LG and Here Technologies have announced a new partnership to create a new platform for self-driving cars. The platform will offer a next-generation telematics solution for self-driving cars. Here Technologies was a part of Nokia until 2015. This digital mapping and location services provider has a respectable pedigree and it’s now owned by a consortium that includes Mercedes, BMW, and Audi.
The platform that these companies will develop is going to combine LG’s telematics technology with map data and location services provided by Here’s Open Location Platform. They’ll provide automakers globally with a robust and secure data communications hub for both semi and fully autonomous cars.
Here’s HD Live Map technology is going to be incorporated into the platform that both companies develop. It’s capable of reading street signs and detecting objects on the road in real time. LG has said that the HD Live Map technology is going to play a pivotal role in the joint solution that the companies offer to automakers.
The tech will be able to scan the environment around a car and then sent that data to the cloud for analysis. The data will then be transmitted back to the ground in order to customize driving information for each car.
No car manufacturers have confirmed their commitment to this platform at this point in time, even though Here Technologies is now owned by three major car firms.
