Edward Snowden Launches Smartphone App That Protects Your Laptop

Whether or not your laptop contains sensitive information, having it stolen is obviously something that all of us want to avoid if possible. While there are ways to protect the contents on your laptop, there’s really not much that can be done after it has been stolen physically, but former NSA contractor Edward Snowden has a plan to help with that.

Snowden has recently launched an Android app called Haven that is meant to act as a security tool for your laptop to prevent it from being physically stolen, or at least it will try. How it plans to accomplish that is through the use of your phone’s sensors, such as the microphone, motion detector, light detector, its camera, and so on.

These sensors will monitor the room for changes, logging everything that happens. According to The Intercept’s Micah Lee, “Here’s how Haven might work. You lock your laptop in a hotel safe — not a secure move on its own — and place your Haven phone on top of it. If someone opens the safe while you’re away, the phone’s light meter might detect a change in lighting, its microphone might hear the safe open (and even the attacker speak), its accelerometer might detect motion if the attacker moves the laptop, and its camera might even capture a snapshot of the attacker’s face.”

Of course Haven could be used for other things as well, such as monitoring your baby or just a room in general. The best part is that the information captured by Haven is not sent to third-party servers, meaning that users won’t have to worry about being spied on.

Amazon Acquires Connected Camera Startup Blink

Several years ago Blink launched its security camera on Kickstarter and the company has found a fair bit of success ever since, and actually launched a couple of new products earlier this year at CES. Now it seems that Blink has managed to catch the eye of Amazon because in an announcement by Amazon, they have acquired Blink.

For those who are unfamiliar with Blink, they are a startup that has so far launched several connected devices, such as home security cameras and also a doorbell. While smart doorbells aren’t exactly new, what makes Blink’s products different is that the doorbell is powered by just two AA batteries.

This is expected to last users as long as two years, and for $99 it is also cheaper than some of the competitors out there. The company’s products also seem to fit in nicely with the future that Amazon has planned for itself, such as Amazon Key which relies on connected devices like smart cameras and door locks to allow delivery people to enter your home (temporarily) to drop off packages when you’re out.

For now Blink is expected to continue operating as is, meaning that Blink customers don’t need to worry about support for their products to suddenly stop. Whether or not this will continue into the future remains to be seen.

CNN Cancels ‘The Update’ Show On Snapchat

While Snapchat might have started out as an app that allowed users to send timed messages to each other, the platform has grown into its own where many brands have started to use the platform to debut original shows and content. CNN was one of those who took advantage of Snapchat’s popularity to launch a show called “The Update”.

Unfortunately it looks like CNN’s plans for the show are short-lived as the media outlet has since cancelled the show. The show made its debut in August which means that it has been in existence for less than half a year. CNN has yet to reveal the reasons behind the cancellation, but it is said to have to do with money.

The Wall Street Journal who first broke the story quotes people familiar with the matter as claiming that “there wasn’t a clear path to make money”.  It is rather unfortunate given that CNN was one of Snapchat’s launch partners for the Discover feature.

In a joint statement provided by both companies, “Snap and CNN have built a great partnership over the years and our teams have enormous admiration for each other. We plan to keep working together and mutually decided to hit pause as we explore the best opportunities for doing that.”

Pixel 2 Beats Out The Competition In LTE Speed Test

While on the surface and on paper, most flagship phones these days seem identical, there are underlying differences that can set phones apart from each other in ways that you might not even realize. Recently a test published by PC Mag has revealed that when it comes to LTE speeds on our smartphones, the Pixel 2 could be worth considering.

The test was conducted by Cellular Insights which pitted phones like the Pixel 2, the iPhone X, Galaxy Note 8, and the LG V30 against each other in an LTE speed test, and based on their findings the Pixel 2 walked away the winner. Cellular Insights based their test on LTE Band 4 in 2×2 MIMO mode, starting at -85dBm (this measures signal strength) which carried on until the phones lost the connection.

Also what’s interesting is that in the tests, they compared the Intel-based iPhone X against the Qualcomm iPhone X, and it is clear that the Qualcomm model performs better, which might have some a bit concerned about future iPhones which are said to move away from Qualcomm to Intel.

