Razer today announced the addition of a new product to its Broadcaster range of professional-grade streaming equipment. It’s called the Razer Seriren Elite and it’s a professional-grade microphone for game streaming. The product aims to provide live streamers as well as YouTube broadcasters with professional-grade audio quality.

Razer Seiren Elite is a USB microphone that has a single capsule design with a built-in filter and limiter to provide richer, warmer vocal tone that’s normally possible with high-end broadcast equipment.

Its cardioid capture pattern enables accurate wide frequency recording while the built-in high-pass filter removes unwanted low-frequency vibrations like air condition hums and fan noises. There’s even a digital/analog vocal limiter which automatically adjusts audio gains to prevent distortion and popping even when the user raises their voice out of excitement.

“Most professional-grade microphones require additional recording equipment, like mixers and converters, that you need to get your sound onto your PC,” said Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, adding that the Seiren Elite solves that problem by handling the audio experience and letting broadcasters focus on their content.

It’s a simple plug and play operation so it simplifies the process for users. It doesn’t require any external mixers, amplifiers or signal converters. The Razer Seiren Elite is now available for purchase from the company’s online store for $199.99.

Mazda Claims Its Next-Gen Gas Engine Will Be As Clean As Some EVs


Many believe that the internal combustion engine is on its way out. Major car companies are heavily investing in all-electric solutions that will power the cars of the future but Mazda is not ready to give up on the internal combustion engine just yet. Mazda claims that its next-generation gas engine, the Skyactive-3, is going to be as clean as some electric cars.

Mazda powertrain chief Mitsuo Hitomi has revealed at a tech forum in Tokyo that the company’s goal with its next-generation gas engine is to increase the internal combustion engine’s thermal efficiency to around 56 percent. If it’s capable of doing that, it would make the Skyactive-3 the first engine of its kind to convert the majority of its fuel’s energy into power instead of wasting it due to heat loss and friction.

According to a report, Mazda’s 56 percent goal will post a 27 percent improvement in thermal efficiency of existing Mazda engines. It’s ambitious to say the least, and Mazda hasn’t revealed when its next-generation engine is going to enter production. The company hasn’t detailed how the engine is going to achieve such a high percentage of thermal efficiency.

Mazda claims that the engine will thus be cleaner to run than some all-electric vehicles. It basis this assertion on estimates of “well-to-wheel” emissions, which combines the pollution generated by both fossil fuel production and electricity generation to compare the emissions of electric cars and the Skyactiv-3.

The assertion holds true in markets where a significant chunk of the electricity is generated using fossil fuels but where its generated using renewable sources like wind, hydro, and solar it will be difficult to claim that the Skyactiv-3 will match EVs in that scenario as well.

Google Removed 700,000 Bad Apps From Play Store Last Year


Malware authors and attackers are particularly focused on targeting Android users given to the fragmented nature of the operating system. While it’s common for malicious apps to spread though third-party app stores, some bad actors often succeed in getting their apps listed on the Google Play Store which is the main source of apps for a vast majority of Android users. Google revealed today that as part of its ongoing commitment to ensure safety for Android users, it removed 700,000 bad apps from the Google Play Store in 2017.

The company writes in a post on its official developers’ blog that it took down more than 700,000 apps that violated Google Play policies in 2017. That’s 70 percent more than 2016. It’s a staggering figure, particularly when you consider the fact that in 2012 the total number of all apps on the Google Play Store was just over 700,000.

Not only did Google remove the bad apps, it was also able to identify and take action against them earlier. The company says that 99 percent of the apps with abusive contents were identified and rejected before they could be installed by anyone.

Google has developed new detection models and techniques which can identify repeat offenders and abusive developer networks at scale. This resulted in 100,000 bad developers being taken down last year. One of the most common violations on the Play Store is the impersonation of famous apps by malicious actors. Google is active against such apps as well and it took down more than a quarter of a million impersonating apps last year.
