Subaru’s Crosstrek is a small but value-packed SUV

Subaru sells emotion. Their entire marketing strategy is about “love,” which is actually a pretty accurate take on how we buy cars. There’s very little logic in a lot of our buying decisions. Consider how much time some of us spend in our vehicles –…

Comcast Reportedly Signed Up Users For A Deceptive Plan Without Consent

Comcast doesn’t have the best of reputations and recent reports are not going to help the company improve its image. According to reports, the company signed up users for a deception protection plan without their consent. The plan in question is called the Service Protection Plan or SPP. It costs users $6 per month. The plan apparently provides little to no value for $6 per month.

The reports stem from an amendment to an existing lawsuit against Comcast that was filed last year. A statement by the Attorney General of Washington mentions that the plan’s mandate extends to a diagnosis of the program. It doesn’t do much to actually cut down the cost of repairs for the customer.

“[The plan] simply covers the technician visiting the customer’s house and declaring that the customer’s equipment is broken,” the statement mentions.

The lawsuit against Comcast has been amended to claim that Comcast signed up many of its customers in the Washington area for the Service Protection Plan without their consent. Most of the calls to customers in which representatives tried to sell them this plan reportedly never mentioned the SPP.

Others allegedly told customers that the plan was being added to their accounts for free. Some reports even suggest that even customers who explicitly refused to sign up for this program ended up being signed up by Comcast reps anyway.

The Attorney General now believes that Comcast has violated the state’s Consumer Protection Act “over 1.8 million times,” adding that these types of deceptive practices were discovered in more than 50 percent of a random sample of SSP enrollments that were reviewed by the state.

Facebook Messenger Malware Secretly Mines Monero Digital Currency

As if websites trying to hijack visitors’ CPUs to mine digital currency wasn’t enough, a new report suggests that hackers have created malware that targets Facebook Messenger users in order to secretly mine the Monero digital currency. The malware is called Digmine and it was discovered by researchers at the Trend Micro cybersecurity firm. They claim that the malware is targeting as many machines as possible in order to mine Monero.

The researchers have also expressed concerns that the malware could enable attackers to completely take over a Facebook account.

The malware has been designed to look like a video file, according to Trend Micro, and that it only works when it’s spread using the desktop version of Facebook Messenger on Google Chrome.

If the infected file is opened via Messenger on another platform such as a mobile device, the malware won’t function so it will cause no harm.

Nevertheless, it still remains a risk as it can potentially enable hackers to take over the victim’s account. It may also slow down the machine and even use the victim’s Facebook account to target their friends.

“If the user’s Facebook account is set to log in automatically, Digmine will manipulate Facebook Messenger in order to send a link to the file to the account’s friends,” Trend Micro researchers claim.

Facebook Messenger users should certainly be careful about the links that they open. If they’ve received one from someone they don’t know, it’s always best to exercise caution.