That being said, LTE speeds are just one aspect of a phone that users should take into account, and also note that these are based on carriers in the US. If you live outside the US then the results could be different. Whether or not these speeds are noticeable in your day-to-day use will also depend on your location and also the reception, but if LTE speeds are important to you then the Pixel 2 seems like the phone to get.

Chrome For Android Could Soon Get Double Tap To Fast Forward/Rewind

One of the nifty features that Google has brought to the YouTube app is the ability to allow users to fast forward or rewind videos by double tapping at either sides of the video. The good news is that if you liked that feature and didn’t want it to be limited to just the YouTube app, it looks like it could be coming to Chrome on Android soon.

In a post on XDA by Mishaal Rahman, he has discovered a few new commits in the open source Chromium gerrit that suggests that this double tapping feature could be coming to Chrome on Android in the future, where it means adding the double tap recognition to media control overlay.

This means that video played in the Chrome browser on Android could soon let users double tap to fast forward or rewind videos, which should make shipping through videos a lot more convenient than trying to scrub the video using your finger. Rahman notes that this feature can actually be enabled on the latest builds of Chrome for Android which requires that users use the Chrome Canary build (v65.0.3301.0) or a comparable Chromium build.

For users who are interested (proceed at your own risk), just type “chrome://flags#enable-modern-media-controls” inside your browser’s address bar minus the quotes and it should be enabled. We expect that Google will eventually roll this feature out to users on a wider scale at a later date, but as of now we have no idea when that will be.

Galaxy X Listed On Samsung’s Website Turns Out To Be A Rugged Smartphone

We have been hearing reports that Samsung is getting ready to launch a truly flexible/foldable smartphone in the form of the Samsung Galaxy X. In fact just last month, the handset in question was spotted on Samsung’s website which no doubt raised some eyebrows, but as it turns out this isn’t the phone we were looking for.

According to a report from Mobielkopen (via PhoneArena), it seems that the Galaxy X SM-G888N0 is a rugged smartphone. This was actually confirmed by Samsung in their press release about installing LTE-R internet in South Korea’s high-speed trains. “Samsung has provided its radio access network operating in 700 MHz, a global band for LTE-based Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR), a dedicated core network including EPC, IMS and PTT servers deployed in two control centers, as well as rugged smartphones (SM-G888N0) for professionals.” (emphasis by us)

Unfortunately details about the phone are unknown at this point in time, but Samsung has pretty much confirmed that this is a rugged handset aimed at professionals, as opposed to the flexible phone that we have been hearing about. We’re not sure if Samsung plans on using the Galaxy X moniker the phone or if it could still be used for the flexible phone, but we know that the company had previously filed for a trademark for it.

Some are claiming that Samsung’s flexible phone is expected to arrive in 2018 but we have been hearing such rumors for a while now, and whether or not 2018 will be the year in question remains to be seen.

The iPhone X’s Face ID Can’t Authorize Family Purchases

We have heard various horror stories of how kids have knowingly/unknowingly abused their parents’ credit cards by purchasing apps or in-app purchases for games or apps and racking up a massive bill. One of the ways that Apple has tried to fix this is with family purchases, where all purchases typically go through one member of the family.

This has worked out pretty well so far, but it seems that according to reports, this seems to have run into an issue with the iPhone X and in particular the phone’s new security feature: Face ID. Users are reporting that they are unable to authorize family purchases using Face ID, whereas in the past they were able to use Touch ID.

Apple has yet to comment on the reason behind this, but ArsTechnica has noted that it could be due to security concerns. When Apple announced Face ID, they also announced a small caveat which is that in some instances, Face ID could fail when it comes to telling twins apart, or family members that bear a strong resemblance to each other, an issue that has actually been proven true before.

It is possible that because of this, Apple has disabled Face ID for authorizing family purchases to avoid issues like that from cropping up in the future. It’s not necessarily a huge deal, but having to enter your password everytime can get a bit tedious. We’re not sure if there are plans to address this in the future, but for now it’s something users with Family Sharing setup will want to take note of.
