the French company Safran Group reportedly purchased the code secretly from Russian cybersecurity firm Papillon Systems. This code was then included in the fingerprint analysis software that the Safran Group subsidiary sold to the FBI back in 2011.

Buzzfeed News reports that the Russian firm has close ties to the Kremlin. The allegations that the software might have Russian code have raised concerns that hackers connected to the state could gain backdoor access to sensitive biometric information on countless U.S. citizens.

Two whistleblowers who are former employees of the French company told the scribe that the code was purchased from the Russian firm as part of a secret deal. They also add that this fact was deliberately hidden from the FBI when the deal was made to supply it with the fingerprint analysis software.

The danger of using the Russian-made code can’t be ascertained without actually examining the code but experts believe that the firm’s connections to Russia’s Federal Security Service intelligence agency are a cause for concern.

The FBI is yet to issue a detailed response to this report. In a statement provided to the scribe, it said that “As is typical for all commercial software that we operate, appropriate security reviews were completed prior to operational deployment.”
