Space Grey iMac Pro Accessories Spotted On eBay For $2,500

What sets the new iMac Pro apart from the regular iMac? For those who are more keenly-eyed, the lack of a back panel which on the iMac would have allowed users to swap/upgrade the RAM on the computer themselves. However we suppose the more obvious difference is that the iMac Pro is being offered in a Space Grey finish.

However it isn’t just the computer, it is its accessories as well, such as the keyboard, mouse, trackpad, and there’s even a Lightning cable that comes in black, all of which are (at the moment) exclusive to the iMac Pro. As you can imagine, this only serves to create a higher demand and it looks like these accessories are starting to pop up on eBay where they are fetching some pretty insane prices.

According to one particular listing, the iMac Pro’s keyboard, trackpad, and mouse are currently listed on eBay for a whopping $2,500. Yup, you read that right, it seems that there are some who believe that these accessories are worth that much because as it stands, you can’t buy them unless you buy the iMac Pro.

We’re doubtful that anyone in their right mind would pay $2,500 for a keyboard, mouse and trackpad just because it has a special finish, but like we said, if anything this just proves how popular it is. We expect that perhaps in the future Apple could release the accessories to non-iMac Pro customers, but for now it doesn’t seem like there is any other way to get your hands on them unless you’re willing to fork out $2,500.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Could Be Keeping The Headphone Jack

One of the concerns that smartphone users have regarding future models has to do with the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack. We’ve seen various companies do it, such as Apple and Google, and so far for the most part, Samsung has held out. In fact you might be pleased to learn that the upcoming Galaxy S9 could retain the headphone jack as well.

This is according to a photo uploaded onto Slashleaks by Dimitri12 in which the alleged USB-C flex cable component of the Galaxy S9 was revealed. Assuming the photo is accurate, it looks like the 3.5mm headphone jack is here to stay as far as the Galaxy S9 is concerned, but since this isn’t official, take it with a grain of salt for now.

That being said, we expect that at some point in time Samsung will probably make the switch. After all given that the removal does free up some space, plus USB-C is said to offer better quality audio streaming, those are some of the benefits to dropping the headphone jack. The only problem is that users who don’t have USB-C headphones or Bluetooth headsets are left hanging.

However speaking of Bluetooth headphones, we have heard rumors that Samsung could bundle Bluetooth AKG headphones, suggesting that maybe this could help make up for a lack of a headphone jack. Either way we’ll have to wait and see, but with a launch rumored to take place in February/March 2018, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

64GB Nintendo Switch Game Cards Possibly Delayed To 2019

One of the interesting choices that Nintendo made with the Nintendo Switch was to use memory cards as game cards/cartridges. However this kept the footprint small, which is important when you consider that the Switch was designed to be played on the go, but the problem was that compared to Blu-ray discs, storage isn’t quite as huge.

However Nintendo had plans to launch game cards with bigger storage capacities, such as a 64GB game card, but according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, that rollout might have been delayed. The report claims that according to people familiar with the matter, Nintendo has delayed launching 64GB game cards for the Switch in 2018, and instead it could be launched in 2019.

What this means is that developers who might have game file sizes larger than 32GB won’t be able to fit all of the data onto the card. An alternative would be that the core game files could be stored on the game card, and the rest downloaded over the internet and stored on the Switch or a memory card. The only downside is that it will require an internet connection, which in some cases might not always be possible, especially when gamers just want to plug in and play straight away.

That being said none of this is official information yet so take it with a grain of salt.

Xiaomi’s ‘Super VIP’ Subscription Program Removes Ads From MIUI

Imagine pay full-price and buying a DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie or video game, and whenever you watch it or play it ads pop up from time to time. How miffed would you be? Unfortunately that’s something that Xiaomi users have had to live with thanks to the ads Xiaomi included in its MIUI custom ROM that they install on their phones.

However it seems that Xiaomi could be having a change of heart, or at least give users the option to remove the ads if they’re willing to pay for it. According to GizmoChina, the company has recently announced the launch of the “Super VIP” program over in China, where for a monthly subscription fee, ads will be removed from MIUI along with other features.

This includes to downloading 1,000 books per month, 5GB of cloud storage, and access to 22 exclusive themes. This is priced at around RMB 9 per month, or alternatively RMB 88 a year which will also give users access to 10GB of cloud storage, access to 37 exclusive themes, and 1,200 book downloads.

Whether or not this will be worth it for users remains to be seen, but we’re sure that not many are too thrilled with the idea of having to pay a recurring fee on top of the price of the phone that they’ve already paid.

IBM Uses AI To Help Keep This Zoo’s Heating Costs Down

Keeping the heater or air-con running all day is no doubt a pretty quick way to rack up a massive electricity bill. This is multiplied many times over in commercial/larger settings, like for example at a zoo where they need to run both heaters and air-con depending on the climate that they’re trying to maintain for the animals.

However thanks to IBM, the Marwell Zoo in Hampshire will hopefully be able to reduce its heating costs as the company is planning on using AI to help the heater run more efficiently. At the moment the zoo relies on infrared heaters installed above the bedding areas of their animal houses, and these heaters are typically left on throughout the night.

According to the zoo in a video by the BBC, they estimate that about a third of their electricity bill comes from just heating alone. However with the use of AI, infrared sensors, and a Raspberry Pi, IBM has managed to create a device that can detect when the animals are in their enclosures and thus turn the heating on, since keeping the heating on when no animals are present is a waste of electricity.

That being said, this is just a step towards creating a smarter heating system for animals. The next step according to the BBC video is looking at how the animals react to such a system, such as whether or not the turning on/off of the heater might have an impact on their behavior and sleeping habits.

Microsoft patent explains the why and how of foldable phones

It’s not just enough to make phones that fold out into a tablet and vice versa. That has done before, with the Kyocera Echo and more recently the ZTE Axon M. And both show exactly why we still don’t have such ideal foldable phones available. That hasn’t stopped both tech companies and tech users from dreaming. Microsoft, whom people have … Continue reading

Nokia 2 is cheap but not cheaply built

Cheap, affordable phones have earned quite a bad rep, sometimes unwarranted. You often make a lot more compromises than you’d like to keep things within budget, and one of the biggest to suffer is the build quality and durability. There are, of course, exceptions, and it seems that HMD Global has provided one such shining example. The Nokia 2, the … Continue reading

WhatsApp Threatened With Legal Action Over Middle Finger Emoji

Context is an important thing, where what might be considered offensive to some might not be considered offensive to someone else. For example if you were to call your friend a name jokingly, you guys might laugh it off, but say it to a complete stranger and it’s suddenly a very different story.

The same could be said about emojis, where sending a close group of friends the middle finger emoji could be seen as a joke, but unfortunately not everyone’s laughing. Over in India, WhatsApp has been served a legal notice by a local lawyer over the middle finger emoji. The lawyer claims that the emoji is an obscene and lewd gesture, and apparently falls under India’s law regarding “obscene, lewd, offensive gestures”.

The lawyer, Gurmeet Singh, in his notice to WhatsApp reads, “As per the Indian Penal Code Sections 354 and 509, it is an offence to show obscene, lewd, offensive gestures to females. Use of a lewd, offensive, obscene gesture by anyone is hereby illegal also as aforesaid. As per section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 showing of the middle finger is also an offence in Ireland.”

He adds, “By offering to use middle finger emoji in your app, you (WhatsApp) are directly abetting the use of offensive, lewd, obscene gesture.” To that end, Singh is asking that WhatsApp remove the emoji within the next 15 days from the date they receive the notice, otherwise he will be filing civil or even criminal cases against the company. WhatsApp has yet to comment on the notice.
