WhatsApp To End Support For BB10, Windows Phone 8 On Dec 31, 2017

Back before iOS and Android pretty much dominated the smartphone landscape, there were several other mobile platforms in play as well, such as BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone. This meant that developers had to release apps on more than just two platforms, but like we said, given iOS and Android’s dominance, it isn’t surprising that support for other platforms is being dropped.

Just as a reminder, this includes WhatsApp for users on either BB10 or Windows Phone 8 handsets. Last year WhatsApp announced that they would be ending support for those platforms in the middle of 2017, but they later had a change of heart when they decided to extend support until end of the year.

However it looks like there will be no more extensions as support will officially end in the next few days, as noted on WhatsApp’s blog. It is actually interesting that WhatsApp will be ending their support when BlackBerry themselves have recently announced that they will be extending support for BB10 for an additional two years.

Then again we can imagine that the number of users on BB10 and Windows Phone 8 is probably too low for WhatsApp to commit their resources to either platform, at least based on the current state of things.

Belkin Halts Sales Of iPhone X Screen Protector Following Complaints

A couple of months ago, Apple confirmed that out-of-warranty repairs for the iPhone X’s screen will cost customers close to $300. This means that investing in a protective case or a screen protector might be a cheaper investment. Naturally many companies have since launched accessories of their own, including Belkin.

Unfortunately for customers who might have bought the company’s InvisGlass Ultra screen protector for the iPhone X, it looks like the company has temporarily halted the sales of the accessory following customer complaints. One customer wrote on Belkin’s website, “I loved the glass feel and everything was fine until a couple days ago when I lightly tapped on the top portion of the screen with my pen and it cracked! There are 3 crack lines coming from the initial crack point. I am very disappointed in the durability of this product to say the least.”

Belkin had initially denied any issues with the screen protector, but they have since changed their tune. In a statement provided to MacRumors, “We have been constantly testing this product since we released the first generation of it timed to iPhone X availability and things have evolved since you and I last spoke. We identified some improvements to be made in the next generation of this product.”

It is not known if Belkin has plans to refund existing customers, or allow them to swap their screen protectors for the newer and “improved” model, but hopefully they will.

Nintendo Switch’s Online Paid Subscription Could Launch Fall 2018

With the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has certainly changed some of the ways they do business. One of those ways is an online subscription program similar to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, where gamers are required to pay a monthly subscription fee to enjoy online multiplayer gaming and other features.

The feature has yet to be launched and was originally scheduled for a release this year, but that has yet to happen. However it looks like the feature could have been delayed further and might now only be launched in the fall of 2018. This is according to a report from Wccftech in which the information was spotted on Nintendo’s Italian website.

The information (translated) reads, “You’ll be able to play compatible co-op and competitive games online by signing in with your Nintendo Account. Online play is free for Nintendo Account holders until our paid online service launches in 2018.” Given that this was the Italian website, it is unclear if this new timeframe is applicable to just the EU, or if Nintendo is planning on the feature going live at the same time for all users.

In case you might have forgotten, Nintendo had previously confirmed the pricing of its online subscription where it will cost $3.99 a month for a month-to-month subscription, $7.99 for 3-months upfront, or $19.99 for a 12-month membership upfront.

Apple Patent Hints At Navigation System For Autonomous Vehicles

Self-driving cars come equipped with a variety of sensors and cameras, all of which have been designed to help it navigate roads, make turns, identify people or obstacles in its way, and so on. However according to Autoblog, it seems that Apple might have a potentially more efficient way of teaching self-driving cars how to navigate roads.

In a recently discovered patent dubbed “Autonomous Navigation System,” it describes a system in which the self-driving car will be able to navigate roads based on past driving experiences driven by a human. Basically after a route has been driven enough times based on its “confidence indicator”, the car will then be capable of driving that route itself. If you’ve ever played Mario Kart before and tried those timed laps with “ghosts”, you could think of this patent in a similar way, except with self-driving cars.

Of course the car won’t just drive and follow the route blindly and according to the patent, “can adapt to changes in a route independently of preexisting route characterizations, ‘maps,’ etc., including independently of data received from a remote service, system, etc., thereby reducing the amount of time required to enable autonomous navigation of the changed route.”

That being said, the patent was filed in 2015 and it is unclear if Apple might have adopted it into its current self-driving system, or if it was merely an idea that they toyed with but never implemented.

New G.I. Joe Movie Confirmed For 2020

The last time we saw a G.I. Joe movie was back in 2013, which means that it has been about 4 years since. However if you’re looking forward to a third G.I. Joe movie, you’re going to have to wait a couple more years, but the good news is that at least it has been confirmed, according to a report from Deadline.

According to the report, Paramount has announced a handful of new movies that will be released in 2020 and 2021, with a G.I. Joe movie confirmed for 2020 which means that fans will have a couple of years left to wait before it is released. Not much is known about the movie for now, including the casting, so we’ll have to wait and see.

