Uber Wished A Happy Puerto Rican Flag Day With An Image Of The Cuban Flag

It’s not uncommon for companies to make social media gaffes and they tend to be quite embarrassing. Case in point, Uber tried to wish its followers a happy Puerto Rican Flag Day over the weekend. There was only one problem with the image it shared. The image didn’t show the Puerto Rican flag. It showed the flag of a completely different country.

Users on Twitter were quick to point out the mistake to the company, that it was trying to congratulate Puerto Rico with an image of the Cuban flag.

If that wasn’t embarrassing enough, the image’s description on Shutterstock explicitly mentioned that it was the Cuban flag. “View on the window with the Cuban flag” is the description of that image on Shutterstock. Not that hard to miss now, is it?

The wrong image was tweeted by Uber Puerto Rico and also shared on a Facebook post. Both have since been deleted by the company as word of this social media gaffe spread.

While the Cuban and Puerto Rican flags do have similarities in that both are red, white, and blue. Both also have a star and stripes. However, this could have easily been avoided if the person responsible for this post had just read the Shutterstock description carefully.

Uber has since apologized for the gaffe. “The flag was mistakenly posted and removed as soon as we realized the mistake. We are very sorry for this human error that occurred today. Our deepest apologies to the people of Puerto Rico. We reaffirm our commitment to the Island and ensure that this situation will not happen again,” it said.

Bulletproof Graphene Becomes Harder On Impact

Graphene has contributed significantly to the advancement of material science. It’s just a very tight sheet of Carbon atoms that’s thinner than a sheet of paper but it has great physical properties. Researchers continue to dig deeper in order to reveal more applications of this versatile material. They have now created a bulletproof graphene material that actually becomes harder than diamonds on impact with a fast-moving object like bullets.

This bulletproof suit material with graphene has been created by scientists at the Advanced Science Research Centre at the City University of New York. It becomes harder than diamonds on impact with a fast-moving object like a bullet.

They created this material by layering sheets of graphene which was then used to make a bulletproof suit. They used an atomistic computer for simulations of impact in order to model potential outcomes when two sheets of graphene in a honeycomb layer are subjected to sudden and high pressure.

They tested the theory using an atomic force microscope to study sheets of graphene grown on plates of silicon carbide to figure out what happens to them when pressure is applied.

The material is called diamene and it’s thinner than aluminum foil. It switches on impact immediately, which makes it very effective at stopping bullets. The researchers found that this transition does not occur if more than two layers of graphene are used or if there’s just a single layer.

“This is the thinnest film with the stiffness and hardness of diamond ever created,” said Elisa Riedo, professor of physics at the ASRC and the lead researcher on this project.

“Our new technique allows us to manipulate graphite so that it can take on the beneficial properties of a diamond under specific conditions,” said Angelo Bongiorno, associate professor of chemistry at CUNY College of Staten Island. He’s also a part of this research team.

NVIDIA Will Soon End 32-Bit OS Support

Even though 64-bit systems have become the norm, there are still many people and organizations that are using legacy machines with 32-bit operating systems. It’s not avoidable for some people as they have to run 16-bit or 32-bit applications that are not supposed on 64-bit systems. However, if they rely on NVIDIA hardware, they might have to think about updating their machines. NVIDIA has announced that it will soon end support for 32-bit operating systems.

NVIDIA has confirmed that after Version 390 of its graphics card driver it’s not going to release any drivers for 32-bit operating systems for any GPU architecture. It reiterates that drivers released after the aforementioned version will not operate and install on 32-bit operating systems.

Driver enhancements and optimizations as well as operating system features in driver versions released after Version 390 will not be incorporated back into Version 390 or earlier versions. This decision impacts 32-bit versions of Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1, Windows 10, Linux, and FreeBSD.

The company does mention that it intends to support criticial driver security fixes until January 2019.

Users who are still running a 32-bit system and also require drivers for their NVIDIA graphics cards will now have to think about upgrading their machines as soon as possible.

Facebook’s New Tool Help Users Check If They’ve ‘Liked’ Fake Russian Accounts

Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to tell which pages or people you follow on Facebook are who they say they are. Sometimes fan accounts have been designed to look like the official page of your favorite celebrity, which is why sometimes you might end up following “fake” accounts unknowingly.

Now you might recall that last month, Facebook announced that they would be letting users know if the accounts they follow are fake accounts setup by Kremlin-back group “Internet Research Agency”, and now it looks like the tool is live for users who want to double check if they might have accidentally followed such accounts.

That being said, its usefulness might be a bit limited. It has been pointed out that this tool only works if you have liked or followed pages on Facebook or Instagram directly. This means that any propaganda that is posted onto your News Feed doesn’t count, although to be fair Facebook has another tool that identifies fake news on your News Feed.

The propaganda spread by the Internet Research Agency is said to have a wider reach than previously thought, where it might have reached as many as 126 million users, despite the initial claims that it had only reached 10 million users.
