The Kronos Lift standing desk brings a little class to getting off your chair

I’ve been following the rise of standing desks for a few years now and still use one on a daily basis. The technology hasn’t changed much in the decade or so that they’ve become truly popular but the design and quality is always improving which is why I took a look at the Kronos Lift from BDI. This is a surprisingly elegant desk with very little visible machinery –… Read More

Wearable Devices May Lose Out To Smart Speakers This Holiday Season

If wearable devices were all the industry could talk about a couple of years ago, this year it has all been about smart speakers. Major companies like Amazon and Google are competing in this space. The competition will certainly continue to grow in the new year and so will the market’s interest. A new report suggests that smart speakers are going to outsell wearable devices during the U.S. holiday season this year.

The U.S. holiday season is not just a time when people spend time with their friends and family. It’s also a time when people shop. Billions of dollars are spent on gifts for loved ones annually and the pie continues to grow each year.

The latest report from eMarketer suggests that smart speakers are going to outsell wearable devices this year. This means that the growth rate for devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers has slowed down in the United States.

The report blames the slowing growth rate on the generally high cost of wearable devices and that they’ve not yet become mainstream as customers haven’t really be sold on the idea that these are devices that they can’t really live without.

Smart speakers are predicted to be the gift of choice this holiday season due to their lower price points. eMarketer also predicts that 55 percent of U.S. households will have at least one smart speaker by 2022.

Boeing’s New Autonomous Plane Refuels Fighter Jets Midair

Fighter jets rely on midair refueling to extend their range. Militaries across the globe use airborne tankers that are capable of refueling their fighter jets while they’re airbone. Boeing has now unveiled a new kind of airborne tanker and it’s one that doesn’t require a pilot. Boeing’s new autonomous plane has been desgined to refuel U.S. Navy fighter jets midair.

The United States Navy issued a request for proposals in October as it sought unmanned refueling capabilities for many of its fighter jets. They include the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, Boeing EA-18G Growler, and the Lockheed Martin F-35C.

Interested companies have to respond to the Navy’s request by January 3rd, 2018. Boeing has revealed it’s unmanned airborne tanker entry. The autonomous plane is completing its engine runs currently and will head to the flight ramp for deck handling demonstrations in early 2018.

The airplane that’s selected has to be capable of launching and landing on aircraft carriers. It will have to work with catapult, launch, and recovery systems that are found on aircraft carriers.

Boeing’s entry is called the MQ-25 Stringray aerial tanker. The company says that it can deliver 15,000 pounds of fuel to a distance of 500 nautical miles out from an aircraft carrier. This should be enough to provide fighter jets with an additional flight range of up to 400 miles.

“Our expertise gives us confidence in our approach. We will be ready for flight testing when the engineering and manufacturing development contract is awarded,” said retired admiral Don Gaddis, he leads the refueling system program for Boeing’s Phantom Works organization.

Twitter Finally Supports App-Based Two-Factor Authentication

Twitter has offered the two-factor authentication security feature to its users for quite some time now. However, the implementation left a lot to be desired. It was the less secure SMS-based verification that its 2FA system relied upon. The company has finally released an update to its platform security which allows users to rely on third-party authentication apps for two-factor login authentication for their Twitter accounts.

There are plenty of third-party authentication apps that can be used to identify a login. These include Google Authenticator and Duo Mobile. This is considered to be safer than the old SMS-based verification system for two-factor authentication.

This is considered to be safer before there can be instances when an attacker takes over the victim’s mobile account. For example, they could just request a new SIM for the user’s account by tricking a human service agent.

It’s much more difficult to break into an authenticator app. Besides, the app will keep the layer of security in place even if the user loses access to their phone or changes their number.

Twitter has detailed the process to enable third-party app support for login verification on its website. It involves generating a QR code which will then be scanned using the third-party authenticator app.

Star Destroyer Made out of Gingerbread: Imperial Icing

Few things in this galaxy or any other are as intimidating as the sight of an Imperial Star Destroyer. If you are smuggling any contraband at all and you see one of these ships, you drop your cargo and run. You don’t hang around to become space debris. A gingerbread Star Destroyer is no less intimidating. Especially if you are a gingerbread man just hanging around in your gingerbread village. In that case, what can you do but run into your delicious house and cower in the corner, waiting to be obliterated.

Star Destroyer? More like a stomach destroyer. This massive and massively delicious spaceship comes from Star Wars Bakery. They created this truly impressive modern marvel of Christmas confectionary goodness out of nothing but gingerbread and icing. The detail of that icing is what really sells it. They did an amazing job on this creation. As you can see it has a lot of layers of gingerbread, all put together like a model. It is a holiday treat of the First Order!

If you are lucky enough to be in Stockholm, Sweden they put it up on display at the DICE office there.