What’s interesting is that Paramount’s announcement seems to be forming the basis of a potential Hasbro Cinematic Universe. G.I. Joe is under the Hasbro umbrella, along with Micronauts which is also scheduled for 2020. Paramount also announced a new Dungeons & Dragons film for 2021 (D&D is under Wizards of the Coast, which in turn is also under Hasbro), followed by a fourth unnamed Hasbro film that is also scheduled for the later part of 2021.

Given that Hasbro has many well-known toys and franchises under their name, no doubt that these movies are something that fans are probably looking forward to in the next few years.

OnePlus 5T Face Unlock Might Have Infringed On A Patent

One of the features on the OnePlus 5T is the Face Unlock feature. While it isn’t necessarily on the same level as the iPhone X’s Face ID, it is an alternative security tool for users who want to use it. Unfortunately it seems that the feature might have run afoul of one of the patents owned by a company called SensibleVision.

In a report from MySmartPrice (via PhoneArena), the feature could have infringed on the company’s patent. Speaking to the publication, the CEO and co-founder of SensibleVision George Brostoff was quoted as saying, “We have not licensed our patents to OnePlus or their supplier. From the video on Forbes, they are likely infringing at the very least on our illumination patent.”

Brostoff also goes on to add that in addition to the Face Unlock feature, OnePlus could have also infringed upon other patents in the phone, such as using the phone’s display as an illuminator, which he claims that other companies might have potentially infringed upon as well, not just OnePlus.

That being said, it is unclear as to what SensibleVision plans to do about this. Brostoff claims that legal process is usually seen as a last resort, and that they would prefer if they could work with OnePlus on resolving it amicably as partners. Whether or not OnePlus takes SensibleVision up on their offer remains to be seen as the company has yet to comment on the matter.

Google Phases Out Legacy Recommendations On Android TV

Google is a company with many products and services under its umbrella, with some products being focused on more than others. An example would be Android, in which unsurprisingly Google is giving it a lot of attention given how we are so reliant on our mobile phones these days, and also how Android is the most dominant smartphone OS.

However Google also has other products such as Android TV, which only at this year’s Google I/O did the company announce their plans for a major redesign of the platform (finally). To that end, it seems that Google will be phasing out legacy recommendations on Android TV, which is basically part of the home screen ever since its inception.

According to Google, “Over the next year, we will phase out the automatic generation of channels. Instead of generating multiple channels, one for each app’s legacy recommendations, we will insert one channel for all legacy recommendations. This channel will appear at the bottom of the channel list. Users can move or remove it. When a user upgrades to Android O, the previous recommendation row from Android N (and below) becomes a channel at the bottom of the home screen.”

That being said, we have to wonder with these changes could it hint at Google’s plan for more Android TV devices in the future?

College Students Design Browser Plug-In That Detects Fake News

Fake news is becoming a huge problem and many companies know it. Companies such as Facebook are working on ways to help users identify fake news, and recently during a hackathon held at Yale University, a group of college students managed to develop a browser plug-in that detects fake news that you encounter on the internet.

The plug-in which is dubbed “Open Mind” was developed by Michael Lopez-Brau, Stefan Uddenberg, Alex Cui, and Jeff An, all of whom hail from different universities and also from different fields of studies. What the plug-in does is that when it detects a website that is known to contain fake news, it will display a warning to users, kind of like how Google warns users when they’re about to enter a website that might have malware on it.

However it doesn’t just stop there as it will also use what is known as sentiment analysis technology. This helps to analyze and identify major players and political slants, and will then be able to offer up stories on the same topic that have a different viewpoint. According to An, “So let’s say there is an article that is very pro-Trump on a topic. We would then try to give you something more left of centre. We can go out and find for you that alternative article.”

However at the same time the group is also trying to avoid extreme points of view, where if you are reading a far-left article, it won’t try to offer you a far-right article as a counterpoint. For more information about the extension whose beta is planned for early 2018, head on over to its website.

Alleged Fujifilm X-H1 Specs Revealed, Aimed At Videographers

While Fujifilm’s cameras have been highly-regarded when it comes to still photos, the company isn’t exactly known for their video. Instead it seems that what many videographers and vloggers seem to prefer is either Sony or the Panasonic Lumix GH5, at least in more recent times. However Fujifilm might want to change that perception.

A report from FujiAddict from a couple of weeks ago revealed the existence of an upcoming Fujifilm camera called the X-H1, which is apparently a camera aimed at videographers, at least based on the alleged specs. This includes IBIS (in-body image stabilization), 4K video at 30fps, HD video at 120fps, a sub monochrome LCD monitor, a deeper hand grip, and it is said to be dust and weather resistant.

A follow-up report from PhotoRumors has added more details about the alleged device, such as how its design is said to resemble the Fuji GFX, but will be smaller like the X-T2. It is also rumored to cost between $1,900 to $2,000, but it is unclear if this is the body-only price or the price that comes with a kit lens.

Given that this is supposed to be an X-series camera, presumably it should play nicely with Fujifilm’s lineup of XF lenses, but we’ll have to wait and see. No word on a launch date but it has been pegged for a 2018 launch, but until we get the official word do take it with a grain of salt.
