Galaxy J2 (2018) is coming for those who don’t need the fluff

Just this week, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A8 and A8+ 2018 editions, which was expected to happen next month at CES. But, also as expected, it was pretty much like the Galaxy S8 Lite. Not everyone, however, is enamored by the new 18:9 (or 18.5:9 in Samsung’s case) screens, glass backs, and high price tags. For those consumers, Samsung still … Continue reading

Huawei Honor 9 Lite launches with 18:9 screen, four cameras

Honor might be seen as Huawei’s mid-range sub-brand but it is quickly shedding of that image. The Honor V10 and the Honor 7X before it all brought with them almost high-end specs that rivaled Huawei’s own flagships. Not everyone, however, will be able to afford those phones. Fortunately, Honor has not forgotten its core market and has announced the Honor … Continue reading

The Morning After: Friday, December 22nd 2017

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

As we prepare for the holiday break, there’s some surprising news from Google’s parent company and our big smartphone camera head-to-head competition.

Zelda’s Champion’s Ballad DLC Marks The End Of Breath Of The Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of 2017’s best games and with it, we saw Nintendo do things to the Zelda franchise which they have never done before, such as introducing DLCs. The game’s second DLC, Champion’s Ballad, was released not too long ago and for those wondering about the future of the franchise, wonder no more.

In a recent interview with Famitsu (via Japanese Nintendo; via Nintendo Life), Zelda’s producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed that with the release of the second DLC, the game is now “complete” and it marks the end of Breath of the Wild. This means that gamers probably shouldn’t expect anymore DLCs or new content for the game in general.

However the good news is that if you recall, a report from several days ago seemed to have confirmed that a new Zelda title is already in development. It is unclear as to how far into development the title is, but the upside is that it is already being worked on, so presumably we’re at least 1-2 years away from seeing it released.

Not much is known about said title, but we can imagine that Nintendo will probably want to try and replicate Breath of the Wild’s success.

Valve’s Steam Winter Sale Is Now Live

The holidays are nearly upon us and if you’re looking for some ways to pass the time during the Christmas and New Year’s break, video games could be one way to go about it. In fact if you’re a gamer, you might be interested to learn that Valve’s Steam Winter Sale is now live and will run until the 5th of January, 2018 at 2AM CST.

For those unfamiliar, every year Valve’s Steam gaming platform will host several different sales spread throughout the year, with the Winter Sale capping off the end of the year. The prices of various games have been slashed by quite a bit, depending on the title, and gamers can expect discounts up to 75%.

However like we said, this is depending on the title where games that are older tend to be discounted more, while the more popular and trendy titles aren’t as heavily discounted. That being said, discounts are discounts so if you want to save some money then perhaps the sale could be worth checking out.

That being said, even if you miss this sale, like we said, Valve tends to hold Steam sales events several times a year, so you could always wait until next year if nothing interests you at the moment.

Google Uses AI To Identify Photos It Thinks We Like

What makes a good photo? To some it could be the technicality of the shot, where the subject is perfectly exposed, edges are sharp where they need to be, and white balance is accurate. To others a good photo could be about the composition, the juxtaposition of the subject on the background, the use of contrasting colors, and so on.

That being said if even humans can’t necessarily always agree with what makes a good photo, can AI do a better job? That’s something that Google wants to try and figure out, by using convolution neural networks to help AI identify photos that we humans rate as good or attractive.

According to Google, “Our proposed network can be used to not only score images reliably and with high correlation to human perception, but also it is useful for a variety of labor intensive and subjective tasks such as intelligent photo editing, optimizing visual quality for increased user engagement, or minimizing perceived visual errors in an imaging pipeline.”

Google isn’t alone in trying to teach AI what humans might deem as attractive. Recently Adobe has pushed out an update to Lightroom in which it uses AI to help edit photos to a level that it thinks is aesthetically pleasing.

Study Finds Fake Social Media Accounts Can Be Bad For Your Health

We all know the effects that fake news spread by fake accounts can have on society, where people get upset over things that did not happen, while others panic over things that were false. However it seems that fake social media accounts can also have a negative effect on your health, and we don’t mean mental anguish or frustration.

According to research that was done by the Keck School of Medicine at USC, it seems that fake social media accounts can be bad for your health due to the misinformation that it spreads with regards to topics on health, medication, and so on. The study looked at automated bots that have been designed to help promote discussion about specific ideas and products, which when spread could be harmful due to the information potentially being false.

An example was given as to how these bots are similar to celebrities such as Jenny McCarthy who has claimed that vaccinations cause autism, despite it being proven and debunked countless times. Jon-Patrick Allem, lead author of the study said, “We now have measles outbreaks in Southern California because people shared personal stories about how vaccinations reportedly caused their child to have autism.”

“Social bots may not have the star power of Jenny McCarthy, but what they lack in fame, they make up for in quantity and determination. They are designed to promote a specific, slanted narrative — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” That being said, we have seen efforts by others to try and minimize the impact of fake news, such as by educating the young on how to spot it, as well as labelling posts that might potentially contain false information.

The iPhone X’s Face ID Is The Feature Consumers Like The Most

Apple made waves when they announced that the iPhone X would not feature a fingerprint scanner, but would instead feature facial recognition in the form of Face ID. Understandably many were skeptical, but save for a few instances which one could chalk up to it being a new feature, Face ID certainly did work as promised.

In fact it seems that Face ID and the TrueDepth camera system are some of the features that consumers like the most, according to a recent study conducted by Strategy Analytics (via BGR). According to the report, “Apple’s upgraded front-facing TrueDepth camera has allowed new security and augmented reality features through Face ID and Animojis, respectively. In particular, Consumer sentiment surrounding Face ID is extremely positive.”

To a certain extent the report is true as we’ve started to see more developers take advantage of the feature, whether it being to make games or to recommend spectacle frames. We can only imagine that as time moves on, Apple will make further improvements to the feature to help iron out the kinks.

We’ve also heard that Apple has plans to potentially bring it onto the iPad, but whether or not that is true remains to be seen. In any case do you guys agree with the report, and that Face ID is one of the iPhone X’s best features?
