Apple’s Face ID Accused Of Being ‘Racist’

Apple’s Face ID is the heralded new feature of the iPhone X and is expected to be applied to future iPhones moving forwards, and possibly iPads as well (we wouldn’t rule out the possibility of its arriving on Macs either). However it seems that the feature has been hit with some controversy over in China, and is accused of being a “racist”.

This came about when a man from Shanghai bought his wife the iPhone X and discovered that it could be easily unlocked by his son. When he contacted Apple, he was told it was an isolated incident and that it could be due to his wife and son looking similar, which is actually something that we’ve seen before.

However this isn’t the only time that Face ID has been tricked to unlock by a non-authorized user. According to a report from AsiaOne a week ago, another Chinese woman had an incident with Face ID when her colleague, who was unrelated to her, managed to unlock her phone using Face ID. She was told by a customer service rep that it was “impossible”, until she took the phone to the store and proceed to demonstrate it for them.

This has prompted some to call Face ID “racist” by suggesting that all Chinese people look the same. According to Madam Wan, the colleague of the woman in question, “We look quite ordinary. What if someone picks up my phone and opens it? Then they could buy stuff through my phone and make payments. We don’t have any sense of security.”

It is unclear how Apple plans to address this, but assuming these reports are true, it’s definitely an area that Apple needs to work on.

Instagram Now Lets You Send Live Videos In Direct

If you wanted to share Instagram Stories with a friend, there is an option that lets you send that particular Story to a friend via Direct (Instagram’s in-app messaging feature), assuming that profile isn’t private. However this feature was not applicable to Live Videos, at least until now where Instagram has made some changes.

According to Instagram, “When you’re live, just tap the Direct icon at the bottom of the screen and send your live video to friends. You’ll also have this option when going live with a friend. Once sent, the recipient will see your live video in their Direct inbox. Friends can only view your video if you’re currently live. If your live video is over, your friend will see a message saying the video has ended.”

What this means is that if there is a live video that you are hosting, or if there’s a live video you think your friend might be interested in, you can notify them through Direct. This can be handy as some users might only choose to receive notifications when they get a message, versus being notified when Live Videos are taking place, so this could be useful if you don’t want them to miss out on it.

The update should already be live so head on over to your respective app stores for the download.

The game is currently priced at $30 which is actually a 50% discount on the regular asking price, although note that this is a limited time offer.

According to the app’s description, “Originally created by legendary game designer Sid Meier, Civilization is a turn-based strategy game in which you attempt to build an empire to stand the test of time. Become Ruler of the World by establishing and leading a civilization from the Stone Age to the Information Age. Wage war, conduct diplomacy, advance your culture, and go head-to-head with history’s greatest leaders as you attempt to build the greatest civilization the world has ever known.”

Facebook’s Job Ads Used To Filter Out Older Applicants

It is no secret that as you get older, getting a new job can be tougher as companies usually favor those who are younger for a variety of reasons (unless the job position in question calls for decades of experience). However discriminating against age is actually illegal, but it seems that Facebook’s job ads are being accused of just that.

In a joint investigation by ProPublica and The New York Times (via Engadget), it seems that companies are using the filters in Facebook’s ads to target potential job applicants of a certain age. As Engadget notes, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 forbids companies from having a bias against applicants who are 40 or older.

That being said, Facebook doesn’t think that anything is wrong. According to Facebook’s Rob Goldman, VP of ads, “Used responsibly, age-based targeting for employment purposes is an accepted industry practice and for good reason: it helps employers recruit and people of all ages find work.”

Note that this isn’t the first time that Facebook’s ad filters have caused the company a bit of trouble. In the past it was discovered that some ads were designed to target/exclude certain groups, resulting in Facebook hiring more human workers who will help to manually review certain ads deemed to be sensitive.

It has also been pointed out that Facebook isn’t the only one doing this. In their investigation, ProPublica found that they were able to purchase job ads from Google and LinkedIn to exclude applicants over the age of 40. LinkedIn claims to have since changed the system after they were notified to this, while Google acknowledges that they don’t prevent marketers from displaying ads based on age.
