A rumor surfaced today claiming that Apple will tap MediaTek for 2018 iPhone modems in an effort to distance itself from Qualcomm. Apple and Qualcomm are in the middle of a fierce legal fight that has, among other things, seen Qualcomm attempt to block some iPhone imports in the US. The potential partnership, should it actually happen, would follow Apple’s … Continue reading

When the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were launched, it’s safe to say that things did not look too good in terms of sales, where we were hearing many reports about lukewarm responses to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. It was speculated that this is because many were waiting for the iPhone X to be released, thus holding back on purchasing the iPhone 8 instead.
However according to a report from CIRP, it could be something else instead. According to their report which breaks down the number of iPhones sold, it seems that the iPhone X accounts for about 30% of iPhones sold in 2017, whereas the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus accounted for 40%, indicating that despite initial reports, these phones are selling better than the iPhone X.
CIRP’s report is based on sales 30 days following the launch of the iPhone X, which could suggest that perhaps consumers weren’t that impressed with the iPhone X and decided to opt for the cheaper iPhone 8 and 8 Plus handsets instead. Interestingly enough the breakdown also suggests that at least as far as the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are concerned, the smaller iPhone 7 is considerably more popular than the Plus model both in 2016 and 2017.
Note that these figures aren’t 100% official as Apple has yet to disclose them, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

While people might give Apple a lot of flak for being late to doing certain things or including certain features in their products, the company was also known for a lot of “firsts”. This included creating a computer with an operating system that sported a graphical user interface in the form of the Apple Lisa.
The computer was released back in 1983, nearly 35 years ago, and now it looks like the Computer History Museum has plans to release the operating system found on the Lisa as a free open source platform. What this means is that if you’re interested in taking the platform for a spin and check it out for yourself, you’ll be able to as the Museum will be releasing the source code behind it.
Exactly what will come of this remains to be seen, but it could be an interesting history lesson or just for fans who want to see what Apple were like back in the day, or just developers who love tinkering around in general. The Lisa, for those unfamiliar, was pretty much a flop despite it being one of the first of its kind.
The computer cost $10,000 back in the day, which according to Business Insider when you factor in inflation, means that it will cost around $24,000 by today’s standards. This is versus other computers offered by IBM that were considerably cheaper, with Apple only managing to sell 10,000 units after 3 years.

Earlier this month, OnePlus announced the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition, which is basically the OnePlus 5T except with some slight tweaks to its design and also some additional Star Wars content that is preloaded on the phone. However it seems like OnePlus wants to encourage customers to purchase it and have announced a rewards program.
This rewards program is only applicable to the first 37 people who purchase the phone, in which together with Star Register, OnePlus will name a star in the galaxy after the 37 customers who purchased the phone (one star per customer). While it isn’t necessarily a material reward, we guess having a star in the galaxy named after you is actually pretty cool, and it does fit into the whole Star Wars/space theme that they’re going for.
Customers will also receive a personalized Star Wars constellation along with a certificate that proves that the star has been named after them. That being said, note that the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition handset is limited to a handful of markets which means that it isn’t available in all markets that the regular OnePlus 5T is, so depending on where you are from, you might not be able to participate in this rewards program.

Huawei has certainly over the years made a name for itself when it comes to Android phones, and we imagine that they have made a few fans over the years who might be interested to see what the company could be up to in 2018. Thanks to a recently obtained roadmap by the folks at Gadgety (via XDA), we might have an idea.
According to the leaked roadmap, it seems that the company has actually quite a few devices planned for the early part of the year. This includes the launch of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Lite, the Honor 1, along with devices codenamed Maya and Salina. There is also mention of other Huawei devices like the B618, the Huawei A2 Band, the Huawei Scale, and a 360 Camera.
In Q2 2018, the company allegedly has plans to launch the Huawei P, P Plus, and the P Lite, the Honor 2, and a device called the B525. We’re also looking at that launch of the Honor 3 in Q3, and the Honor 4 in Q4 2018, along with the Mate Pro and Mate Lite. Do take this information with a grain of salt for now since it can’t be guaranteed that what we are seeing is the real deal.
However we do know that the company does have plans to launch in the US with carriers as their partners, so that much we know will be happening.

If there is one drawback to using Bluetooth speakers or headphones is that when it comes to watching videos, you might notice some latency issues, where the audio might come later than the video, resulting in a video where you see the character’s lips/mouth move, but the audio comes in a few milliseconds later.
However it seems that the Google Home Max is having the opposite effect, where plugging in directly to the speakers actually results in latency problems. This was initially reported by Variety where it they discovered that plugging in a device like a set of turntables or another source of music through the aux input on the Home Max results in a slight delay when audio is played.
The delay isn’t too big and is roughly a few milliseconds, which is completely fine if all you want to do is listen to music. However as Variety points out, this can be a problem if you want to use it for mixing songs and juggling beats as a DJ, where you need to get the timing right and having it delayed even by a few milliseconds can throw you off.
In a statement provided by a Google spokesperson, they are aware of the issue but it doesn’t seem like there are plans to address it. “We’re aware of a slight delay with aux-in. The delay is in regards to how long it takes for the music to start playing, and does not affect synchronization of sound across home devices – which is near perfect for most setups.”
