Vuzix reveals Blade AR smart sunglasses with Alexa capabilities

vuzix-blade-arVuzix has come up with some pretty interesting smart glasses in the past, but this does not mean that they should rest on their laurels. In fact, Vuzix has figured out that the next big step in the world of smart glasses would be the incorporation of Amazon Alexa capabilities. Taking advantage of Vuzix’s intellectual property patent portfolio and leadership position when it concerns the area of optics, head mounted displays and smart glasses, making this the world’s smallest and sleekest pair of AR smart glasses to roll off their production lines. Tipping the scales at less than 3 ounces, the Vuzix Blade AR is tipped to ship commercially some time early this year.

Alexa is Amazon’s cloud-based voice service, and with the Vuzix Blade AR being Alexa-enabled, you can simply “talk” to Amazon Alexa on your smart sunglasses and have it do what you want. A simple voice command is able to let you play the music of your choice, hear and display the news or weather, control smart home devices, among others. As Alexa is cloud-based, it continues to gain intelligence as it is used more often, while new capabilities are constantly delivered to your device automatically. With Alexa on the Vuzix Blade AR smart sunglasses, it is so simple to use you just need to ask, and there are no pesky buttons to toggle, either.

Alex Kelly, Director of Innovation & Strategic Partnerships, Vuzix, shared, “We have all seen how Alexa has transformed interaction in homes, but in today’s world, we are constantly on the go. Having the Vuzix Blade AR Smart Sunglasses Alexa-Enabled, will allow you to not only see the digital world, but also communicate with the digital world hands free, no matter where you are.”

However, there is no word on how much the Vuzix Blade AR smart sunglasses will cost, although we do expect a slight premium over the regular pair.

Razer Phone’s Latest Update Brings HDR Support For Netflix

Earlier this month during CES 2018, Razer announced that they were working on some updates for their Razer Phone, one of which is that they will be bringing HDR support for Netflix onto the handset. The good news is that Razer Phone owners did not have to wait too long as the update is now here.

The update weighs in close to 250MB and with it, users can expect HDR support when watching Netflix. For those unfamiliar with HDR, it stands for High Dynamic Range and can be commonly found in photography, where it combines multiple photos with different exposures into a single image, resulting in a photo where the colors, contrast, shadows, and so on are vivid and have a wide range to them as opposed to looking “flat”.

This concept has been brought over onto our displays in more recent times, resulting in displays and videos also looking more vivid in terms of their output. With this update, it also makes the Razer Phone the only phone in the work to support HDR on Netflix, which when combined with its 120Hz display and Dolby 5.1 audio playback should give users an excellent video watching experience.

In addition to the HDR support, the update will also bring about some fixes/improvements to the camera (which was admittedly one of the phone’s weaker points). The update should be live so do keep an eye out for it if you haven’t been prompted to update already.

LG Rumored To Supply Sony With OLED Panels For Xperia Flagship Phone

There have been multiple rumors suggesting that Sony could be making the switch to OLED displays. As it stands Sony uses LCD for their phones, but like we said, recent rumors are claiming that Sony could be changing things up. However given that Japan Display is still focused on producing LCDs, where will Sony get their OLEDs from?

According to a report from Business Korea, it seems that Sony could be turning to LG to supply them with the necessary OLEDs for their flagship Xperia phone. We have heard how LG could be ramping up OLED production, and that one of their potential customers for the foreseeable future is Apple. If this report is true, LG can now add Sony to that list as well.

Sony is expected to host their own press conference at MWC 2018 which is taking place next month. Not much is known in terms of what the company could unveil, but we have been hearing rumors of a new Xperia flagship phone. However whether or not this particular model will be adopting OLED remains to be seen. This is because it is possible that Sony’s OLED smartphones could still be in the works and might be unveiled later on instead.

Either way take it with a grain of salt, but with more companies shifting to OLED, along with some of the advantages of OLED technology, it’s not surprising if Sony were to eventually make the jump as well.

Amazon Doesn’t Think Ads Have A Place On Alexa

In this digital day and age, advertising is one of the standard ways that companies can make money, whether it be running a website, operating a YouTube channel, managing an account on Instagram, playing games, and so on. This is why we’re actually surprised to learn that Amazon has actually turned down offers to place ads on Alexa, its digital assistant.

This comes from a report from The Information (via Android Police) in which apparently Sony approached Amazon several times about ad placement. Sony had apparently wanted to run ads on its Jeopardy Alexa game, which Amazon reportedly refused to allow them to do. The company claims that putting ads will alienate users (we agree), which ultimately frustrated Sony who felt like they weren’t able to profit from the Alexa skill that they created.

However that isn’t entirely true because one of the ways Amazon is allowing developers to make money through Alexa is through “premium skills”, which are subscription-based skills that users can opt-in on. In fact Sony’s Jeopardy game is one of the skills that is taking advantage of this subscription model, although exactly how many users are taking advantage of it remains to be seen.

We suppose eventually there will come a time where companies will start figuring out a way to monetize its services, but for now Amazon Echo/Alexa users can rest easy about ads not invading their speakers and devices.
